Steven Spielberg Directs First-Ever Music Video for Marcus Mumford’s “Cannibal”: Watch

Marcus Mumford unveiled his first solo single, “Cannibal,” last week, but what he didn’t mention at the time was that the accompanying black-and-white visuals had been directed by none other than Steven Spielberg making his music video debut. “On Sunday 3rd July in a high school gym in New York, Steven Spielberg directed his first music video, in one shot, on his phone,” Mumford wrote on social media. He added that Kate Capshaw, who starred as Willie Scott in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and has played the role of Spielberg’s wife since 1991, served as “the almighty dolly grip.” Meanwhile, Mumford’s famous girlfriend Carey Mulligan worked as “Costumer/Sound.” The video itself was filmed with Spielberg holding his phone as Capshaw rolled him backwards on a swivel chai...

Jurassic Park Movies Ranked From Best to Worst

Welcome to Dissected, where we disassemble a band’s catalog, a director’s filmography, or some other critical pop-culture collection in the abstract. It’s exact science by way of a few beers. This time, we sort through the best and worst of the franchise born from a simple question: What if dinosaurs lived again?  For over three decades now, the Jurassic franchise has dwelled happily at the intersection of horror and action, but when digging into them, what stands out is how the ones which feel the least successful are the ones that feel compelled to treat this as a monster movie franchise. Yes, aesthetically a T. Rex and Godzilla have some similarities, but the reason Jurassic Park remains a masterpiece is that it’s a tightly made disaster movie, where dinosaurs are just one facet of...

Steven Spielberg Casts David Lynch in Secret Role

Steven Spielberg has cast David Lynch in his new film The Fabelmans, and according to Variety, the role is a “closely guarded secret.” This marks the first collaboration between the two filmmaking luminaries, and it couldn’t have come on a more personal project. The Fabelmans is a semi-autobiographical coming-of-age tale about a Spielberg stand-in named Sammy Fabelman. Michelle Williams plays his mother, Paul Dano has been cast as his father, and Seth Rogen will step into the role of a favorite uncle. Spielberg has co-written the script with Tony Kushner, and it’s his first screenplay credit since A.I. Artificial Intelligence in 2001. As for Lynch, there’s no telling what role he’ll play, but that won’t stop us from speculating wildly. Since The Fabe...

Box Office: ‘West Side Story’ Heads for Worrisome $10M-$11M Opening

Steven Spielberg’s critically acclaimed West Side Story posted a subdued opening day gross of $4.1 million from 2,820 theaters at the Friday (Dec. 10) box office for a disappointing domestic opening in the $10 million to $11 million range. The good news: if those projections hold, the 20th Century and Disney film will claim the No. 1 spot on the chart ahead of Disney Animation holdover Encanto. West Side Story had hoped to clear at least $13 million in its start. Musicals face a huge challenge in the pandemic era since they rely on older adults, and particularly older females. So far, moviegoers over the age of 35 are the leeriest in terms of returning to theaters. The movie earned an A CinemaScore from audiences, while the largest quadrant were ticket buyers over the age of 55 (26 percent...

Sorry, But the Story Part of West Side Story Sucks

The Pitch: On a very literal level, Steven Spielberg‘s West Side Story is a technically perfect film. Every detail on screen, from the period-accurate production design to the costumes to the choreography and sound design, is flawlessly rendered by some of today’s best artisans, and regular Spielberg collaborator Janusz Kamiński’s cinematography is unmatched, using the full frame at all times, playing with depth of field and brilliant lighting choices in ways that only enhance the cast’s brilliant performances. There is so much to admire about this new take on West Side Story, especially how it makes up for the 1961 original by casting actual Latinos in key roles, and takes a bilingual approach to the dialogue that adds to the authenticity. The problem, unfortunately, is that all of this i...

Indiana Jones 5 Casts Phoebe Waller-Bridge as Harrison Ford’s Co-Star

<span class="localtime" data-ltformat="F j, Y | g:ia" data-lttime="2021-04-09T17:29:21+00:00“>April 9, 2021 | 1:29pm ET Phoebe Waller-Bridge has been cast as the female lead in the upcoming Indiana Jones movie. According to Deadline, the Emmy-winning Fleabag actress will co-star alongside Harrison Ford in the fifth installment of the iconic adventure series. Unlike the first four movies, the most recent being 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Steven Spielberg will switch from director to producer, while James Mangold (Ford v Ferrari, Logan) will step into the directors seat. Don’t worry, though: legendary composer John Williams, who’s scored every film in the franchise, will return to craft its soundtrack. Th...

Steven Spielberg Bringing Stephen King’s The Talisman to Netflix

Steven Spielberg is teaming with Stranger Things creators the Duffer Brothers to bring Stephen King and Peter Straub’s fantasy epic, The Talisman, to Netflix as a series. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the deals are still being finalized and in negotiations. For nearly 40 years, Spielberg has owned the rights to an adaptation of the nearly 1,000-page novel and long expressed a desire to bring it to the screen. “I feel that in the very near future, that’s going to be our richest collaboration,” he told Entertainment Weekly in 2018. “Universal bought the book for me, so it wasn’t optioned. It was an outright sale of the book. I’ve owned the book since ’82, and I’m hoping to get this movie made in the next couple of years. I’m not committing to the project as a director, I’m j...

Steven Spielberg Secures Restraining Order Against Stalker

Steven Spielberg knows a thing or two about close encounters — he’s currently living one. As TMZ reports, the blockbuster filmmaker has secured court-ordered protection from a woman he believes is threatening to murder him. According to legal documents obtained by TMZ, Spielberg filed a restraining order against a woman named Sarah Char. He claimed Char has been harassing him for months and was told by law enforcement she even purchased a gun to kill him. What’s more, Spielberg stated that Char dropped into his Twitter DMs, writing: “If I have to personally MURDER people for stealing my IPs‚ I WILL. Get me?” No word on what IPs Char is referring to, though let’s hope it’s not one of the dozens of pop culture Easter eggs found within 2018’s Ready Player One. All joking aside, the restrainin...
