The 100-Year-Old Grandmother of a Radio DJ Shared Her Favorite Electronic Songs—And Her Taste Is Impressive

On a recent radio show, DJ and Worldwide FM host Helfetica showed that the unifying power of electronic music spans multiple generations of listeners. Case in point: Helfetica brought her 100-year-old grandmother onto the show to discuss her impressions of electronic music, as well as her favorite records. While there’s often an impression the elderly are set in their ways, Helfetica describes her grandmother—affectionately referred to as “OB”—as “staggeringly open minded.” OB has twin passions in jazz and electronic music, and the two worlds oftenn converge on her favorite records, such as the ethereal Floating Points and Pharaoh Sanders collaboration, “Movement 1.” The two discussed their connection with a wide variety of electronic genres r...

Radio Station Calls On DJs to Remix Gaffe From New Zealand COVID-19 Response Minister

An unintentional slip of the tongue from New Zealand’s COVID-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins could be a catalyst for the career of one local music producer.  At a press conference over the weekend, Hipkins was addressing the notion that Kiwis living in high-density areas face the struggle of being unable to get outside without posing a risk to public health. However, in the moment he used some awkward phrasing, leading to a blunder in which he said Kiwis were looking to get out and “spread their legs” instead of “stretch their legs.” The gaffe wasn’t lost on anybody, including local dance music radio station George FM, who are now calling on music producers and DJs to give their best attempt at remixing the humorous audio clip. The station is off...

Tom Hanks has dipped his toes into the world of DJing. The legendary actor celebrated his 65th birthday by curating a special DJ set for his favorite radio station, Boss Radio 66. A testimonial from Hanks on the station’s website reads: “I have yet to hear a song on BR66 that I have not swooned over.” The celebratory DJ set, dubbed “Songs From The Back Of The Station Wagon,” was curated by Hanks himself and is chock full of 1960s surf rock, doo wop, and rock ‘n’ roll. Hanks even chimes in between the music, cracking jokes and musing about the classic tracks he selected. Vintage radio advertisements are also included, lending themselves to the aesthetic of the era of the music provided. Toward the end of the set, Hanks insists that “It’s gonna be...

World’s Longest-Working DJ Retires After Record-Breaking Career of 70 Years

The world’s longest-working DJ is easing into retirement at the end of an illustrious career.  Hong Kong’s Ray Cordeiro, a radio DJ with a career spanning an awe-inspiring 70 years, called it quits last month at the age of 96.  Cordeiro’s route into radio was a circuitous one, but appreciation for music was something he developed at a very young age. With a brother 10 years his senior, Cordeiro was heavily inspired by his tastes, listening to his brother’s record collection when he wasn’t home.  The start of Cordeiro’s professional career saw him working odd jobs, going from being a warden to a bank clerk. He eventually went back to pursuing his education in London, when he landed the opportunity of a lifetime to interview the Beatles...
