Dave Grohl and Greg Kurstin Cover Elastica’s “Connection”: Watch

Dave Grohl and Greg Kurstin are continuing their eight nights of service to prominent Jewish musicians. For the sixth installment of their Hanukkah Sessions songs series, the Foo Fighters frontman and Grammy-winning producer have covered Elastica’s Britpop classic “Connection”. “From Brit Milot to Britpop…here’s one of the coolest tracks from the 90’s….sung by the very cool…and Jewish…Justine Frischmann…ELASTICA!” wrote the duo in a tweet posted to Foo Fighters’ Twitter account. Previously, the duo paid tribute to Jewish greats like the Beastie Boys (“Sabotage”), Drake (“Hotline Bling”), Mountain (“Mississippi Queen”), Peaches (“Fuck the Pain Away”), and Bob Dylan (“Rainy Day Women #12 & 35”). This run of covers will likely be the last chunk of Grohl-related content of 2020, but there’...

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band Reunite on SNL for First Public Performance in Four Years: Watch

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band hit the stage on Saturday Night Live this evening for their first public performance together in nearly four years. Coming in support of their new album Letter to You, Bruce and the band delivered rousing performances of “Ghosts” and “I’ll See You In My Dreams”. Catch the replay below. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 restrictions, not everyone from the E Street Band was present for the performance. Earlier in the week, Springsteen announced that founding bassist Garry Tallent and violinist Soozie Tyrell would be absent due to “restrictions and concerns.” In Tallent’s place, Springsteen enlisted Jack Daley of the Disciples of Soul. On Thursday night, Springsteen appeared on The Tonight Show and discussed a range of topics, including his earliest g...

Greta Van Fleet Share New Video for “Age of Machine”: Watch

Greta Van Fleet have shared a video for their latest single, “Age of Machine”. The storyline of the seven-minute visual accompaniment is difficult to follow, but its press release insinuates that the narrative murkiness is intentional. Throughout the video, the classic rock nostalgists are seen admiring an ancient statue in the middle of an empty warehouse, cruising through a tunnel on motorcycles, and wandering around the desert in street clothes. Those seemingly unrelated shots of the band are interspersed with panoramas of oil fields, esoteric home videos with a ’70s-esque film quality, and vaguely Kubrick-like scenes of frontman Josh Kiszka receiving eye-drops in a medical facility. At one point, they take turns drilling and chipping away at the Greco-Roman statue they were admiri...

Tom Petty’s Estate Releases “Something Could Happen” Video Starring Lauren Cohan: Watch

Tom Petty’s estate has released a new music video for “Something Could Happen”. It’s directed by Warren Fu (The Strokes, Daft Punk) and stars The Walking Dead’s Lauren Cohan. “Something Could Happen” appears on Wildflowers & All the Rest, Petty’s new double album reissue of his 1994 record Wildflowers. When finding inspiration for the track’s music video, Fu fell hard for “Into the Great Wide Open”, off Petty’s 1991 album of the same name, and decided to create a modern spinoff on its imaginative, out-of-left-field video. “In looking back on Tom’s old music videos, it was obvious that he had a lot of fun with them and was not afraid to get a bit weird,” said Fu in a statement. “I wanted to create another modern fairytale in the spirit of Tom’s music video for ‘Into the Great Wide Open’...

Ben Gibbard, Isaac Brock, Duff McKagan, and Mark Lanegan Cover “The Highwayman”: Watch

At the very least, the ongoing lockdown has resulted in some very odd musical pairings that likely wouldn’t have happened otherwise. The latest of these went down on December 5th, when Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard, Guns N’ Roses’ Duff McKagan, Modest Mouse’s Isaac Brock, and Mark Lanegan teamed up to cover the Jimmy Webb country classic, “The Highwayman”. The collaboration was part of SMooCH 2020, an annual benefit show for the Seattle Children’s Hospital that usually takes place in person, but was converted into livestream form this year for obvious reasons. The Seattle institutions Sub Pop Records and KEXP were two of the event’s biggest sponsors, so it made sense that both elite and slightly left-of-center members of the rock world were featured in the presentation. For their ...

Billy Corgan on Chris Cornell’s Death: “I’ve Been in That Exact Spot a Thousand Times”

During an interview on The Howard Stern Show this week, Billy Corgan spoke extensively about Chris Cornell’s death and how he could relate to the emotional state the Soundgarden singer was feeling in the moments prior to taking his own life. Stern asked Corgan if Cornell’s death in 2017 “triggered anything inside of you.” “Oh, yeah,” the Smashing Pumpkins frontman responded.” He then relayed “his own version” of the circumstances leading to Cornell’s suicide based on his own experiences. “I’ve stood in front of that mirror a thousand times — just like he did,” Corgan reflected. “You know, kind of an OK gig, you ain’t getting any younger. They weren’t playing the arena, they were playing the theater. I’ve been on those shit tours. You have to be an older band to know what I mean by that. I ...
