Spotify to Acquire AI Voice Startup Sonantic

Spotify said on Monday (June 13) it will acquire Sonantic, a tech company that specializes in creating hyperrealistic artificial voices. In a blog post announcing the acquisition, Spotify said Sonantic’s technology could allow the audio company to better communicate with users when they aren’t looking at their screens and help reduce other barriers to entry for new listeners. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Spotify Lays Out Roadmap to Higher Margins: Here’s the Plan

Spotify CEO Daniel Ek and a parade of top executives had a simple message for investors in a live-streamed presentation from New York on Wednesday (June 8): Our margins will be better. Although the company has communicated its long-term vision through quarterly earnings calls, press releases and occasional Wall Street conferences, it hasn’t gathered the investment community for a meaningful conversation since going public in 2018. “I’m not sure that journey’s very well understood,” said Ek. “And, frankly, we probably haven’t done a very good job explaining it.” Despite posting 24% revenue growth in both 2021 and the first quarter of 2022, the company’s share price is down 51.7% in 2022. As CEO, Ek’s job on Wednesday was to captain the nearly four-hour presentation communicating to investor...

Spotify Brings Back Political Ads Now That There’s No More Misinformation

Spotify suspended political ad sales in 2020 because the platform found it too hard to “validate and review” the deluge of misinformation they were facing. Well, the good news is that misinformation has been totally solved, because why else would Spotify now quietly reintroduce political ads in the run-up to the 2022 midterms? Money? Oh, right, money. As Protocol reports, the Big Green Circle is now asking US candidates, political parties, and even PACs to open their wallets. “Following our pause of political ads in early 2020, we have spent the past two years strengthening and enhancing our processes, systems and tools to responsibly validate and review this content,” a spokesperson said in a statement. “We are now beginning to sell select political advertisements in opted-in th...

How to Reduce Risk When All Your Information is Out There

Anyone who uses banking and financial services, social media, mobile apps, or has retail accounts has shared their personal information far and wide across digital systems. Preventing identity theft and protecting yourself against scams has become more difficult in this new environment. “Social media and messaging platforms, web browsers, and mobile apps already have access to vast amounts of data about each user. You can choose not to use social media or digital tools to avoid this, but it is not very practical to do so and would exclude you from some of the modern digital conveniences,” Anna Collard, SVP of content strategy and evangelist at KnowBe4 Africa, says it is virtually impossible to avoid having personal data circulating in the digital realm. “Even if you did so, you...

The Ledger: Three Major Trends Revealed in Music Companies’ Q1 2022 Earnings

The Ledger is a weekly newsletter about the economics of the music business sent to Billboard Pro subscribers. An abbreviated version of the newsletter is published online. From streaming services to concert promoters and ticket sellers, music companies have reported encouraging first-quarter earnings results that show consumers continue to adopt subscription services and eagerly return to live events after COVID restrictions were lifted in late 2021. The same companies’ stock prices tell another story, however. While music companies posted double-digit gains in subscription growth, revenue, ticket sales and many other metrics, their share prices are down by double-digits in 2022. That’s not a surprise given the state of the economy: Inflation is at a 40-year high ; rising interest rates s...

Spotify Previews NFT Galleries on Artist Profiles

The world’s biggest streaming service is hopping on the NFT bandwagon. Spotify is testing a feature to include NFTs on select artist profiles. Don’t open the Spotify app to try it out just yet though. Only a sample of Android users in the U.S. are a part of the feature test. “Spotify is running a test in which it will help a small group of artists promote their existing third-party NFT offerings via their artist profiles,” says the company as reported by TechCrunch. “We routinely conduct a number of tests in an effort to improve artist and fan experiences.” Requests from industry partners and deepening connections between artists and fans are also cited as reasons for the feature. NFT galleries on artist pages are a simple grid of static images. Videos, GIFs, and sounds are not featured in...

Spotify reportedly tests NFT galleries on musician profiles

Major music streaming platform Spotify is reportedly testing the option of nonfungible tokens (NFTs) galleries on musicians’ profiles. Should the tests appear successful, the embedment of NFTs would serve to improve artist and fan experiences.  Reports surfaced on Friday that Spotify is running a test for select users of the platform’s Android app in the United States. These users can see the NFT previews on the artists’ profiles. Currently, there are only two such artists, DJ and producer Steve Aoki and indie rock band The Wombats — both are known for their adoption of NFTs. There is no possibility for a direct buy, but after reading about the NFT and getting the enlarged preview, the user can tap to be redirected to the OpenSea page where he could purchase the item....
