Avicii’s Father Talks About Attempts to Help His Son in Intimate Interview

Avicii would have celebrated his 31st birthday this week, and to honor him, his father Klas Bergling took the time to share some memories of his son in an intimate interview. During the discussion on SiriusXM‘s BPM channel, Bergling touched upon the many times he and his family had attempted to convince Avicii to take a break from touring. The mental and physical stress he endured while on tour played a major factor in the late dance music superstar taking his own life back in 2018.  “Almost every day, every year,” Bergling says of the frequency of the conversation. “The music business, you know it, it absorbs you, with such a success that Tim went through. All the time he spent traveling, making music, and at that time he was really happy doing it, even i...

Bright Eyes Cover Thin Lizzy’s “Running Back”: Stream

Bright Eyes returned last week with their long-awaited comeback album, Down in the Weeds, Where the World Once Was. In support of the release, Conor Oberst and his crew recorded a SiriusXM Session that featured a pretty unexpected cover song: Thin Lizzy’s “Running Back”. They also appeared on CBS This Morning over the weekend. While the indie/emo rockers maintain the folkier aspects of Think Lizzy’s 1976 Jailbreak original, Oberst’s distinctly raspy growl make this “Running Back” rendition a unique one all their own. We’ve certainly missed Oberst in Bright Eyes mode like this. As for the Omaha-bred band’s appearance on CBS This Morning, they performed Down in the Weeds singles “Persona Non Grata” and “Mariana Trench”. Oberst was joined by fellow Bright Eyes mates Mike Mogis and Nathan...

Bruce Springsteens Calls Lana Del Rey “One of the Best Songwriters in the Country”

Bruce Springsteen (photo by Ben Kaye) and Lana Del Rey (photo by David Brendan Hall) Bruce Springsteen has had Lana Del Rey all over his playlists for years now, but his fandom has just reached new heights. In a recent broadcast on SiriusXM, The Boss called the Norman Fucking Rockwell! mastermind “one of the best songwriters in the country.” Springsteen’s comments came during the latest episode of his ongoing From His Home to Yours SiriusXM series, as Stereogum points out. During the radio show, he played Del Rey’s own 2012 song “American”, which notably name-drops Springsteen. “Springsteen is the king, don’t you think/ I was like, hell yeah that guy can sing,” the track’s lyrics read. “She’s, uh, name checking some guy from New Jersey in there. I’m not sure who,” The Boss joked ...

In addition to studio discographies, each channel will be stocked full of live performances, interviews, track-by-track commentaries, and celebrity guest DJs. In particular, The Beastie Boys Channel features playlists from Talib Kweli, Rosie Perez, Michael Rappaport, and more, while the Michael Jackson Channel will be voiced by journalist and author Steven Ivory, who can presuma...

Here’s What Streaming Services Are Doing for Black Out Tuesday and Beyond

Spotify, Bandcamp, SiriusXM and more are meeting the moment with a range of initiatives. As protests sparked by the death of 46-year-old Minneapolis resident George Floyd heated up this weekend, music companies began making statements in support of the movement to end police brutality against black Americans. On Friday, a number of companies and artists began sharing a statement posted under the hashtag #TheShowMustBePaused, which calls for “a day to disconnect from work and reconnect with our community” and “an urgent step of action to provoke accountability and change.” Started by Atlantic Records marketing executives Brianna Agyemang and Jamila Thomas, who are both black, the call for a day of action — which is now being called “Black Out Tuesday” — sparked other compa...

SiriusXM CFO Says Satellite Radio Faces Uncertain Coronavirus Impact

Even if people aren’t commuting in their cars as much while they shelter in their homes during the coronavirus pandemic, satellite radio powerhouse and Pandora owner SiriusXM has yet to take a big hit to its bottom line judging by its recently released first-quarter earnings. But while listening of Pandora and SiriusXM offerings is up for stay-at-home consumers, David Frear, senior executive vp and CFO of SiriusXM, warned Tuesday that his industry faces an uncertain future. “I haven’t talked to anybody who has a good picture of what the recovery will look like,” he told the J.P. Morgan Global Technology, Media and Communications Conference during a session that was webcast. Frear said the COVID-19 crisis has driven new- and used-car sales down sharply, relative to y...

MusiCares’ COVID-19 Relief Fund Now Depleted of Financial Resources

The charitable foundation MusiCares, an organization dedicated towards supporting music industry professionals in need of financial assistance, has run out of monetary resources. Amid the ongoing pandemic, MusiCares launched their COVID-19 Relief Fund last month, which has drawn an unprecedented influx of applications. The depletion of funds has now caused the organization to halt new applications for the time being. The fund, which was started with two $1 million donations from the organization itself as well as its affiliate, The Recording Academy, went on to raise $14 million in total. The resources were raised from individuals as well as charitable corporate partners including SiriusXM, Spotify, and Pandora. However, as the pandemic has persisted, the orga...
