BRISBANE, Australia — After two editions were wiped out by the pandemic, the first day Splendour in the Grass 2022 was sunk by Mother Nature. Inclement weather turned the site into a quagmire on the eve of this year’s show, held July 22-24 in Byron Bay, the picturesque beach town at the most easterly point of Australia. By midday on Friday (July 22), the grounds were deemed to be unmanageable. “In the interest of patrol safety and in consultation with all relevant emergency services,” reads a statement from Splendour organizers, “we have decided to err on the side of caution and cancel all performances on the main stages today only.” The reason: a “significant weather system” currently sitting off the country’s east coast which “may reach land later today, bringing more rainfall.” Statemen...
The popular outdoor event was initially announced for July 2020, then, due to the health crisis, those dates were shifted to October 2020, then July 2021, to November 2021 and now July 2022. With lockdowns in place in the country’s two biggest cities, Sydney and Melbourne, and the states of New South Wales — home to Sydney and Byron Bay — breaking an unwanted record of 886 infections Saturday (Aug. 21), hosting a festival in the months ahead is a tall order. “With vaccine rollout progressing more slowly than anticipated, we have made the decision to move the 20th Anniversary edition of the festival to July 2022,” says Splendour in the Grass co-founders Jessica Ducrou and Paul Piticco. “We are confident that moving the festival to July 2022 will finally see us enjoying Splendour...
The pandemic crushed the best-laid plans for Splendour in the Grass last year, and, with more than half Australia’s population currently under lockdown, a late July 2021 show was a non-starter. So organizers hatched a bold plan. Splendour XR’s architecture was drawn up at the dawn of the health crisis. Since then, Splendour co-founder Jessica Ducrou and her teammates have regularly worked 12-plus hours each day, building an immersive, pandemic-proof space. “It has been a huge project,” she tells Billboard. “In many ways, it’s been more challenging than a real-life festival. I haven’t worked as hard ever on a project.” The hard work shows. On July 24 and 25, more than 50 international and local acts perform across stages in seven precincts, including headliners Khalid and ...
Australia’s popular mid-winter festival Splendour in the Grass will go digital next month, with a two-day virtual event featuring performances from Khalid, CHVRCHES, The Killers, Charlie XCX and many more. Also confirmed to the Splendour XR lineup are Denzel Curry, Phoebe Bridgers, Vance Joy, Little Simz, The Avalanches, Duke Dumont, Of Monsters and Men, Masked Wolf, Tash Sultana and Russ Millions, while Grimes will unleash her new project, Meteverse (Super Beta). “We could not be more excited about Splendour XR and the opportunity to take the Splendour goodness online to our existing community and also to new audiences around the globe,” comments SITG co-producers Jessica Ducrou and Paul Piticco. The 20th anniversary edition of Australia’s Splendour In the Grass is more than a year away, though festival-fans just got a taste of what’s to come. On Monday, organizers confirmed Tyler, The Creator and The Strokes have signed up for the rescheduled Splendour dates, now set for July 23-25, 2021. Also, virtual British band Gorillaz will slot into the top of the bill. The Damon Albarn-led project replaces Flume, who was originally booked for Splendour’s 2020 edition, but isn’t available for the new dates in 2021. It’s something of a “Feel Good Inc” development from Splendour’s producers Jessica Ducrou and Paul Piticco, who had tentatively pushed back this year’s show by three months to October 2020 due to the pandemic. Last month, Ducrou and Piticco conceded those plans couldn’...
