The writing for John Frusciante‘s upcoming electronic project was governed by the thought of “music being a solitary sculpture in sonic space.” So says the legendary Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist, who has announced an upcoming double-album, : I I . Much like a sculptor, Frusciante approached his follow-up to 2020’s Maya from a place of creative incrementalism. He leaned on analog technology, including the Monomachine and the Analog Four, to listen and iterate upon individual sequences until they were just right. “This music was made from sequences which never exceed a single note,” Frusciante writes of the process. “Many of these pieces being made on a single pattern.” Scroll to Continue Recommended Articl...
After almost four months off the air, cult music guide Bandsplain is back with new episodes each Thursday. The show went on hiatus when its parent company, Spotify’s Studio 4, disbanded earlier this year. But host Yasi Salek wasn’t ready to quit just yet, so she revived the program via Ringer Podcast Network last week. The first episode of the reboot: a four-hour, part-one crash course on Smashing Pumpkins. Bandsplain maintains its original mission of acquainting outsiders with subculture-spawning groups like Insane Clown Posse and My Chemical Romance. When it started in February 2021, the show operated under a somewhat traditional structure – it switched off between music and talk, but all episodes were roughly an hour long. They did open with an intro song composed and voiced by Bethany ...
Fresh off a global stadium tour and ahead of an appearance at Louder Than Life in Louisville this weekend, the Red Hot Chili Peppers have unveiled a new single. Titled “Eddie,” the song comes from Return of the Dream Canteen, which is out on Oct. 16. It is the band’s second album of the year and their second with returning guitarist John Frusciante and longtime producer Rick Rubin. “Eddie” is a tribute to Eddie Van Halen. Here’s what Anthony Kiedis said about the song: Sometimes we don’t realize how deeply affected and connected we are to artists until the day they die. Eddie Van Halen was a one of a kind. The day after his death Flea came into rehearsal with an emotional bassline. John, Chad and I started playing along and pretty soon with all our hearts, a song in his honor effortlessly ...
The Red Hot Chili Peppers stormed through performances of “Black Summer” and “Can’t Stop” tonight (Aug. 28) at the MTV Video Music Awards as part of a Cheech and Chong-introduced segment honoring the group with the Global Icon award. It was the Chili Peppers’ first performance on the VMAs since 2000. “I did want to thank the sassy mistress known as MTV for supporting us for a thousand years or more,” frontman Anthony Kiedis said after the performance (during which, surprisingly, only Flea was shirtless). “Really, really, really, I want to thank Flea and John and Chad Smith for giving me a purpose in my life for the last 40 years. I would have been a free-floating disaster in space if not for these boys.” Said Smith, “there’s another musical icon, global icon, and his name is my brother Tay...
The Red Hot Chili Peppers have released “Tippa My Tongue,” the first single from their previously announced second album of this year, Return of the Dream Canteen. In the video for the song, singer Anthony Kiedis drops a RHCP-logo-shaped tab on his tongue, it all gets wacky and weird from there. The funk-laden track is reminiscent of the band’s early years (and even references songs from the band’s early days) and a departure from “Black Summer,” the first single off April’s Unlimited Love. [embedded content][embedded content] Malia James directed the video for “Tippa My Tongue,” which was produced by Imposter. The upcoming Rick Rubin-produced double album follows Unlimited Love, which was also a double album. Return of the Dream Canteen is out on Oct. 14 via Warner Records, marking a...
Red Hot Chili Peppers kicked off their Unlimited Love world tour last night at Estadio Olímpico de la Cartuja in Seville, Spain. Though the band played some warm up gigs in Los Angeles back in April (which included an assist from George Clinton), the concert marked the first stadium show with guitarist John Frusciante in 15 years. The 18-song set featured a nice mix of songs off the new album and classic hits like “Scar Tissue,” “Under the Bridge,” “Soul to Squeeze,” “Can’t Stop,” and “By the Way,” but of course the biggest highlight was seeing Frusciante tear up the stage with his RHCP bandmates for the first time in a long time. RHCP will continue the European leg of tour through the rest of this month before embarking on North America in July. See fan-shot footage and the...

Josh Klinghoffer utilizes a deserted concrete bunker as an unexpected performance space in the new video for “Offend,” drawn from his latest album under the Pluralone moniker, This Is the Show. Klinghoffer strums a red, white and blue acoustic guitar in the Stephi Duckula-directed clip and is eventually accompanied by a doppelganger of himself on drums, before he climbs back out of the giant structure and wanders off into the surrounding desert. [embedded content][embedded content] “Once upon a time, this video we did looked rather like the future,” Klinghoffer says. “I’m thinking I’d like to go back to that future and look around, for the one that lies ahead seems a bit scary.” The former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist/current Pearl Jam touring multi-instrumentalist told SPIN earlier thi...
The Red Hot Chili Peppers played an emotional set yesterday (May 1) to close the first weekend of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, filling the slot vacated by Foo Fighters following the March 25 death of drummer Taylor Hawkins. Hawkins’ widow Alison and Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl were on hand for the performance, which Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith played on a kit featuring “Taylor” spelled out on his kick drum, encircled by a white hawk. “This means a lot to us to be able to play for them,” Smith told the audience following the set and then led them in a cheer of “We love Taylor.” Smith and Hawkins were close friends and performed together as recently as last fall during Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder’s annual Ohana Festival. Although Grohl was watching from the wings...
