Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2021 Induction Ceremony to Take Place in Person

In a sign that things may be turning around in the battle against COVID-19, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announced today (March 2) that this year’s event will be held in person. The event will take place on Oct. 30 in downtown Cleveland at the Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse. This is the first time the event will be held at the home of the Cleveland Cavaliers. It was last held in Cleveland in 2018 at Public Hall. The 2019 ceremony was at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. “Ticketing capacity is an important question these days as we move through the health challenges of our nation but also get reopened again,” Rock Hall CEO Greg Harris said in a press conference that was broadcast online. “Ticket on-sale announcement will be in July. Until then, we’re going to monitor best practices and make su...

Dee Snider: Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Committee Is Made Up of “Arrogant Elitist Assholes”

Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider has slammed the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame committee as “arrogant elitist assholes,” citing a lack of respect for hard rock and heavy metal acts. Snider went on a rant against the Rock Hall during a Q&A session with fans on Twitter over the weekend. The subject popped up when a fan asked about Iron Maiden singer Bruce Dickinson’s declaration in 2018 that he would refuse induction if the legendary metal act was ever voted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. It just so happens that Iron Maiden are among the acts recently nominated for the 2021 class. Faced with the question, “Why would [Dickinson} or anyone for that matter refuse [induction]?”, Snider responded, “The RnR Hall committee members are arrogant elitist assholes who look down on metal &a...

Rock Hall of Fame 2021 Nominations: The Snubs, Surprises, and Long Shots

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame traditionally announces its annual slate of nominees in October and narrows it down to a set of official inductees in December. But like just about everything else, the Rock Hall’s schedule was disrupted last year by the COVID-19 pandemic, with the May induction ceremony concert delayed and downsized to a taped HBO special that aired in November. But this week, the gatekeepers in Cleveland finally announced the slate of 16 acts that will be narrowed down later this year to the five or seven artists who encompass the Class of 2021: Mary J. Some of the most notable nominees include Jay-Z, LL Cool J and Mary J. Blige as well Dionne Warwick and Chaka Khan. The rest of the 16 total nominees are rounded out by Fela Kuti, Kate Bush, Devo, Foo Fighters, the Go-Go’s, Iron Maiden, Carole King, New York Dolls, Todd Rundgren, Tina Turner, and Rage Against the Machine. How are some of these acts not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame already, though? But if you want to get technical, Tina Turner is already in there with her former partner Ike Turner. Also, this is LL Cool J’s fifth time being nominated—and we’re going to take anything but his induction as disrespect. ...

Trent Reznor on Approach to Adding Nine Inch Nails Members to Rock Hall Induction: “Make This F**king Happen”

Last month, Nine Inch Nails were officially inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Initially, Trent Reznor was set to be the only member enshrined, but the NIN mastermind saw to it that other members of the industrial band were inducted, as well. Nine Inch Nails were announced as part of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame class of 2020 back in January, with an induction ceremony originally set for May in Cleveland. The ceremony was eventually canceled due to the pandemic, and the 2020 inductees were instead honored with a November television special on HBO. In September, it was revealed that six current and former members of Nine Inch Nails — Atticus Ross, Robin Finck, Chris Vrenna, Danny Lohner, Ilan Rubin, and Alessandro Cortini  — would be added to the Rock Hall induction al...

Because of the pandemic, this year’s live ceremony was canceled and replaced with a pre-recorded two-hour special airing on HBO. Iggy Pop had the honors of introducing Nine Inch Nails into the Rock Hall of Fame. He began his remarks by describing his perception of the band’s music: “Listening to Nine Inch Nails’ music, which is so often called industrial, I actually hear funk. Just listen to ‘Closer’ — the foundation could be Stevie Wonder or George Clinton,” Pop noted. “On top of that is a focused and relentless process of emotional destruction which paints a portrait of pain, pressure, and dissatisfactio...

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductions Lose Luster Without Live Element: Review

It’s been a strange year for the music industry. Case in point: we’re finally watching the 2020 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductions in November, it’s all being done remotely by tape, and there are no musical performances. Nothing about this is normal, of course, and fans will surely miss the who’s who of rock royalty that can usually be seen rubbing shoulders at the ceremony, not to mention the opportunity to see our heroes climb on stage together — sometimes for the first time in years — to accept hardware and even take a stab at performing our favorite songs. Obviously, the raging COVID-19 pandemic made a normal induction ceremony impossible, and those who produced or took part in Saturday’s telecast deserve credit for finding a way to safely honor the best of the music industry. <i...

With No Live Performances on This Year’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Program, Here’s How the Producers Told the Honorees’ Stories

Peresman thinks the highlights packages turned out so well that he hopes to have them as the basis for a spinoff show in the future. “[Once the pandemic is over], the plan is to go back to the format that we had [with shorter clip packages, plus an introduction, acceptance speech and performance by each honoree]. What would be great is if we could create an additional program that could go a little deeper and tell some of these stories about the artists. If we could create some additional programming that we could run with our media partner [HBO] that goes a little deeper and tells the stories about these artists, that would be ideal.” The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony was originally set to be held on May 2 at Cleveland’s Public Hall. “We had hotels booked, flights booked, ...
