Steve Carell and Domhnall Gleeson Square Off In FX’s Riveting Psychothriller The Patient: Review

The Pitch: Psychotherapist Alan Strauss (Steve Carell) is a man in the grips of mourning — not just for the recent loss of his wife (Laura Niemi) to cancer, but also for his strained relationship with his son Ezra (Andrew Leeds), whose choice to become an Orthodox Jew has drawn a deep rift against his more liberal Jewish father. But Alan receives the challenge of a lifetime in the form of Sam Fortner (Domhnall Gleeson), a new patient who seems cagey, mysterious, and unable to truly open up. Turns out, that’s because Sam is a serial killer, one desperately searching for a way to stamp out his compulsions, and he hopes that Alan’s expertise can help. In classic serial-killer fashion, that means kidnapping Alan, chaining him to the basement of his mother’s remote house out in the woods, ...

Bill Murray Won’t Be in Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City After All

Earlier this week, Focus Features revealed highly-anticipated details about Asteroid City, the latest from Wes Anderson — and Bill Murray, a top Anderson regular, was noticeably absent from the cast list. Per Variety, the actor contracted COVID-19 shortly before production was scheduled to begin, leading his role to being recast. Reportedly, Steve Carell replaced Murray in the film. Anderson wrote Asteroid City —  which is billed as a “poetic meditation on the meaning of life” — with his frequent collaborator Roman Coppola. Its galactic story takes place in a fictional American desert town in the 1950s, with the town’s Junior Stargazer convention serving as a backdrop “for scholarly competition, rest and recreation, comedy, drama, romance, and more.” It would’ve been Murray ...

Steve Carell Faces Off with a Serial Killer in Therapy in Trailer for The Patient: Watch

FX has unveiled the trailer for its upcoming series The Patient starring Steve Carell and Domhnall Gleeson. The Office funnyman goes serious in the clip as Alan Strauss, a therapist tasked with analyzing the needs and psyche of a new patient named Sam, played by Domhnall Gleeson. “I’m not content,” the latter despairs in their initial session. “I…get angry. That’s the sort of thing you help people with, right?” Correct, therapy is generally for helping people work through their issues. Except things take a turn when Gleeson’s character reveals he doesn’t just have an anger problem: he’s a serial killer. One who decides to kidnap Alan and hold him hostage to get the help he needs, to be exact. Advertisement Related Video “Successful therapy requires a safe environment,” Carell intones while...

Steve Carell Recalls the Time He Waited on His Doppelgänger Alice Cooper: Watch

During his appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday night (June 28th), actor Steve Carell recalled the time he waited on his look-alike, rocker Alice Cooper. In the same conversation, Carell also offered up a hilarious impression of Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler. While Carell was on the Tonight Show to promote his new movie Minions: The Rise of Gru, Fallon busted out side-by-side images of The Office star and the veteran shock rocker, clearly displaying the uncanny resemblance. The late-night host wondered if Carell ever met the rock legend, and it turns out he did. “I met Alice Cooper,” responded Carell. “I waited on him when I was working in Chicago, when I was waiting tables. I was working at a restaurant, and he came in. And he was Alice Cooper. And he could...

Netflix Cancels Space Force After Two Seasons

Netflix has canceled Steve Carell’s comedy series Space Force after two seasons, as first reported by Deadline. The decision comes just two months after Season 2 debuted on February 18th. Reuniting Carell with The Office creator Greg Daniels, Space Force also starred John Malkovich and Ben Schwartz. Space Force was a workplace comedy centering around a group of people tasked with establishing the sixth branch of the United States Armed Forces, which was formed under President Trump and continued under the new administration. After an uneven first season, Space Force was retooled by Daniels and Carell to be more like The Office with promising results. In our review of Season 2, Senior Entertainment Editor Liz Shannon Miller described how the changes improved the sho...

Space Force Season 2 Review: A Big Improvement That Leaves You Wanting More

The Pitch: The original pitch was simple: In 2019, the 45th President of the United States announced a plan for a Space Force branch of the U.S. military. To Steve Carell and Greg Daniels (who previously worked together on The Office), that sounded pretty ridiculous, so they successfully pitched Netflix on a satirical version of what such a “space force” would look like, with Carell as the general in charge. Unfortunately, Season 1 of Netflix’s Space Force… didn’t quite work. Despite the assembly of a surprise-packed ensemble, including awkward comedy G.O.A.T. Carell, human live wire Ben Schwartz, secret MVP Tawny Newsome, and wild card John Malkovich, there was something just off in how the writing and acting and directing jelled together — and to the credit of Carell and Daniels, they no...

Space Force Retooled to Be More Like The Office in Season 2: Watch the Trailer

“‘Well, that wasn’t very much fun to make,’” Steve Carell said to Greg Daniels at the conclusion of Space Force Season 1. Daniels was the creator of The Office, and as he told Collider in a new interview, he and his star set out to create a more improvisational atmosphere for Season 2 in the hopes of capturing the magic of their most famous collaboration. You can catch some of that silliness in the newly-released trailer below. Space Force is a workplace comedy about those tasked with creating the sixth branch of the armed forces, which formed under President Trump and now continues under the new administration. “Steve and I were very much in the mind of not making it like The Office in the beginning, we were trying to make it very cinematic,” Daniels sa...

Steve Carell and John Krasinski Reuniting for New Movie IF

John Krasinski’s next film IF (not to be confused with Stephen King’s novel and subsequent movie adaptations) is shaping to be a mini reunion of The Office. As Deadline reports, Steve Carell has joined the cast of the movie, which will also star Ryan Reynolds. The plot is being kept under wraps, but it’s based on an original idea from Krasinski about a child’s journey to rediscover their imagination. Krasinski will direct, write, and produce the currently untitled film under his company Sunday Night with Reynolds co-producing. Rounding out the cast are Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag), Alan Kim (Minari), Cailey Fleming (Loki), Louis Gossett Jr. (Watchmen), and Fiona Shaw. The movie is set for release via Paramount Pictures on November 17th, 2023. Advertisement Krasinski and Carrell haven’t w...

Kevin Malone Tells the Oral History of The Office in New Podcast Series

Netflix’s Space Force Is A Waste of Space, Talent, Resources, Time: Review

The Pitch: In the Summer of 2018, the U.S. government announced a sixth branch of the armed forces, to be called the “Space Force.” A nation scratched their heads, but President Donald J. Trump tweeted out “Space Force all the way!” to the delight of his neo-conservative base and those who still think the current administration taps into a rich vein of comedy. It played to the tune of 128,000 likes. In January 2019, Netflix announced a new series based on the venture, to be developed by The Office’s Greg Daniels and Steve Carrell, with the latter starring. And now, for May 2020, Netflix’s Space Force arrives with a veritable Right Stuff-grade line-up of sitcom stars – Carrell, Lisa Kudrow, Jimmy O. Yang, Ben Schwartz, Jane Lynch, Patrick Warburton, the late Fred Willard, and on and on – wi...

Jon Stewart’s Movie Irresistible Getting Digital Release This Summer

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced a complete reshuffling of movie releases, what with theaters across the country shuttered. If there’s a bright side in all this, it’s that certain films are getting delivered directly to consumers much earlier than planned via paid video on-demand. The latest feature to receive the streaming push is Irresistible, the political comedy written and directed by the great Jon Stewart. Originally scheduled to debut in theaters on May 29th, Focus Features has announced that the film will now see PVOD release on June 26th. Priced at the standard $19.99 for a 48-hour rental period, Irresistible will be available on most major on-demand platforms, including Amazon, Apple, Comcast, DirecTV, Fandango, Google/YouTube, Charter/Spectrum, Verizon, Microsoft, Dish, Vud...

“Space Is Hard” in the First Official Trailer for Steve Carell’s Space Force: Watch

Space Force, the new Netflix sitcom co-created by Steve Carell and Greg Daniels (The Office), has released its first official trailer. And while “Space is hard,” as Carrell’s General Naird says in the clip, the jokes come easily for this veteran comedic cast. As you may have guessed, the series mocks President Trump’s idea for sixth military branch. But the new satire has some targets on the political left, too, and in the trailer a young congresswoman of color with big hoop earrings has the bizarre idea to make “space is hard” the official Space Force motto. The trailer tracks General Naird as he goes from mocking the new branch to becoming its reluctant leader. He’s assisted by the scientist Dr. Adrian Mallory (John Malkovich, in a toned-down riff on Dr. Strangelove) and S...
