EDM.com’s Best of 2020: Performances

This year, the team at EDM.com is proud to publish four installments of “Best of 2020” coverage: Industry Leaders, Performances, Music Producers, and Songs. With no venues to perform at in 2020, it seemed at times as if artists simply blindfolded their eyes, threw a dart at a map, and travelled to places to perform—locations that are usually pipe dreams. However, due to the dogged fury of COVID-19 and the surge of streaming, these pie-in-the-sky destinations became the new norm for DJs who wanted to connect with fans in the absence of tours. To honor their creativity and seminal influences on the live music industry, we’ve recognized ten of the year’s best performances in dance music.  RÜFÜS DU SOL Live from Joshua Tree Filmed in late 2019 and released in ...

Watch This Drummer Crush a Live Cover of RL Grime’s Trap Classic “Core”

Ever since its release back in 2014, RL Grime‘s “Core” has remained a trap music classic. It is crystallized in the genre’s lore as one of its most groundbreaking and popular tracks, and one that still inspires artists to this day. “Core” has now received a monster live cover from drummer Calvin Kurt, who reworked the track with a raw and raucous flip. To add a little flair, Kurt also interlaced some spacey visuals to go along with his rendition, which is symbolic of an artist with a clear and unadulterated love of music. You can check out Kurt’s rendition of “Core” below and watch his many other covers via his YouTube channel. He has covered artists across the genre spectrum, but EDM seems to be a source of inspiration, evidenced by ra...

RL Grime’s 2020 Halloween Mix Doubles as a Quasi-Horror Film

RL Grime has finally unveiled the 9th edition of his annual Halloween mix, and it may have been the most memorable yet. The electrifying set was streamed live and paired with a dazzling live visual spectacle featuring zombies, hellbent robots, and bizarre monsters. It all started with the introduction, which RL Grime always uses to pull a rabbit out of his hat. This year, the trap music kingpin recruited none other than T-Pain, who handled intro duties with a Halloween-themed freestyle to the melody of his global hit “Buy U a Drank.” We like to think this little rendezvous may lead to a collaboration. What follows is RL Grime’s typical flurry of mind-bending bass music, highlighting the next wave of producers to usher in a new age of trap. Some of the track...

T-Pain Teases Potential Collaboration with RL Grime

Back in 2015, RL Grime tweeted that T-Pain “predicted everything.” However, we don’t think anyone, including the famed “Can’t Believe It” singer, could’ve predicted a collab between the two. Fast-forward to today, when T-Pain took to Twitter to tease a collaboration with RL Grime, who remains one of the most profile producers in trap music. T-Pain was cryptic in his word choice, only writing, “I killed it bro.” RL Grime’s annual Halloween mix is approaching, of course, so fans can hold out hope that T-Pain contributed either to the introduction or an entirely new track. Just like our friends over at Your EDM, we are hyped. It’s a long shot, but we’re going to go ahead and imagine they made a song in a mansion in W...

RL Grime Announces 15-Track Sable Valley Summer Compilation Due Out Next Month

RL Grime has declared this a Sable Valley summer with a forthcoming compilation due out next month. The “UCLA” producer and label head dropped a teaser for Sable Valley Summer Vol. 1, a record set to featuring a trove of talent from the producer’s rapidly expanding imprint. The compilation’s teaser video features a car radio display that suggests the project is likely to be packed with at least fifteen tracks. As the van cruises through the desert terrain with a cooling system seemingly on its last leg, there’s clearly no room for subtlety here—Sable Valley is planning on bringing the heat.    RL Grime’s Sable Valley imprint was established at the beginning of 2019 and has since grown into a tastemaker in the bass music space. With contrib...

Confirmed: UCLA Students Can’t Get Enough of RL Grime’s “UCLA”

RL Grime‘s single “UCLA” is entrenched as the de facto anthem of The University of California, Los Angeles. “UCLA,” which appears on the trap kingpin’s seminal sophomore album Nova, effectively etched its name in university lore since its ballyhooed summer 2018 release. The track’s intoxicating, technically pristine production and velvety vocals courtesy of Atlanta rapper 24hrs reverberate through virtually every single tailgate, mixer, sporting event, and frat party on the university’s campus, sending harmonic ripples of camaraderie through everyone that hears it. The song’s intrinsically rapturous sound, which is rooted in future bass, lends to an uplifting and euphoric ethos, which is something college students desperately ...
