Phoebe Bridgers, Michael Stipe, and Hayley Williams (photos by Ben Kaye); Ruth Bader Ginsburg Despite the fact that the COVID-19 outbreak currently working its way through the government possibly started at her nomination ceremony, the GOP seem set on pushing through Judge Amy Coney Barrett’s confirmation hearings. Even worse, the move goes against the dying wishes of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the iconic Supreme Court Judge whose seat Barrett is trying to fill, and will likely spell the end of Roe v. Wade, the ACA, and other progressive causes. In response, a number of politicians, musicians, and entertainers are joining forces for a virtual RBG tribute called “Honor Her Wish”. Set to take place October 12th (the first scheduled day of Barrett’s SCOTUS hearings) at 8:00 p.m. ET, the event ...
The trend of charity livestream table reads is about to knock you back on your coal-mining asses. Jack Black has announced he’ll lead a reading of the pilot script for his failed 1999 comedy series Heat Vision and Jack. Written by Dan Harmon (Rick and Morty) and Rob Schrab (The Sarah Silverman Show) and directed by Ben Stiller, the Fox pilot Heat Vision and Jack is a wonderfully weird lo-fi vestige of the ’90s. It starred Black as Jack Austin, a former astronaut granted super-intelligence when his space capsule gets “inappropriately” close to the sun. However, his knowledge is only enhanced during daylight hours, returning to normal at night. Owen Wilson voiced his companion, Heat Vision, the result of Jack’s unemployed roommate, Doug, merging with his own motorcycle. Together, they stumbl...
Almost 33 years after the release of The Princess Bride, surviving members of the original cast reconvened on Sunday night for a virtual table read of William Goldman’s classic script. The live event was moderated by Patton Oswalt, who said, “This movie obviously meant a lot to my generation. This was the suburban mallrats’ intro to Monty Python, surrealism, and satire. So thank you, [director] Rob Reiner, thank you, [producer] Norman Lear, and the entire cast for bringing this to life.” Reiner, who stepped into the shoes of the late Peter Falk to play the grandfather, emphasized the broader picture before the event began: “We’re here basically to get Donald Trump out of the White House. That’s the main goal.” To that point, proceeds benefited the Democratic Party of Wiscons...
Yesterday mark the one-year anniversary of the death of Daniel Johnston. In honor of his memory, Electric Lady Studios organized “Honey, I Sure Miss You”, a livestream tribute headlined by Phoebe Bridgers, Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy, and Beck. But as it turned out, Johnston himself stole the show in a previously-unreleased home video. The event was named for Johnston’s 1991 track “Honey, I Sure Miss You”, and was organized with the cooperation of the Johnston estate. The musical memorial opened with a teaser of Johnston playing piano, followed by a few words from the man of the hour: “Hello, this is a recorded message,” it begins. “I am Dan Johnston. Though I am not with you physically, I am with you in heart. With all my heart. And I am thinking about you in hope that you are doing fin...

In remembrance of the lo-fi legend, a livestream tribute event headlined by Phoebe Bridgers, Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy, and Beck will be broadcast tonight. Titled “Honey I Sure Miss You”, after Johnston’s own 1991 song of the same name, the online music memorial will also feature performances from Waxahatchee, Kevin Morby, Devendra Banhart, and Maya Hawke, as well as The Lemon Twigs, Lucius, and Jesse Harris. Additionally, Johnston’s family is expected to show a previously unreleased home movie of the late songwriter. The tribute will stream on the website of New York’s famed Electric Lady Studios, as well as...
Happy birthday, Joe Strummer! The Clash frontman would have turned 68 today, August 21st, and some of the biggest names in entertainment came together to celebrate with a gargantuan livestream tribute. It included Bruce Springsteen, Bob Weir, Lucinda Williams, Jeff Tweedy, Josh Homme, and more, all while raising money for struggling live music venues. While the list of contributors is as starry as they come, “A Song for Joe: Celebrating the Life of Joe Strummer” placed the late icon front and center. It opened with Strummer’s voice offering a definition for himself: “Punk rock warlord, with warlord being one word.” Over a montage of dramatic photographs, the great songwriter explained how the music itself is separate from the intention. He said, “Music is not the point. What matters is how...
On Friday night, everyone from Fleet Foxes’ Robin Pecknold to The War on Drugs participated in the Vote Ready, a Concert for Voter Registration livestream. While most of the sets were filled with comforting covers and stripped-down renditions of classics, a few artists used the opportunity to debut new material, including Grizzly Bear and Department of Eagles singer-guitarist Daniel Rossen. Rossen played two tracks in total, opening with the nameless new song. The six-minute-long number saw the virtuoso churning out gorgeous, acoustic, classical guitar melodies that change pace and mood throughout. Afterwards, he immediately turned to the piano to play his 2012 ballad “Saint Nothing”. Watch the full set below. Last year, Rossen published an essay on his website explaining his slow retreat ...

Nick Cave performing “Galleon Ship” during Idiot Prayer: Nick Cave Alone at Alexandra Palace Tomorrow, July 23rd, Nick Cave will present a special solo piano concert performance called Idiot Prayer: Nick Cave Alone at Alexandra Palace. He’s previewing the gig today with a clip of the song “Galleon Ship”. Originally from his 2019 album Ghosteen, the already-spiritual track takes on a whole new life as Cave delivers it from behind a grand piano, pages of sheet music propped up before him, alone in the London venue’s ornate West Hall. It’s a truly powerful setting and Cave’s performance of the track is both visually and musically intense, displaying an evocative energy that transcends its digital presentation and feels truly palpable. Fans who tune into Idiot Prayer will get ...
‘Scott Pilgrim’ cast reunites for Entertainment Weekly script reading. To this day, Edgar Wright’s 2010 flick Scott Pilgrim vs. the World remains an essential entry in the millennial film canon. As promised, in celebration of its 10-year anniversary, the cast, crew, and Wright himself virtually reunited for a live reading of the entire script. The movie’s personnel was impressive a decade back, but today its full cast is genuinely something to marvel at. Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Chris Evans, Anna Kendrick, Jason Schwartzman, Aubrey Plaza, Alison Pill, Mae Whitman, Ellen Wong, Satya Bhabha, Brandon Routh, and Mark Webber were all miraculously available for the reading. Also present were Bryan Lee O’Malley, creator of the original Scott Pilgrim graphic novel, and th...
