Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins, Run the Jewels, Faith No More Highlight Riot Fest 2021 Lineup

The festival announcements are rolling in faster than you can say COVID lockdown. Riot Fest, which announced part of its lineup last June, has unveiled the whole thing and it’s a doozy. Nine Inch Nails (who are also headlining Louder Than Life a weekend later) are joining Smashing Pumpkins, Pixies and Run the Jewels at the top of this year’s bill. Originally, My Chemical Romance was slated to headline, but they’re conspicuously absent from the lineup. But have no fear, MCR will be headlining the 2022 edition of Riot Fest. Meanwhile, Mike Patton will perform double duty, performing with Faith No More and Mr. Bungle at the event. Also announced were DEVO, NOFX, Dinosaur Jr., The Ghost Inside, Motion City Soundtrack and many, many more. According to the event’s press release, a...

The 50 Best Alt-Rock Love Songs

Not all love songs are romantic. Not all love songs are even happy. It all depends on your definition of the term. For every “My Girl” or “Your Song,” there’s at least one track with a nuanced take on the darker, more complicated sides of love — the drama of a long-term relationship, the fear of losing a partner, the void left in love’s wake. Many of those songs fall under the admittedly broad umbrella of “alt-rock.” So to mark Valentine’s Day, we decided to gather 50 of our favorite “love songs” in the genre — both conventional and otherwise. Throughout this list, you’ll find lines about blooming romance and marital bliss. You’ll also find nods to drug addiction and car crashes. There’s something for everyone. – Ryan Reed 50. that dog. – “I’m Gonna See You” You take the good, you tak...

The 35 Best Albums of the Last 35 Years

Let’s face it: With most “Best Albums” lists, you know the broad strokes of the ranking before you even click. Part of that predictability is understandable: Most iconic records earn their reputation. But these rankings shouldn’t be fossilized, and a shit-ton of amazing LPs have been shoved aside in the pursuit of maintaining the status quo. We didn’t ignore the unimpeachable on our list — you’ll see plenty of the staples you’ve come to expect. But we also hope we’ll spark your curiosity and encourage you to hunt for a title you may have missed over the last 35 years. 35. With love songs, of course. ...

Smashing Pumpkins Debut ‘CYR’ on Late Night

Smashing Pumpkins’ double album CYR was released last Friday. Billy Corgan has been making the interview rounds, but last night on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, the band played the title track for the first time in a “live” setting. By live, we mean a socially-distanced performance where Corgan, James Iha, Jimmy Chamberlain and Jeff Schroeder join forces through the magic of some pre-recorded method. You can watch that below. [embedded content] In addition to the release of CYR, the Pumpkins have some big plans upcoming. In October, the band’s seminal Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness turned 25. In conjunction with that, Corgan and company dropped some pretty big news that they’ve got a 33-song sequel to the album and MACHINA in the works. ...

Smashing Pumpkins Unveil ‘Purple Blood’ and ‘Dulcet in E’

In likely the final preview of what’s to come on CYR, Smashing Pumpkins have shared a pair of new songs in the form of “Purple Blood” and “Dulcet in E.” The songs join “Cyr,” “The Colour of Love,” “Ramona” and “Wyttch,” “Anno Satana” and “Birch Grove” from the record. You can listen to the songs below. Last week, Billy Corgan and company shared the spooky video for “Wyttch,” which was appropriately released on Friday the 13th. In October, the Pumpkins also announced they have a 33-song odyssey planned for 2021 that serves as the follow-up to both their landmark Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and MACHINA.  CYR is out next Friday (Nov. 27) on Sumerian Records. It is the band’s first album in three years. You Dese...

Smashing Pumpkins Celebrate Friday the 13th With ‘Wyttch’ Video

To celebrate Friday the 13th, Smashing Pumpkins dropped a video for the tune “Wyttch” off their forthcoming double album CYR, which comes out Nov. 27. The song was previously released in conjunction with the track Ramona,” but the “Wyttch” video — directed by Charlotte Kemp Muhl of the New York bands UNI and The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger — gives the song some additional cool creepiness. The surreal clip also contains cameos from Corgan’s kids, Augustus and Philomena. Watch “Wyttch” below: The Pumpkins also recently released details on their forthcoming 33-track sequel to the Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness album, as well as Machina, and teased a 2021 world arena tour announcement. Smashing Pumpkins Share ‘Ramona’ and ‘Wyttch’ From Upcoming Album

Another Friday, another new batch of Smashing Pumpkins songs. Billy Corgan and company unveiled a pair of new tunes tonight with “Ramona” and “Wyttch,” keeping with their theme of sharing new songs two-at-a-time. The former is a synth-laden track while “Wyttch” harkens back to some of the Pumpkins’ darker days. Check out the songs below. [embedded content] Last week, the Pumpkins also announced they have a 33-song odyssey planned for 2021 that serves as the follow-up to both their landmark Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and MACHINA.  As for CYR, that will be out on Nov. 27 on Sumerian Records. Smashing Pumpkins Announce 33-Song Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and MACHINA Sequel

Where did the time go? Smashing Pumpkins’ Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness turns 25 this weekend and the band has big plans to celebrate the silver anniversary of the 1995 28-song double album that hit No. 1 on the Billboard charts. Billy Corgan and company will hit the road in 2021 to mark the anniversary of the album that featured hits like “Bullet With Butterfly Wings,” “1979” and “Tonight Tonight.” Those dates will be announced soon. More significantly, the band also revealed that they’ve got a 33-song sequel to the album and MACHINA in the works. That record is slated to be released late next year. As for the anniversary itself, Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlain will reminisce about the album on a Zoom call on Oct. 23 at 10 AM PST/1 PM EST which will be moder...

Smashing Pumpkins Unleash Two New Tracks, Third Episode of Animated Series

In the spirit of their upcoming double album, Smashing Pumpkins just dropped not one, but two new songs. After sharing two tracks off their upcoming release CYR in late September, the band decided to give fans a little more Friday with the release of another pair of album cuts. For this week’s New Music Friday, the group — consisting of founding members Billy Corgan, James Iha, Jimmy Chamberlin and late-era guitarist Jeff Schroeder — shared new songs “Anno Satana” and “Birch Grove,” alongside a new episode of Corgan’s “In Ashes,” titled “I’m In Love With Your God.” The Deep Sky animated series takes its “fantastical” label to new heights in its third installment, but with the death of a cartoon rat, it isn’t for the faint of heart. “The original story is ...

The 50 Best Songs of the Year 2000

The year 2000 looms large in pop culture history: the Y2k non-scare, the Seinfeld “Newmannium” episode, the “In the Year 2000″ sketch from Conan O’Brien’s original late-night show, the Hulu series PEN15. And just like, say, the grunge-defined 1991, the year immediately conjures specific sounds: gleaming teen-pop, earnest radio rock, the Neptunes and Timbaland. There’s never a bad time to revisit this music. But in the middle of a pandemic, with America on the verge of collapse, it feels extra comforting — a blast of nostalgia for a time when you could safely exit your home, visit your local mall’s Sam Goody and buy Mystikal’s “Shake Ya Ass” CD single. For this list, our only criteria was that the songs appear on albums or soundtracks released in 2000. Here we go. 50. Papa Roach, “Last Reso...

Smashing Pumpkins to Release Double Album CYR

The Smashing Pumpkins are back on our radar… just in time for the pumpkin season. The alt-rock icons announced their upcoming double-record, CYR, on Friday. Set to drop in November, the 20-track release will feature founding members Billy Corgan, James Iha, Jimmy Chamberlin and late-era guitarist Jeff Schroeder, with Corgan manning the record’s production. A few weeks ago, the rockers shared singles ‘Cyr’ and ‘The Colour Of Love,’ both of which have seen love on alternative radio, with ‘Cyr’ becoming the No. 1 most added single on alternative radio during its release week back in August. Preorder the album, which releases Nov. 27 via Sumerian Records, here, and check out the tracklist below: 1. The Colour of Love2. Confessions of a Dopamine Addict3. Cyr4. Dulcet in E5. Wrath6. Ra...

Smashing Pumpkins Return With ‘Cyr’ and ‘The Colour of Love’

A couple of weeks after teasing activity, the Smashing Pumpkins are officially back. Billy Corgan and company released a pair of new songs, “Cyr” and “The Colour of Love,” the first songs from an upcoming album they’re working on that will be out on Sumerian Records. The lineup — which is essentially the founding one sans D’Arcy Wretzky — also includes guitarist Jeff Schneider. “‘Cyr’ is dystopic folly,” Corgan said in a statement. “One soul against the world sort of stuff, set against a backdrop of shifting loyalties and sped up time. To me it stands as both hopeful and dismissive of what is and isn’t possible with faith.” The Pumpkins last released new music in 2018, with the Rick Rubin-helmed SHINY AND OH SO BRIGHT, VOL. 1 / LP: NO PAST. NO FUTURE. NO SUN. You can read our review of the...
