There’s a new Ozzy Osbourne album out this month. There’s also a new Striborg album out: two and a half hours of oppressively bleak — and, at its best, downright chilling — “blackwave” courtesy of the Tasmanian loner known as Sin Nanna. I state these facts to demonstrate a simple point: The universe of what we call metal is vast, and more or less impossible to keep tabs on in its entirety. Favor the festival headliners and arena fillers, and you miss the best of the club acts and fledgling bands sweating it out over that soon-to-be-legendary demo; scour the underground obsessively and you might overlook a late-career triumph from a household name. So if this new incarnation of SPIN’s monthly metal roundup — in which I take over from Andy O’Connor, an astute and passionate lifer whose recom...
Slipknot employs an army of masked women, a dark, creepy mansion, ghostly figures engulfed in flames, a turntable solo and an out-of-tune toy piano to ghoulish effect in the video for the song “Yen,” directed by band member M. Shawn “Clown” Crahan. It’s the second pre-release track from the masked hard rock band’s upcoming album, The End, So Far, which will arrive Sept. 30 from Roadrunner Records. [embedded content][embedded content] The track initially explores a more mid-tempo vibe compared to prior single “The Dying Song (Time to Sing),” but eventually ramps up Slipknot’s trademark intensity with such lyrics like “as the knife goes in / cut across my skin / when my death begins / I want to know that I was dying for you.” Slipknot will support The End, So Far on the third leg of its KNOT...
This article originally appeared in the May 2000 issue of SPIN. Slipknot have a motto: People = Shit. It’s a straightforward enough sentiment, but sometimes Iowa’s most famous metal nonet like to reinforce the theory with visual aids. “Shawn [Crahan, percussionist] decided to take a shit onstage in Virginia Beach last night,” drummer Joey Jordison says. “I’m the only one down with that, so he threw a turd at me. When I went to take a shower, I had this big shit smeared on my sock.” Jordison (a.k.a. #1), is loudly discussing feces as he and bandmates Crahan (a.k.a. #6), vocalist Corey Taylor (a.k.a. #8), and bassist Paul Gray (a.k.a. #2) stroll through the National Museum of Natural History in Washington. D.C., where they are scheduled to play a show tonight. Not surprisingly, the guys are ...
Slipknot has dropped the third single from their upcoming album The End, So Far, in the form of “Yen.” The track initially explores a more mid-tempo vibe compared to prior single “The Dying Song (Time to Sing),” but eventually ramps up the intensity with such lyrics like “as the knife goes in / cut across my skin / when my death begins / I want to know that I was dying for you.” [embedded content][embedded content] Due out on Sept. 30, the 12-track The End, So Far marks Slipknot’s first time working with veteran hard rock producer Joe Barresi, best known for his work on projects by Queens Of The Stone Age, Melvins and Avenged Sevenfold. It’s the follow-up to the Iowa-based masked outfit’s 2019 album We Are Not Your Kind, Slipknot’s third-consecutive No. 1 on The Billboard 200. Slipk...

Slipknot are back. The masked metal icons released “The Chapeltown Rag,” taking an aim at the manipulation and destructiveness that social media brings upon us. It’s their first new song in over two years. [embedded content][embedded content] The new track will debut live at the band’s own Knotfest tonight, November 5, during their set at the Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles. It will also be Slipknot’s first-ever livestream, airing at 6 p.m. PT, and tickets are still available. “It’s a punisher man,” vocalist Corey Taylor said in a statement. “It’s classic Slipknot. And it’s frenetic. But lyrically, it’s coming from a point of talking about the various manipulations that can happen when social media meets media itself. And the different ways that these manipulations can try to pul...

Unexpected musical mashups became a staple of the Internet sometime in the early 2010s and have provided many laughs since. It’s hard to forget about Isosine’s viral 2011 “Psychosocial Baby” mashup of Justin Bieber and Slipknot, in which he laced the iconic masked metal band’s aggressive vocals over the happy-go-lucky pop beat of Bieber’s bubblegum hit “Baby.” The video has garnered well over 17 million views in the last decade. Now, YouTuber William Maranci has taken it upon himself to harness Slipknot‘s seminal “Psychosocial” for a 2021 mashup with none other than one of Daft Punk‘s greatest hits, “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger.” Recommended Articles Sure, it’s absolutely ridiculou...
