Safdie Brothers Producing Andy Kaufman Documentary
A documentary on the late, great Andy Kaufman is finally in the works. Emmy-nominated filmmaker Alex Braverman will direct a forthcoming deep dive into the comedy legend’s life, up until a battle with cancer cut it short in 1984 at age 35. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the feature project has just started production, with Josh and Benny Safdie executive producing via their company Elara Pictures. Kaufman’s life was previously memorialized in the 1999 biopic Man on the Moon, in which Jim Carrey portrayed the Saturday Night Live star. That film, in turn, was examined in the 2017 doc Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond, which mostly centered around Carrey’s method acting approach to bringing Kaufman to life. Pee-wee Herman actor Paul Reubens is the subject of an upcoming HBO documentary produced by Uncut Gems filmmakers the Safdie Brothers. Directed by Matt Wolf, the two-part documentary is described as “a kaleidoscopic portrait told in two parts” and “traces the life of the imaginative artist behind one of pop culture’s most celebrated and unlikely icons: Pee-wee Herman.” “I’ve been working with HBO since they were called Home Box Office! I’m honored and excited to continue my long history there. I love HBO, but I’m not going to marry them,” Reubens said in a statement. The Safdie Brothers Ink Deal with HBO
Benny and Josh Safdie, the brothers behind the instant cult favorite Uncut Gems, have signed a two-year, first-look deal with HBO. As THR reports, they’ll create new projects under their own banner of Elara Pictures. Two longtime Safdie collaborators, producer Sebastian Bear-McClard and writer Ronald Bronstein, are also along for the anxiety-inducing ride. All of their HBO efforts will be executive produced by A24, which had previously worked with the Safdie’s on Uncut Gems and Good Time. A24 has lately developed a robust relationship with Home Box Office, including producing the new hit Euphoria.
