Sloppy Schalke Get Punished by Gritty Augsburg

Schalke welcomed Augsburg to the Veltins-Arena in a clash between the two teams with the longest winless streaks in the Bundesliga, knowing that a win would take them back to 6th in the table. Schalke started well but Rami Khedira won a free kick for Augsburg early on, which Eduard Löwen converted with a thumping strike. The Royal Blues dominated possession throughout, but failed to create any clear-cut chances in the first half. The story of the second half was the same. In the 76th minute, a long ball and a mistake from Kenny allowed Sarenren Bazee to score. Another mistake in the dying stages by Levant Mercan allowed substitute Sergio Córdova to capitalise and score. In the end, Schalke’s lack of attacking threat and wastefulness cost them the match, as Augsburg were rock-solid and grit...

Overall Report: At the start it seemed that we would have a cracker on our hands. Schalke came close to breaking through the Dortmund defence in the first few minutes, but they couldn’t create a proper chance. Dortmund grew into the game and pierced Schalke’s defence with some precise passing, ingenious touches and a clinical assist and finish. After that they never looked back. Goals on either side of half-time saw them go clear. Schalke looked to get better after the third, but then Dortmund got a fourth goal through Raphael Guerreiro and the game was put to bed. It didn’t seem to be much of a derby, let alone the mother of all derbies, but let’s be happy that there was a game in the first place. German Bundesliga restarts with ‘ghost’ derby

Borussia Dortmund host Schalke 04 in Germany’s fiercest derby on Saturday but no more than 300 people will be in and around the 80,000 capacity arena due to COVID-19 restrictions as the Bundesliga gets back to business after a two-month break. The Bundesliga is the first major sports league to resume since world sport was brought to a standstill by the pandemic, and players will have to abide by a strict set of health guidelines aimed at minimizing the risk of infection. Fans will not be able to attend the matches as part of the safety regulations, leaving it up to the players to provide the spark for what are being called “ghost” games. “It will most certainly be the most unusual derby in history,” Dortmund’s head of pro players Sebastian Kehl said this week. “This game lives off fans, th...

La Liga congratulates Bundesliga ahead football league return

The Spanish La Liga has congratulated Germany’s Bundesliga for announcing its imminent return as Spain’s top-flight stepped up its own comeback preparations. The Bundesliga was given the green light to resume later this month when chancellor Angela Merkel made the announcement during a news conference on Wednesday. Strict testing and matchday procedures will be put in place by the German government, with football seemingly set to resume on May 15 having been paused in mid-March. LaLiga outlined its own plan for a staggered return to training on Monday, with teams set to begin individual work this week before gradually moving to group sessions, the ultimate aim being to re-commence the 2019-20 season in June. Spanish clubs began testing players for COVID-19 on Tuesday and LaLiga sees the Bu...
