Senegalese navy seizes 8 tonnes of cannabis resin from boat

The Senegalese navy on Sunday intercepted a boat smuggling over 8 tonnes of cannabis resin through the waters off the West African nation’s coast, the armed forces ministry said in a statement. The vessel, which was flying a Togolese flag, was stopped 140 kilometres (87 miles) from the coastal capital of Dakar with seven crew members on board. After escorting the boat to a naval base in Dakar, the authorities discovered the 8.37 tonnes of hashish split between 279 bags. The boat was also carrying sacks of plaster, the ministry said on Monday. It did not provide a street value for the seized drugs. Earlier this year, authorities in Niger seized 17 tonnes of cannabis resin worth around 31 million euros ($37 million), the largest bust in the country’s history. According to Interpol, drug king...

Neymar: No place for racism

Paris Saint-Germain and Istanbul Basaksehir played their Champions League match to a conclusion on Wednesday, 24 hours after it had been suspended, with Neymar scoring a hat-trick before saying both teams had felt compelled to make a stand against racism in what was an unprecedented protest over an alleged comment by an official. PSG won the game 5-1 after it restarted where it had stopped the previous day, in the 14th minute, following a touchline argument over accusations the Romanian fourth official, Sebastian Coltescu, had described Basaksehir’s Cameroonian assistant coach Pierre Webo as “black”, or “negru” in Romanian. “Sometimes in extreme circumstances these things need to be done to see if the world can change a little,” said Neymar, who together with other players and the new team...

Nigeria star leads Club Brugge past FC Zenit St. Petersburg

Club Brugge began their 2020-21 Champions League campaign with a 2-1 triumph over Zenit St. Petersburg. Goals from Nigeria’s Emmanuel Dennis and Charles De Ketelaere scored the goals as Philippe Clement’s men silenced the Russian Premier League title holders at Krestovsky Stadium. The Belgians went into the encounter without goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, Cote d’Ivoire’s Odilon Kossounou and Michael Krmencik, who are in isolation after contracting Covid-19, while Simon Deli was unavailable due to suspension. In a tight first-half that saw Dennis, Mats Rits, Clinton Mata getting cautioned by referee Benoit Bastien, both teams were unable to find the net as they adopted a cautious approach. Club Brugge’s first chance at goal came in the 30th minute when Dennis found his way in the hosts’ goal ar...

Manchester United eye €25 million Ligue 1 star to bolster defence

According to the Daily Record, Manchester United have entered the race to sign Lille defender Gabriel Magalhaes. The Red Devils invested heavily in shoring up the defence by bringing in Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka last season. Despite the improvement shown, there are still issues to be ironed out. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is now considering adding the Lille star to his United roster. The Brazilian is valued at a modest €25m. Competition for the 22-year-old will be high with the likes of Everton, Napoli, and Inter Milan all keen. According to the report, Napoli see the young Samba star as a replacement for defensive lynchpin Kalidou Koulibaly – another player United are interested in. The fact that they view him capable of replacing the Senegalese is a testament to the promise he has sh...
