Avril Lavigne Covers Adele’s “Hello” for Spotify Singles: Stream

Avril Lavigne released a new cover of Adele’s “Hello” on Friday, June 24th. The track comes courtesy of the singer’s new Spotify Singles session. On her version, Lavigne stays true to the spirit of Adele’s bombastic 2015 original, singing with regret and longing over a melancholy piano line. “Hello from the other side,” she wails with extra pain in her voice. “I must’ve called a thousand times/ To tell you I’m sorry for everything that I’ve done.” Meanwhile, she also recorded a new, acoustic rendition of “Love Sux,” the title track off her most recent studio set, which was released back in February and also includes the hit singles “Bite Me” and “Love It When You Hate Me” featuring Blackbear. The first is an intimate and soulful stripped-down version of his Bowie-referencing single, “mars.” “I decided to strip ‘mars’ back, just me and the piano. It’s something that this song deserves, to exist in its purest form so the emotion can just radiate. I have owed my fan base a version like this for a long time,” he said in a statement The second single is a playful rendition of Madonna’s iconic “Like a Virgin” to be “completely out of the box.” He tells, “Madonna is a massive idol of mine, I admire every move she artistically made. CHIKA takes it into a new realm, however, taking ownership of the luscious, jazzy ode to self worth with a whole new verse of her own. “Ain’t no stopping shooting stars/ They got their own mind, and that’s the gold mine,” she raps. “The whole grind is nuts, so hold mine/ I promise you I’m set for go ti...

Alanis Morissette Reimagines “You Oughta Know”, “Reasons I Drink” for Spotify Singles: Stream

Anyone else’s year been so crazy they forgot Alanis Morissette dropped a really excellent new album, Such Pretty Forks in the Road? Well, as a much needed reminder that there has been some good in 2020, the Canadian-American icon has celebrated the LP with a new contribution to the Spotify Singles series. Although the standard practice for the series is for artists to reinterpret one song from their catalog and cover someone else’s, Morissette decided to tackle two of her own tracks. First is “Reasons I Drink”, the lead single from Such Pretty Forks, which is given a very faithful yet stripped back reworking. It’s somewhat bolder and grittier here, even as it’s driven by an acoustic guitar. Morissette’s new imagining of the classic “You Oughta Know”, as might be expected, is the real highl...

Queer artists Orville Peck and Rina Sawayama have contributed two new cover songs to a Pride-themed installment of the Spotify Singles series. All three members of the group were openly gay and their music was known for taking a stance on LGBTQ+ issues. As for Sawayama, our former Artist of the Month, she reworked Lady Gaga’s “Dance in the Dark”. The original 2010 Fame Monster single talked about body image issues and the importance of being comfortable with one’s own sexuality. Editors’ Picks Musicians usually record th...
