Sharon Van Etten Releasing Deluxe Edition of Latest Album in November

Sharon Van Etten‘s 2022 album We’ve Been Going About This All Wrong will be re-released as a deluxe edition on Nov. 11 via Jagjaguwar, complete with three previously unreleased tracks. The first, the dramatic, piano-heavy “Never Gonna Change,” is out today. Co-produced by Van Etten and Daniel Knowles, the song “is about managing depression and anxiety in the midst of isolation — coping with recurring fears throughout adulthood, acknowledging that flaws, fears and triggers canʼt be overcome. They are a constant part of oneʼs identity to learn to be at peace with.” [embedded content][embedded content] The deluxe edition of We’ve Been Going About This All Wrong will also include the previously unreleased “When I Die” and two standalone singles, “Porta” and “Used to It.” Van Etten told SPIN in...

The Sandlot, Sharon Van Etten and The Beast

On June 1, Lauren Denitzio of Brooklyn-based band Worriers tweeted “Ok, so when are we going to talk about the fact that the title of the new Sharon Van Etten record is a Sandlot reference.” Denitzio made a good point, so SPIN reached out to Van Etten to have that talk. That Sandlot reference, the line “We’ve been going about this all wrong” became the title of Van Etten’s sixth album — a beautiful, expansive and exploratory record that is both an honest dissection of the trauma of the last few years and an earnestly hopeful look forward. Fresh off a recent tour of the UK, Van Etten had a lot to say about her new record, We’ve Been Going About This All Wrong, her line about using the bathroom after doing dishes and which character from The Sandlot she most identifies with. Or as she put it...

The Best Rock Albums of 2022 (So Far)

Compared to the last couple of years, 2022 has been a bonanza of incredible rock record releases. It seems like every week there are two or three projects just begging for proper time and attention. Many artists who were kept off the road due to the pandemic and were inspired to write during their forced, sabbatical and have returned with fresh perspectives and new sounds. Then there were those who held back some of their best material to wait and see how the state of the world shook out. However they got to 2022, and it’s a joy to finally begin to hear these legitimately righteous records. It’s probably a little too soon for me to declare an absolute favorite album out of the bunch we’ve gotten so far. It’s been such an eclectic year for rock albums, with artists of every stripe truly del...

Sharon Van Etten has a new album on the way. Titled We’ve Been Going About This All Wrong. [embedded content][embedded content] The indie rocker’s sixth record is out May 6 via Jagjaguwar. Van Etten took on the record’s guitar, synthesizers, piano, drum machine, wurlitzer, keys, and more. Her regular touring band recorded with her, including Jorge Balbi on drums, Devon Hoff on bass, and musical director Charley Damski on synthesizers and guitars. Yet unlike her prior releases, Van Etten will not release singles leading up to the album’s release date. “I wanted to approach this release differently,” Van Etten says, “to engage my fans in an intentional way, in an effort to present the album as a whole body of work. These ten songs are designed to be listened to in order, at once, so that a m...

Sharon Van Etten Shares New Single ‘Used to It’ and Accompanying Video

Sharon Van Etten is back with her second release of the year, “Used to It.” The singer-songwriter originally wrote the track after being asked to help create a score for Baby God, an HBO documentary about a fertility specialist who impregnates women with his own sperm. “Ultimately, the film team changed their musical direction, but I found myself welcomely challenged to the idea of writing a song about the concept of family, connection through blood, nature vs nurture, while attempting to incorporate ideas of love and the complexities of science and technology,” she explained in a statement. “I am grateful for this song to be able to have a new life, relating more to the times we have all been living through and redefining the meaning of this song by focusing on the positives of seeking co...

Sharon Van Etten Shares New Single and Video for ‘Porta’

Sharon Van Etten is back with her first solo song since 2020 with “Porta.” The anthemic, but calm, song details feelings of loss of selfhood and security. Van Etten sings, “Want to hold head up, donʼt want to stay down/I want to live my life/But you wonʼt allow.” [embedded content][embedded content] “Porta” was written in 2020 “at one of my lowest lows,” Van Etten said in a statement. “For most of my adult life I have struggled with bouts of depression and anxiety and coping mechanisms, and I sometimes let those dark moments get the best of me. During this time I felt very dissociated. Not connected to my body and I felt out of control.” The accompanying video shows her in a state of cathartic healing, practicing pilates. The video was inspired by Van Etten’s weekly meetings with her ...

Hear Sharon Van Etten, Angel Olsen’s Otherworldly Rendition of ‘Like I Used To’

Forty years after “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” came out in 1981, two of Stevie Nicks’ musical heirs — Sharon Van Etten and Angel Olsen — reincarnated her prowling duet for the pandemic era. “Like I Used To” is another blistering ball-and-chain ballad, except this fraught relationship is about the one you have with your own mind. “Well, my head’s gone today/ sell my past for a way to sing and have something left to say,” Van Etten sings in her mysterious drawl. As with Nicks/Petty, the strange magic of “Like I Used To” lies in the polarity of Van Etten and Olsen’s distinctive voices. Together, they produce a sound that’s somehow both bitter and alluring, like two magnets that never touch. These qualities are heightened on the new, stripped-down rendition Etten and Olsen performed on Jimm...

Sharon Van Etten Covers Daniel Johnston’s ‘Some Things Last A Long Time’

Sharon Van Etten released a cover of Daniel Johnston’s “Some Things Last A Long Time,” which was recorded for 2020’s Feels Good Man, a documentary about the creator of the internet meme Pepe the Frog. Last year she released an original song, “Let Go,” that was featured in the film. Van Etten’s version of “Some Things Last a Long Time” takes the melancholy song and gives it an edge. With a deep synth sound trailing throughout the song that swallows her powerful vocals as the chorus rises and falls, it sounds as if it should play as the credits roll on a thrilling coming-of-age film. Lucinda Williams Covers Sharon Van Etten’s ‘Save Yourself’

A few weeks ago, it was announced that Sharon Van Etten’s epic is getting a fairly epic reissue treatment. One of the best parts of the reissue is that Van Etten tapped a select group of musicians to cover the songs on the album. So far, we’ve heard songs from Big Red Machine and IDLES. This week’s unveiling comes from none other than Lucinda Williams, who covers “Save Yourself.” On social media, Van Etten shared the story of their friendship, including when they first met at a show in New York in 2016. She explained how she was shy to meet the acclaimed singer-songwriter at first, but that (as they say) is ancient history. <!– // Brid Player Singles. var _bp = _bp||[]; _bp.push({ “div”: “Brid_10143537”, “obj”: {“id”:”...
