Rina Sawayama has just shared the final single, “Hurricanes,” from her upcoming album, Hold the Girl, which is out this Friday. The song features a slew of melodic guitars and a gradual build before taking off and becoming a blissful anthem with lyrics about conquering and enjoying the challenges life throws at a person. “Hurricanes” follows the previously released Hold The Girl tracks “Phantom,” “Hold The Girl,” “Catch Me In The Air,” and “This Hell.” Sawayama is slated to trek throughout North America this November. The headlining 13-date run kicks off with a two-night stint at Brooklyn’s Great Hall at Avant Gardner and will close in on Nov. 23 in Los Angeles. Rina Sawayama has been performing the previously unreleased “Catch Me in the Air” at her recent shows, but today, she officially shared the track alongside its own fan-submitted footage visualizer. [embedded content][embedded content] The song is the second one Sawayama has released from her forthcoming sophomore release, Hold the Girl, which is due Sept. 2 via Dirty Hit. “Catch Me in the Air” is a tribute to her mother, who raised Sawayama as a single parent. “I really wanted to write about this weird relationship with single parents,” Sawayama said in a statement. “You do catch each other in the air.” Sawayama previously released “This Hell” off of Hold the Girl. Any wedding DJ in their right mind knows you can’t just start out the night with “Call Me By Your Name.” Jesus. That’s one you’ve got to build up to. And that’s why Rina Sawayama had to create “This Hell.” It’s the perfect amuse-bouche to Lil Nas X’s Temple of Raunch because it’s a love jam with the same warning label: If I’m not enough for God, I’ll happily ride with the Devil. Or as Sawayama puts it: “God hates us? Alright then!” “Saw a poster on the corner opposite the motel, turns out I’m going to hell If I keep on being myself,” Sawayama sings in the first verse. “Don’t know what I did, but they seem pretty mad about it.” With that out of the way, Sawayama spends the rest of the song in celebration mode. The video, which was directed by Ali Kurr, shows the pop star two-stepping down t...

“Chosen Family,” Rina Sawayama’s soaring ballad dedicated to LGBTQ+ individuals who lost family and friends after coming out, has just gotten a piano-driven makeover courtesy of Sir Elton John. A new lyric video shows Sawayama with flowing, mermaid hair and peony silk gloves, singing beside John in a glistening black blazer. The new version scales down some of the production of the original. The British singers trade verses over John’s delicate piano playing, before duetting on the triumphant, gale-force chorus: “We don’t need to be related to relate/ We don’t need to share genes or a surname,” John and Sawayama sing, poignantly. “You are, you are, my chosen family.” “It was such a joy and honor to rework ‘Chosen Family’ with the legendary Elton John,” Sawayama said in a statement. “I...
