This review is part of our coverage of the 2022 SXSW Film Festival. The Pitch: The timing of DMZ is maybe not the greatest, depending on whether or not you’re up for engaging with a story about urban warfare at a time when that sort of literal real-life horror is headline news. But the new HBO Max original series, based on the DC comics series and executive produced by Ava DuVernay, still stands out for its compelling premise and dynamic cast, despite a few issues largely stemming from its format. New World Order: When we first meet Alma Ortega (Rosario Dawson) in the not-too-distant future, she’s working as a medic in an intake facility for those who have tried illegally to enter the United States of America — not to be confused with the Free States of America, because seven years ago, a ...
It’s been a long and bumpy road, but Clerks 3 is finally coming to fruition Earlier Monday, news broke that Lionsgate officially picked up Kevin Smith’s upcoming sequel. Pre-production for Clerks 3 is currently underway in New Jersey, and production will kick off next month. According to Deadline, the cast will include major key players from the first two Clerks films, including Jeff Anderson as Randal, Brian O’Halloran as Dante, Jason Mewes as Jay, Smith as Silent Bob, and Rosario Dawson as Becky. Smith tweeted that Elias, who debuted in Clerks II, will also appear in Clerks 3. Smith has already written the screenplay for Clerks 3, and will serve as the movie’s director, as is par for the course with his filmography. Liz Destro and Jordan Monsanto are joining the team as producers as well...
HBO Max is developing a Batman spin-off series for TV, and apparently they’re crafting a Batman miniseries for your ears, too. Say hello to Batman: The Audio Adventures, a new podcast by HBO Max starring Jeffrey Wright as the Caped Crusader. Don’t expect it to get too dark, however, because the roll call also includes comedic actors like Seth Meyers, Jason Sudeikis, and dozens more. Written and directed by Dennis McNicholas, Batman: The Audio Adventures is a multi-episode series that’s putting “a comedic take” on the Dark Knight, notes The Hollywood Reporter. It’s separate from DC’s multi-year deal with Spotify — which includes the new Batman Unburied podcast written by David S. Goyer — and as such it will hit WarnerMedia’s streaming service sometime in 2021. To help draw out the laug...
The gift of the Thanksgiving gods smiles upon us this day, as we awaken from our turkey-and-stuffing-induced comas, slide over to Disney+, and find another episode of The Mandalorian awaiting us, “The Jedi”. Finally, after half a season of standalone adventures, we finally make some progress in Din Djarin’s (Pedro Pascal) mission to bring Baby Yoda back to his people, the Jedi. Along the way, we meet yet another old friend from the animated shows, an even older friend from ’80s genre classics, and learn perhaps a bit too much about Mando’s adorable young charge. Let’s go over everything we learned, and a few things non-animated show watchers might not know about this week’s special guest. Of course, it goes without saying that there are some major, major spoilers ahead. You must be ca...
Source: Bonnie Biess / Getty Rosario Dawson couldn’t help indulging in virtual P.D.A. towards her boo, Cory Booker, after he won his bid for reelection as New Jersey’s senator. The 51-year-old politician closed the race with 60% of the vote against Republican Rikin Mehta on Election Day (Nov. 3). After the news dropped, he headed to social media thanking his constituents for their trust and support in his leadership. “New Jersey, I’m once again humbled by the faith you’ve placed in me,” he said on Twitter. “Thank you for standing with me and allowing me the honor of representing my home state in Washington. Our work is far from finished.” Dawson, 41, immediately followed up with a reply. “Well done my love. We’re blessed to have your grace and brilliance represent us.” We...
Phoebe Bridgers, Michael Stipe, and Hayley Williams (photos by Ben Kaye); Ruth Bader Ginsburg Despite the fact that the COVID-19 outbreak currently working its way through the government possibly started at her nomination ceremony, the GOP seem set on pushing through Judge Amy Coney Barrett’s confirmation hearings. Even worse, the move goes against the dying wishes of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the iconic Supreme Court Judge whose seat Barrett is trying to fill, and will likely spell the end of Roe v. Wade, the ACA, and other progressive causes. In response, a number of politicians, musicians, and entertainers are joining forces for a virtual RBG tribute called “Honor Her Wish”. Set to take place October 12th (the first scheduled day of Barrett’s SCOTUS hearings) at 8:00 p.m. ET, the event ...
TBS is adding a talent competition to its roster — and it’s not looking for the next great singer or comedian. The cable outlet has ordered 10 episodes of Go-Big Show, which will feature “supersized talents” including monster truck drivers, alligator trainers and stunt archers, among others. The show has begun production in Macon, Georgia; host Bert Kreischer and judges Snoop Dogg, Rosario Dawson, Jennifer Nettles and Cody Rhodes announced the series Wednesday night in a promo that aired across TBS and sister networks TNT and TruTV. “Go-Big Show celebrates unique, untraditional and unforgettable American talent,” said Corie Henson, executive vp and head of unscripted programming for TBS, TNT and TruTV. “Each contestant brings tremendous heart and swagger...
The Force is strong with Timothy Olyphant. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Deadwood star has joined the Star Wars galaxy by signing on for the second season of Disney+’s The Mandalorian. As of publication, there’s no word on who he’ll be playing, but given Olyphant’s hunky looks and trademark wit, we’re kind of, maybe, okay, we totally are, hoping he’s playing Dash Rendar from Shadows of the Empire. That may be wishful thinking, but seeing how we’re seeing Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka Tano and Temuera Morrison as Boba Fett, it’s not exactly out of the question. At the very least, it would connect that Star Wars legend. Whatever the case, Olymphant joins a stacked cast that also includes The Terminator and Aliens star Michael Biehn in an undisclosed role. We’ll also take Biehn as Renda...
