As festival season draws to a close, techno and house music fans across Southern California united in sunny San Diego last weekend for the fall edition of CRSSD Festival. Since its inception in 2015, CRSSD has treated music fans to three stages packed with top-flight house, techno and electronica artists over a two-day period. This September’s iteration was no different under the technicolor sunsets of Waterfront Park, which offered thumping bass and incredible musical performances. Each of CRSSD’s three stages has a distinct style, providing something for everyone in the electronic music community. Palms, the first stage you encounter upon entering the festival, highlights primarily house artists who keep you dancing all day long. On Saturday, Wax Motif had fans grooving to a gritty...

The second annual DAY.MVS XL went down in San Diego, Calif., earlier this month, and we’ve got the music to prove it. Produced by the same crew that puts on San Diego’s longstanding festival — and happening at the city’s Waterfront Park, where CRSSD also goes down — DAY.MVS XL 2022 hosted a lineup including Eric Prydz, Duke Dumont, Spencer Brown, Nastia, Dixon and Claptone, with 27 acts altogether playing over two stages during the weekend event. Like CRSSD before it, DAY.MVS XL is a boutique festival that offers an alternative to larger, more commercialized events, with its manageable scale, discerning lineups, and down-to-earth vibe making it a destination for mature dance fans looking to get into the groove outside the confines of a club or mega-fest. When COVID first hit and dancefloors closed, Alina Gordon carefully observed new guidelines and restrictions on gathering. And she realized that for so many, music is religion. So the entrepreneur, musician, community builder and self-appointed “Ministress of Music” took it upon herself to create the Church of Music (COM). Religion, faith and practice are all cornerstones of any church. Since 2020, over 100 weekly COM “sermons” have united San Diego’s underground house music scene by hosting live dance music events at secret locations, which are disclosed every Sunday morning. Every sermon—which runs from 1 to 8pm—features a variety of house music and its many sub-genres, ranging from tech and deep to pro...

The symphony will work with the Port of San Diego to program 110 days throughout the year. The remainder of the time, the space will continue to function as a public park with revamped basketball courts and exercise areas. “This is a very unique partnership with the Port. Eighty-five percent of the time this is a public park. People can come and walk around. They can sit and listen to rehearsals. They can watch art being made,” says Gilmer. “Then 15% of the time, we occupy it. Keeping that balance was critical. I think the Port saw this as a real opportunity for activating our coastline and bringing people to the bay that haven’t been down here before.” For Knight’s performance, the venue was outfitted to welcome 3,500 guests – both seated and spread out on...
