Former Monero maintainer Riccardo ‘Fluffypony’ Spagni to surrender for South Africa extradition

Riccardo Spagni, the former maintainer of the privacy coin Monero also known as Fluffypony, faces extradition to South Africa months after his arrest by U.S. authorities. In a Thursday court filing for the Middle District of Tennessee, Magistrate Judge Alistair Newbern ordered Spagni to surrender to U.S. Marshals on July 5 for extradition to South Africa. He will reportedly face 378 charges related to allegations of fraud and forgery between 2009 and 2011 at a company called Cape Cookies. U.S. authorities arrested Spagni in Nashville in July 2021 at the request of the South African government, holding him in custody until September. The court filings hint at allowing Spagni to be in the United States for the Independence Day holiday weekend before being taken to Africa early on Tuesday. No...

Andre Cronje sees a ‘necessity for regulation’ ahead of crypto’s new era

Andre Cronje, former Fantom Foundation technical adviser and Yearn.finance founder, resurfaced on Monday via Medium after announcing his departure from the DeFi and crypto space last month. In a post titled “The rise and fall of crypto culture,” Cronje expressed his lamentations of crypto culture as he called for increased regulation and legislation in the industry. When Cronje and his colleague Anton Nell tweeted about the fate of all the applications and services they had built, they offered no other details as to their personal motivations. They even proceeded to deactivate their Twitter accounts on March 6. Now, readers of Cronje’s words can surmise that these two partners were going through some sort of ethical crisis. The opening and closing refrain, “Cry...

Sourced from International IDEA South Africa came out as one of 135 countries that the US claims Russian government employees targeted between 2012 and 2017 as part of two massive hack campaigns allegedly aimed at disrupting energy companies and critical infrastructure. Eskom, however, did not specify if it was targeted by Russian actors, specifically, or not. “We are aware that, daily, cybercriminals are actively targeting various sectors, incl...
