As someone who became a teenager in the ’90s, casual sportswear was a big deal. Britpop stars such as Damon Albarn and Liam Gallagher were often spotted wearing Adidas zip-ups and T-shirts. The Spice Girls had Sporty Spice, whose whole “thing” was wearing sportswear. Then, in 1997 Jason Nevins’s remix of Run-D.M.C.’s “It’s Like That” came out, and it once again made me consider sportswear in a way I hadn’t before. I loved how casual it was but how, when kept pristine, it still looked smart. I could probably go on, but all of these above influences played a role in my love of layering casual sports tops, trousers and sneakers into my own wardrobe. There are three vintage Adidas pieces I wear regularly: a pair of ...
Just because we’re mainly staying inside our houses, balconies or (if we’re lucky) gardens, that doesn’t mean we can’t still spend five minutes looking at shoes. Anything too high or too sparkly is retiring to the back of our wardrobes, for the time being, but sandals (once they are sufficiently worn in, of course) can conveniently double as slippers. We’ve already brought you the sandal trends that are leading this year, but there are five sandal styles, in particular, that I keep spotting on my Instagram feed. One pair is close to our hearts, as Who What Wear has just launched shoes. Our thong sandals in white, snake and black have been particularly popular with our friends. Arizona Love’s Velcro-strap sandals are as cheery as they get thanks...
There is honestly no great mystery as to why some people possess an all-encompassing love for shoes. It’s because even when you’re wearing an outfit that makes you feel a bit meh, a great pair of shoes can suddenly make it feel perfect. But there are a few people who have really curated an impeccable shoe wardrobe. One such person is Ellie Delphine, also known as Slip Into Style. The influencer and stylist is originally from Martinique but is currently living in Paris. I’ve been a follower of her page for over a year and her knack of not just finding the coolest new shoes, but knowing how to style them is rarely rivalled. (She’d give Carrie Bradshaw a run for her, well, shoes.) It’s why I decided to interview her on all things footwear and glean some...
Of all the microtrends that have popped up this summer the daisy trend has to be my favourite. I’m often not so bothered by ostentatious, overly pretty florals but I’ve had a change of heart. The reason? It’s all to do with one brand in particular: Fabrizio Viti. The Italian designer might not be a name you immediately know but you will instantly recognise the fashion houses he’s created footwear for—from Gucci to Prada, he now remains the Shoe Style Director of Louis Vuitton where he’s been since 2004. It’s no surprise then that his eponymous label, which he launched in 2016, has given us a host of incredibly chic shoes. This season, my favourites have been the daisy-adorned clogs, pastel yellow and tan daisy heels and two-strap sandals....
As with all major shoe trends, well, especially of recent years, it starts with one brand: The Row. The pared-back aesthetic of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s brand has created so many brilliant footwear styles—from last summer’s strappy sandal to winter’s chunky tread boot. And now? Today, it’s the turn of the closed-toe sandal. The Row‘s version sold out some time ago but that doesn’t mean there aren’t other seriously cool versions out there. Personally, I love Charles & Keith’s patent iterations. The black is chic but the yellow ones have a summer charm to them that I can’t resist. Then there are versions from New Look and ASOS. But if you’re looking for something designer then French brand K.Jacques has ...
In the summer of last year, you couldn’t scroll through Instagram without seeing at least one image of The Row’s Bare Mid-Heel Strappy Sandals. (You know the ones.) The minimalist shoes with a skinny mid-heel and three very strategically placed thin straps. From editors and influencers to It girls and celebrities, the shoes had a very stylish fan base the world over and garnered the coveted title of a sellout accessory. Of course, when any item becomes that popular, it spawns a trend, and as expected, minimalist, barely there strappy sandals began appearing everywhere. From contemporary to high-street brands, strappy sandals acquired a cult-like status. This year, it seems the trend has no intention of slowing down. Between The Row’s new colourways and iterations acr...
Sandal brand Arizona Love popped up on my radar last year when I spotted a steady stream of Instagram influencers wearing the printed trek sandals. Jessie Bush, Erica Davies and our very own Who What Wear columnist Monikh were all spotted wearing the shoes. There was only one problem: They kept selling out. Thankfully, the brand has created even more styles and has been restocked on various online retailers. Much like the Velcro “dad” sandals by Chanel, Teva‘s classic hikers and all the other iterations before and after, these are sandals of the practical variety. While they’re a traditional hiking style, the multicoloured fabric wrapped around the straps makes them so much more fun. The brand was started only a couple of years by Fren...

I love it when items of clothing really last. And I don’t just mean in terms of trends, although that is helpful, but durability too. One pair of sandals that I’ve worn repeatedly over the past four summers is a pair of black block-heel sandals from & Other Stories. They’re classic, not too high and go with everything from jeans to midi dresses. They’re the kind of shoes I can easily wear in the office, as they’re not too high to walk around in, but they’ve also seen me through quite a few weddings. This season, & Other Stories has had a great drop of footwear that is ideal for this summer and the next few years to come. The high-street store often combines current trends with classic styles, so whenever you buy from this shop, I always think you’re getting more...
Given this week’s weather, you might feel like now is not the right time to start thinking about sandals, but let me tell you—summer is right around the corner (nine days away, to be precise!). As the days have become longer and blue skies become a more common occurrence, I can’t help but think of the warm days ahead and start planning outfits for when they do arrive. Right now, it seems high time for an at-home DIY pedicure, particularly as the high street is already packed with covetable slides, sandals and summery footwear.
