St. Vincent’s seventh album is her first ever to feel like an exhale, as the patently ambitious songwriter shrewdly forgoes much of the brazen — and regularly challenging — synth-rock spectacles of muses David Bowie and David Byrne. Instead, she’s settled in with the grit and shabby-chic glamor of early ‘70s Manhattan: heels on the subway, bodega roses, threats of love, violence and disillusion around every corner. Scenes from the city fuel the album’s lived-in and retro-tinged aesthetic, as do the sounds that dominated the periods’ airwaves, wedged between The Beatles and Sex Pistols: soul, soft-rock and psychedelia (plus a shitload of moody organs). The arrangements are familiarly nuanced and playful, as the artist born Annie Clark prefers to remain one step ahead, but Daddy’s Home manag...
With “Down,” the latest video from St. Vincent’s upcoming Daddy’s Home album, which has been described as “the grit of 1970s vinyl meets the grain of 1970s celluloid.” Co-directed by St. Vincent (aka Annie Clark) and Bill Benz, the “Down” clip sees St. Vincent careening through a narrative in a seedy hotel, with scenes of reel-to-reel tape machines and ominous shadowy figures in the hallway adding to the mystery. “Down” follows “Pay Your Way In Pain” and “The Melting Of The Sun” — both performed on St. Vincent’s recent return to Saturday Night Live — as the final song to be released ahead of Daddy’s Home’s arrival. Check out the dramatic clip for “Down” below. [embedded content] Daddy’s Home will be out May 14 (this Friday) via Loma Vista Recordings, which she anno...
Just over a month after St. Vincent revealed the latest chapter in her career, she debuted songs off her upcoming album Daddy’s Home on her triumphant return to Saturday Night Live. Annie Clark treated fans to live renditions of the two ’70s-inspired songs she’s released off the album — “Pay Your Way in Pain” and “The Melting of the Sun” — and introduced a new persona in the process. The blonde singer-songwriter was backed by a four-piece band and three pretty great backup singers as she performed the pair of songs. Watch both performances below. Ahead of her appearance on Saturday Night Live this weekend, St. Vincent released a second track from her upcoming album, Daddy’s Home. “The Melting of the Sun” — which happens to be the fifth song on the album — continues the retro grimy NYC vibe put forth by “Pay Your Way in Pain” just under a month ago, and it certainly seems like Annie Clark will be going with a full vintages sound for the new release. The lyrics also take a deep dive into Clark’s inspirations both in and out of the music world, ranging from Pink Floyd to Joni Mitchell to Marilyn Monroe. Check out the new track below. Daddy’s Home, the album all St. Vincent fans have been anticipating, is only two months shy of its May 14 release date. Teasing the awaited LP, the singer released a short trailer reminiscent of a ’70s cop movie shot in NYC. It features snapshots of the singer pondering in a diner and alone in an empty apartment, rocking a blonde wig and outfits last seen nearly 50 years ago. Near the end of the clip the announcer states, “Nobody expected it, nobody believed it, and nobody can stop it.” which perfectly encapsulates the type of album fans hope for from this powerhouse of an artist. <!– // Brid Player Singles. var _bp = _bp||[]; _bp.push({ “div”: “Brid_10143537”, “obj”: {“id”:”25115″,”width”:”480...

Last week, St. Vincent announced that she is going to released her new album, Daddy’s Home in May. In a new interview, Annie Clark recently revealed that the initial sonic goal for her most recent record was to create a super-heavy album. “Just heavy the whole time — like, ‘Hey kids, you like Tool? Well, you’ll love the St. Vincent record,’ you know?” That said, Clark found she had “nothing to say there” after working in that direction for a bit, and the ultimate result was Daddy’s Home, self-described as “music made in New York from 1971-76.” The LP drops May 14. <!– // Brid Player Singles. var _bp = _bp||[]; _bp.push({ “div”: “Brid_10143537”, “obj”: {“id”:”25115″,”width”:”480″...
If you’ve been eagerly waiting for a new St. Vincent album since 2017’s award-winning Masseduction (and the reimagined versions of the album that followed it), you won’t have to wait much longer. Daddy’s Home, the sixth album from art rocker Annie Clark, will be out on May 14 on Loma Vista Recordings. But as Clark teased on social media earlier this week, fans won’t have to wait any longer to hear a sample of the new album. “Pay Your Way in Pain” is available immediately, and channels all of the unquestionably funky unique stylings that have made St. Vincent one of the biggest and best rock stars of the past decade. It also captures a vibe that’s distinctly the era of a New York City that’s long gone (1971-1975) when grit and grime ruled the day. Check out the new track belo...
