Instead, Airtel Money will now be operating under the name ‘Airtel Money Kenya Limited’. “Following this business separation, Airtel Money Kenya Limited will take over and continue the provision of the Airtel Money Services, in collaboration with the licensed telecommunications network of Airtel Networks Kenya Limited,” reads the announcement from Airtel. Kenyan Government Seeks to Control Safaricom Call Charges
The Kenyan government wants to control the rates that Safaricom charges rivals for terminating calls on its network to protect small telecommunications firms. The new regulations set by the state seek to bar dominant telcos from making profits from mobile termination rates (MTRs). In this regard, Safaricom will now charge fees to cover only the costs of interconnecting calls from its competitors. MTRs, according to Business Daily, are the charges levied by a mobile service provider on other telecommunications service providers for terminating calls on its network. Kenya’s leading telco launched 5G technology for the first time in the country in March, starting with 15 sites. Now the telco says it wants to take the supremely high-speed internet to additional towns.
