The Alien saga isn’t over just yet. Fede Álvarez, the Uruguayan director of horror films like Don’t Breathe and the 2013 Evil Dead remake, is set to write and direct an original standalone Alien feature for 20th Century Studios. Ridley Scott — who directed the iconic first Alien film in 1979 and two of its successors — will produce the new project. Sources told The Hollywood Reporter that Álvarez, a massive fan of the franchise, pitched the idea to Scott years ago. Álvarez’s installment will be made for Hulu as part of 20th Century’s goal to put out at least 10 movies a year for the streaming service. The Alien franchise is a series of horror/sci-fi films that focus on a merciless otherworldly species called Xenomorphs, who inflict terror on humans by placing ...
The replicants keep replicating: Blade Runner 2099, a live-action sequel series to Denis Villeneuve’s stellar 2017 film Blade Runner 2049, which itself was a follow-up to Ridley Scott’s 1982 masterpiece Blade Runner, is in the works at Amazon Studios. Deadlinereports that Scott will be executive producing, which the man himself had all but confirmed last November when he said the pilot had been written. Now we know the scribe responsible: Silka Luisa, who is currently serving as showrunner for the Starz series Shining Girls starring Elisabeth Moss. As you no doubt guessed from the title, the series is set 50 years after Blade Runner 2049. Blade Runner 2099 is currently staffing its writer’s room, and there’s no casting news or date set for its r...
Ridley Scott had a surprise for fans during an interview with the BBC on Monday (November 22nd), revealing his beloved sci-fi classic Blade Runner is currently being adapted as a TV show. While he was on the topic, the director also gave an update on a previously announced Alien series. “We’re already into having written the pilot for Blade Runner and the bible. So, we’re already presenting Blade Runner as a TV show, which will probably be the first 10 hours,” Scott said on BBC’s Today radio program. Watch clips from the interview below the jump. In screenwriting terms, a bible is a document containing the details of the history of a series. Scott hasn’t discussed a live-action show based on the movie before, although an anime titled Blade Runner: Black Lotus debuted on Adult Swi...
Ridley Scott knows he’s a film legend, so he’s not taking the blame for his latest endeavor’s modest success. Instead, the English director has found a different explanation for why his historical drama The Last Duel flopped at the box office: millennials — or as he calls them, “The millenian.” Scott joined Marc Maron for a recent episode of the comedian’s WTF podcast to discuss his long-spanning career, and he took the time to reflect on the low sales of his latest picture, which drew only $4.8 million domestically from a $100 million budget in its October 15th opening weekend. Scott said he feared the Disney-owned 20th Century Studios would undersell the film — which sees Matt Damon and Adam Driver fight to the death in a medieval France duel — since Disney’s target audien...
The Pitch: On March 27, 1995, Maurizio Gucci (Adam Driver), then head of the luxury fashion label Gucci, was shot dead on the steps outside his Milan office. Two years later, his ex-wife, Patrizia Reggiani (Lady Gaga), and her accomplices were sentenced to prison, most of them for more than twenty-five-year sentences. But how did we get here? How did a woman who found herself at the top of the fashion world turn into a black widow? Ridley Scott‘s House of Gucci wants to answer those questions, with all the brio and style to which the Gucci name is accustomed. We flash back to the early ’70s, where a young Patrizia meets and charms the bookish Maurizio, who wants less than nothing to do with the Gucci dynasty, considering his strained relationship with his ailing father Rodolfo (J...

The latter was infamous for organizing a huge legal battle to gain control of Gucci from his uncle, Aldo Gucci (Al Pacino), only to threaten the co...
Ridley Scott is preparing to go back to ancient Rome, as the filmmaker says a script for Gladiator 2 is being “written now.” Speaking with (fittingly enough) EMPIRE, Scott confirmed that he has eyes to make the sequel to the 2000 classic Gladiator after he finishes his next project, KitBag. That film happens to star Gladiator villain Joaquin Phoenix, who’s set to play Napoléon Bonaparte alongside Jodie Comer (Scott’s upcoming The Last Duel) as the emperor’s wife, Joséphine. “I’m already having [the next] Gladiator written now,” Scott said. “So when I’ve done Napoleon, Gladiator will be ready to go.” Advertisement Related Video This isn’t the first time Scott has made mention of a Gladiator 2. Back in 2018, he was in talks with screenwriter Peter Craig (The Hun...
Netflix has been quietly working on a new heist series called Jigsaw — no, it’s not related to the infamous Saw villain — and it looks like they’ve found one of their leading men. Breaking Bad star Giancarlo Esposito has been tapped for the action-drama show, which is a loose adaption of a real-life event when $70 billion in bonds went missing in Manhattan during Hurricane Sandy. According to Deadline, Jigsaw tells the story of the largest heist ever attempted and the revenge, lies, and loyalties that surround it. Each episode of the show will take place at a different point in the heist’s timeline, extending as far back as 24 years before the gig to one year after the heist. Netflix described it as a “nonlinear approach to storytelling in a way where viewers are in control.” Joining the E...
