Soundgarden Drop Benefit Show Counterclaim Suit Against Vicky Cornell

The surviving members of Soundgarden have dropped part of their counterclaim against Vicky Cornell, which they filed in May regarding the 2019 I Am the Highway benefit show, after being threatened with sanctions by her legal team. In the original filing, the band accused Cornell of using the funds from the show for “personal purposes for herself and her family.” Despite dropping this part of the lawsuit, the Cornell and the surviving Soundgarden members will still be dueling over who owns unreleased audio recordings, Rolling Stone reported. In a statement given to the Hollywood Reporter, Cornell’s lawyer Martin Singer called the band’s actions “shameful conduct.” “When we threatened Soundgarden with the undisputed facts that their claims concerning Vicky Cornell and the Corn...

Sevendust Share Cover of Soundgarden’s ‘The Day I Tried to Live’

Sevendust has released their first music since 2018’s All I See Is War and it’s a cover of Soundgarden’s “The Day I Tried to Live.” The reason for its release? The Atlanta-based rockers were inspired by its message and the track they say, has the same meaning now as it did when originally released. “Soundgarden is such an important band to all of us in Sevendust and this love for them goes all the way back to when we were starting,” singer Lajon Witherspoon in a statement of the 1994 song. “We discussed trying to do one of their songs and our producer Elvis [Baskette] suggested ‘The Day I Tried To Live.’ When I first heard it, I thought the lyrics were timeless. The lyrics are about trying to experience new things and change the way you live, and we see examples of that every day...

Soundgarden’s Kim Thayil on Protests, Quarantine and Teaming Up With Brandi Carlile

Like most of us, Kim Thayil has spent the past few months more or less sheltering in place. Which, by his own definition, might not be something particularly out of character for the 59-year-old Soundgarden guitarist. “So many of the people I know who are writers and players, if they’re not the kind of person that jumps around and parties all the time, tend to live as hermits to begin with,” he says, calling SPIN from his Seattle-area home. But while Thayil, whose dense, twisted-metal riffs and noise-damaged, often frenzied solos belie his generally reserved public demeanor, would likely never be perceived as the jump-around-and-party type, he has managed to remain fairly active while also staying home and doing nothing much at all. “I think a lot of this shelter-in-place thing has really ...

Matt Cameron and Taylor Momsen Cover Soundgarden’s ‘Halfway There’

Chris Cornell died three years ago today in Detroit while Soundgarden was on tour. In his memory, Soundgarden (and Pearl Jam) drummer Matt Cameron teamed up with former Soundgarden opener Taylor Momsen (also from Gossip Girl) of the Pretty Reckless to take on the band’s “Halfway There.” The Pretty Reckless were also the opener for the band on that night in Detroit. Momsen also appeared with the three surviving members of the band at last year’s I Am the Highway show that is now the source of a countersuit between them and Chris Cornell’s widow Vicky. The song hails from the band’s 2012 comeback album King Animal. That was the band’s first album of originals since 1996’s Down on the Upside.  For this version, shot in quarantine, of course, Cameron was on guitar...
