The wacky world of the little yellow Minions from the Despicable Me film franchise will be enhanced by the suitably eclectic soundtrack to the movie Minions: The Rise of Gru, which hits theaters July 1. The film is set in the 1970s and tells the origin story of super-villain Gru, so it’s only natural that the Jack Antonoff-produced soundtrack, also due July 1 from Decca, comprises mostly covers of memorable songs from that era by such artists Phoebe Bridgers (The Carpenters’ “Goodbye to Love”), Thundercat (Steve Miller Band’s “Fly Like an Eagle”), H.E.R (Sly and the Family Stone’s “Dance to the Music”) and St. Vincent (Lipps Inc.’s “Funkytown”). One of the only newly written tunes is an eye-popping, danceable collaboration that will serve as the lead single: Diana Ross’ “Turn Up the Sunshi...
St. Vincent won Best Alternative Music Album for Daddy’s Home during the Grammy Premiere Ceremony earlier today (April 3) at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Conference Marquee Ballroom. Daddy’s Home was co-produced by St. Vincent’s Annie Clark and Jack Antonoff and debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Independent Albums chart. Later in the pre-show, Antonoff won the Grammy for producer of the year (non-classical). St. Vincent previously won Best Alternative Music Album for its 2015 self-titled project and Best Rock Song for “Masseduction” at the 2019 Grammys. The group begins a summer tour June 22 at the U.K.’s Glastonbury Festival and will open a host of upcoming dates for Red Hot Chili Peppers and Roxy Music. The Grammys air live on CBS beginning at 8pm ET and will be hosted by Trevor Noah. Jon Bati...
Despite the fact that Spring Training isn’t happening this year, the Innings Festival still returned to the February baseball hotspots of Tempe, Arizona and Tampa, Florida. Green Day and the Lumineers are headlining the East Coast rendition in March while Foo Fighters and Tame Impala hit the desert this past weekend. The Arizona location featured a wide variety of baseball legends hanging out and quite a few activities. But it wasn’t all home runs. SPIN was on the ground at Tempe Beach Park for all of the rocking out and baseball fun. Here’s The Best, The Mess & The Rest of everything from this weekend. St. Vincent on Saturday evening. (Photo by Craig Cummins) The Best St. Vincent — Dave Grohl might’ve been the biggest rock star there by name, but St. Vincent was clearly the most inter...
At-home exercise company Peloton has announced that David Bowie‘s entire catalog will be added to its platform, alongside three new remixes from Honey Dijon, TOKiMONSTA, and St. Vincent. Starting January 19th, Peloton users will be able to break a sweat to Bowie’s classic genre-bending songs. The tracks receiving remix treatment from Honey Dijon, TOKiMONSTA, and St. Vincent are “Let’s Dance,” “Golden Years,” and “It’s No Game (No. 1),” respectively. With the David Bowie licensing partnership, Peloton created a series of custom workout classes that are soundtracked with Bowie’s greatest hits. The company plans to continue forging more partnerships with musicians in the future. “To me, I connect with Bowie as an ama...
“Can we talk Curb for a second?” The catalyst for our call with St. Vincent (aka Annie Clark) is a 2021 recap, surveying her mountain of accomplishments over the past year: releasing her sixth LP, Daddy’s Home; staging a U.S. tour and several festival spots, covering Metallica and remixing Paul McCartney, earning a Grammy nomination. But the art-pop maverick is most excited to discuss the social misadventures of Larry David. “Here’s the thing,” she tells SPIN, her voice lighting up with excitement. “I know the premise is that, ‘Oh, Larry’s such an asshole,’ but I feel like I agree with him most of the time.” As should any rational human being. And it makes sense, at least creatively, that Clark appreciates Curb Your Enthusiasm: The HBO comedy originally emerged from a sort of met...
St. Vincent shared a new version of “Pay Your Way In Pain” which was remixed by none other than and the post-punkers IDLES. The song was originally off of the Grammy-nominated musician’s Daddy’s Home album. The sinister, techno-twist of “Pay Your Way In Pain” heavily emphasizes the war-like energy and gritty mechanics of IDLES, while maintaining St. Vincent’s and the original track’s electro groove. The new and old are honestly two completely different tracks, for two completely different moods, yet of the same mother—St. Vincent. “What I really enjoy about the Daddy’s Home album is using this camp energy in a really violent way,” Mark Bowen of IDLES said in a statement. “This embracing of the nostalgic even the kitsch but using it to make progressive futuristic music. It reminde...
When the nominees for the Grammys were announced last month, Taylor Swift, Jack Antonoff and St. Vincent received nods for Olivia Rodrigo’s Sour. The trio were credited as songwriters on the album. On Sunday, the Recording Academy announced on its website that the trio’s nominations were removed from the Album of the Year category. On the Grammy’s site, the Recording Academy said the following when it comes to changing nominations: Each year, the Recording Academy makes adjustments to the nominations list as-necessary after the list is first published. Common changes are often the result of updated credits and may include spelling corrections, title modifications, and the addition of nominees who were not included in the original submission, among other revisions. This year, for ...
In lieu of the upcoming film The Nowhere Inn where she stars with Carrie Brownstein, St. Vincent has shared a video for the film’s title track. Here, she stands behind a singer that is performing to a packed audience in an elegant theatre, while she is actually the one singing for the poser performer, as they both bear matching green gowns. St. Vincent and the performer are mimicking each other’s graceful hand gestures, and when the curtain closes, she chases her doppelganger through several red curtains. Singing “Been waiting now for years to see you / In my everlasting mirror,” she approaches and tries to turn around the fake-St. Vincent, to find out she has no face at all and pulls out a ring from her hair. After reading her name imprinted into the ring, naturally, she eats it. The vide...
