I Write the Songs…

Listen to “Valentine,” the title cut on the latest album from Matador recording artist Snail Mail, and you feel transported back to the early years of Lollapalooza, if not earlier. The song opens with waves of ‘80s synth and staccato bursts of Police-style guitar, then segues into a crunchy power-pop chorus that Billy Corgan might have scripted. Snail Mail grew up in the D.C. suburbs as Lindsey Jordan. She is 23. Surely, she is not a Billy Corgan fan. You ask anyway. “I have a Smashing Pumpkins tattoo,” she replies. She holds it up to the Zoom camera. Spin the latest albums by Lindsey or Marissa Nadler or Shannon Lay, and you will hear the fruits of a modern singer-songwriter movement, a string of masterful recordings by young, mostly female artists who grew up listening to their parents’ ...

Snail Mail Unveils Early Demo of ‘Valentine’ Song ‘Adore You’

In further support of her newly released sophomore album, Snail Mail unveiled the early demo version of the record’s lead single, “Adore You.” [embedded content][embedded content] The track by the artist regularly known as Lindsey Jordan features early lyrics and a different structure, providing the true, vulnerable lo-fi aura the song was originally rooted in. It is off her latest, Valentine, which was released on November 5 last year. Shortly after releasing her acclaimed album Valentine, Jordan underwent throat surgery after polyps were found on her vocal cords. As a result, Jordan had to postpone her long-awaited tour. She details her challenging recovery in the new episode of ‘Sheroes Mixtape Memoir’ for Sonos Radio, which you can listen to here or on the Sonos app. [embedded con...

The 30 Best Songs of 2021

A pair of rappers pulling off the best Tom Tom Club sample since Mariah Carey’s “Fantasy” (G Perico & Rucci), an iconic New Wave band trafficking in tongue-in-cheek nostalgia (Duran Duran), a blackgaze act embracing their love of vocal harmony (Deafheaven), and psych-rockers using the shopping mall as a metaphor for capitalist greed (My Morning Jacket) — SPIN‘s 30 Best Songs of 2021 offer something for everyone. For our latest year-end track recap, we kept our overall sorting process the same as 2020: For a cut to be eligible, it needed to be one of two things: 1) a stand-alone single released in 2021 or 2) part of an album issued in 2021. 30. Beatrice Deer – “The Storm” The sound is so simple that, at first, it feels almost formless: a primal drum groove, shards of metallic elect...

The 30 Best Albums of 2021

Back in June, SPIN published The 30 Best Albums of 2021 (So Far), rounding up everything from mainstream rock to experimental hip-hop. Six months later, we’re back with our year-end recap — and it’s interesting how, even though the stylistic balance has stayed consistent, the picks themselves haven’t. While this list also covers a lot of ground, only six of those earlier records wound up in our final tally. Below, you’ll find massive R&B collaborations (Silk Sonic), trendy pop breakouts (Olivia Rodrigo), big-ticket indie-rock (The War on Drugs), prog-metal giants (Mastodon), and acclaimed indie-rap (Benny the Butcher & Harry Fraud). Looking back at Pandemic Year Number Two, when the music industry forecast seemed to shift on a daily basis, perhaps these changes are only fittin...

Snail Mail Postpones Tour Dates Due to Vocal Cord Damage

Lindsey Jordan (a.k.a. Snail Mail) is postponing her U.S. and European tour dates this year due to her upcoming vocal cord surgery. “I’ve been struggling with my vocal health more and more each year. I lose my voice after a couple of days of singing,” Jordan wrote in a statement. “I went to see an ENT last week and they found massive polyps in my vocal cords (surprisingly from vocal trauma due to talking!! shocker lol) that need to be operated on to prevent permanent damage to my voice. The recovery time is three months/speech therapy and in an effort to make sure the rest of the tour can happen, I will be postponing our first US tour which was supposed to begin this week as well as our initial UK/Euro tour.” Jordan had previously announced the tour with the unveiling of her sophomore ...

Snail Mail Unveils ‘Madonna’ Off Forthcoming Sophomore Record Valentine

Snail Mail shared another single, “Madonna,” off her upcoming album Valentine. [embedded content][embedded content] “I am excited to share this one!” Snail Mail, aka Lindsey Jordan, said. “In summation it’s about why love can’t exist between a person and a concept of a person. Remove the pedestal and you might realize there was never anything there at all.” She performed “Madonna” live at the Armour-Stiner Octagon House in Irvington, New York. The 22-year-old is getting us ready for her sophomore record out November 5 via Matador. She already shared two songs, “Ben Franklin” and the title track, and is doing a series of record signings in New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore in early November. Following the release of Valentine, Jordan will embark on a massive North American tou...

Snail Mail Announces New Album, Shares Bloody ‘Valentine’ Video

Snail Mail dropped a lovingly bloody video for the title track off her forthcoming album Valentine. Set to arrive November 5 via Matador, Snail Mail gave a first look into what we can expect from the record by recreating a hilarious period drama. Also known as Lindsey Jordan, Snail Mail is a caterer for a ballroom gala and simultaneously is trying to win over a girl that is dancing with a boy. Resulting in the overblown, Tarantino bloodshed, Snail Mail takes a knife to the guy’s heart in front of everyone, following her stealing everyone’s drinks and cake. “It was so rewarding concocting this video alongside the brilliant Josh Coll!,” Snail Mail said in a statement. “Watching a few perverse images in my head metamorphose into this gorgeous storyline and eventually into a tangible visual wa...
