Spoon ventures into uncharted musical territory with legendary dub producer Adrian Sherwood on Lucifer on the Moon, a dub-heavy new version of the long-running indie rock band’s latest album, Lucifer on the Sofa. The rework will be released on Nov. 4 on Matador Records. Sherwood’s “reconstruction” of the album track “On the Radio” can be heard now and is accompanied by a video directed by frontman Britt Daniel. [embedded content][embedded content] Daniel initially asked Sherwood to remix a couple of singles from Lucifer on the Sofa, with the only directives being to “avoid things that would not be possible on tape” and “add whatever you want to add — the less modern, the better.” When all parties were happy with the first remixes, Sherwood was encouraged to keep working. “It wasn’t just a ...
In a double bill straight out of the mid-2000s, Interpol and Spoon will team for the “Lights, Camera, Factions” tour, which kicks off Aug. 25 in Asbury Park, N.J. The two indie rock titans, who are both now signed to Matador Records, will be joined on the road by label-mates The Goon Sax. Interpol has wrapped work on its seventh studio album and promises “new music is coming soon.” The as-yet-untitled project was produced by Flood and Alan Moulder and is the follow-up to 2018’s Marauders. Interpol has not played live since November 2019. Spoon will be touring in support of its latest album, Lucifer on the Sofa, a top-five hit on Billboard’s Top Alternative, Rock and Independent Albums charts. The single “Wild” reached No. 6 on the AAA radio tally. Earlier this month, we spoke with Britt Da...
Welcome to the latest edition of The Offramp! Each month, rock writer Corbin Reiff will highlight some of the most dynamic artists and projects going on in music today. Throw on the turn signal, crank up the stereo and enjoy the ride! There’s an old quote about Alexander the Great that’s floated around for centuries. It’s been attributed to many – Plutarch, John Calvin — but you may have heard it from Hans Gruber, the villain from the first Die Hard film. “When Alexander saw the breadth of his domain, he wept for there were no more worlds to conquer.” At a certain point, when you’ve been doing something for a long enough time, you simply run out of goals worth achieving. You’ve received all the critical plaudits. You’ve attended the award shows. You’ve performed in front of tens of thousan...

Spoon announced their tenth record Lucifer on the Sofa is out February 11, 2022, and dropped its first single “The Hardest Cut” today. In what is the band’s purest form of rock ‘n’ roll, Lucifer on the Sofa was put together in the band’s hometown of Austin, Texas. As the capitol is known as early music stomping grounds for legends like Stevie Ray Vaughn, frontman Britt Daniel attributes other cowboy rockers as inspiration for the upcoming record. “I spent a lot of 2018 and 2019 listening to ZZ Top,” Daniel said. [embedded content][embedded content] Daniel and band member Alex Fischel co-wrote “The Hardest Cut.” Its rhythm guitar opens the track, bouncing like a rubber band ball. With a steady, spur-banging beat, Spoon revel in Link Wray strokes and swing new riffs ...

Spoon recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of Girls Can Tell and seem like they’re up to something with regards to new music. But for now, a pair of Tom Petty covers will do. The Texas-based rockers shared versions of “Breakdown” and “A Face in the Crowd,” two songs from distinctly different eras of Petty. They recorded the songs live at the Catacomb in Austin. But as you can imagine, they’re quite good! <!– // Brid Player Singles. var _bp = _bp||[]; _bp.push({ “div”: “Brid_10143537”, “obj”: {“id”:”25115″,”width”:”480″,”height”:”270″,”playlist”:”10315″,”inviewBottomOffset”:”105px”} }); –> Keeping with th...
