Tool’s Maynard James Keenan Shares An Easter Story Short Film

Leave it to Tool, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer frontman Maynard James Keenan to offer an alternative to The Passion of Christ and Peter Rabbit for Easter viewing. “This is An Easter Story. There are many. But this one is ours,” Keenan says. In the seven-minute documentary-style clip — shot, directed, and narrated by Keenan — he speaks on the origin of Easter egg hunts, the vernal equinox, and more. As Keenan feeds and cares for the ducks at his Arizona vineyard home, he explains that searching for eggs on Easter is “not a random, non-sequitur ritual.” In his “no duck left behind” daily count, he discovers Larry is missing, and that she’s hidden in the brush to lay an egg. He also discusses the importance of community, concluding, “we can not always do this thing of life on our own.” An Ea...

Puscifer Are Suited Up in ‘Fake Affront’ Video

Although Tool and Puscifer singer Maynard James Keenan battled with COVID-19 earlier this year, facing lingering symptoms for months, it hasn’t seemed to slow his prolific musical output, which now includes Puscifer’s new video for “Fake Affront.” The song is off the recently digitally released Existential Reckoning album, which was released on Oct. 30, but due to COVID-19 related manufacturing issues, the physical versions arrive on Dec. 11. The video, which premiered on SiriusXM’s Octane website, features performance footage from the band’s Oct. 30 livestream event, “Existential Reckoning: Live at Arcosanti.” A Record Store Day Black Friday exclusive of the 7-inch single features “Apocalyptical” with “Rocket Man” as a b-side. It can be purchased via indie re...

Puscifer Share Enigmatic Video for ‘Theorem’

Puscifer, who dropped their first album in five years, Existential Reckoning, on Oct. 30, have released a video for the song “Theorem,” which offers an update on the search for Pusciverse desert dweller Billy D. It was directed by singer Maynard James Keenan, who recently spoke with SPIN about the album, including how “The new world order of the internet has polarized us to the point where we don’t look at what’s in front of us. We don’t really look up.” In the new “Theorem” video, shot in the middle of the desert — Keenan lives in rural Arizona — a briefcase is recovered from the bottom of a crater. It’s taken to some kind of lab to be examined. Kennan said in a statement: “People ask us ‘What is in the Briefcase?’ ‘Puscifer.’ And what is Puscifer?’ ‘What is Puscifer i...

Puscifer: Court Jesters of the Apocalypse

Feel like the COVID-19 era has been lacking a stone-cold jam to put some rhythm in your step as you nervously pace around your dwelling during self-isolation? Rejoice; after a five-year hiatus, Puscifer—the electro-rock side project of Tool singer Maynard James Keenan— is back with a new album, Existential Reckoning, and a lead single “Apocalyptical,” that’s infectious enough to make you want to dance the blight away and ponderous enough to make your mind work up a sweat while doing so.  Though Existential Reckoning began to take form prior to the pandemic — Keenan notes that the band began “chipping away” at the new material in late 2018 —”Apocalyptical,” in particular, touches on the elephant in the room both coincidentally and otherwise. The track itself marries a weighty, sharp-an...

Puscifer Announce Global Livestream, Existential Reckoning: Live at Arcosanti

Maynard James Keenan’s Puscifer will “take viewers deep into the heart of the Arizona desert” with the Oct. 30 Global Livestream “concert experience” titled Existential Reckoning: Live at Arcosanti. It starts at 6 pm EST/ 3 pm PST and will remain on-demand for 72 hours. Tickets can be purchased here. It ties into the release, that same day, of the band’s fourth full-length album, Existential Reckoning. “If you’re not familiar with Arcosanti, I highly recommend that you look it up,” frontman Maynard James Keenan says of the concert location in a statement. “It’s one of a long list of examples of architects, artists, actors, musicians, writers, and poets. People who are not necessarily from Arizona but came here and found that creative tick that burrows under your sk...

Puscifer Prep New Album Existential Reckoning, Share New Single ‘The Underwhelming’

Way back in May, Puscifer released “Apocalyptical,” the trio’s first new song in five years. Now, there’s an album to coincide with the track and a lot more. Maynard James Keenan, Mat Mitchell and Carina Round unveiled Existential Reckoning, an appropriate new album for these times. The band is working as a group of covert operatives, which will be a theme on the album. Describing the origins of the collection, the band said this in a statement: “In the Summer of 2016, we received a call from Hildy Berger, Billy D’s loving wife. [REDACTED]. Billy D, rumored to have been carrying nothing but a bottle of wine and a mysterious briefcase, had disappeared without a trace somewhere in the high deserts of the Southwestern United States. Rumors of alien abduction were at the forefront through...

Puscifer Share ‘Apocalyptical,’ First New Song in 5 Years

Tool had been rolling along on the road — until the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Once that tour got postponed, singer Maynard James Keenan instead (in all likelihood) figured it was a good time to roll out a new Puscifer song. Titled “Apocalyptical,” which is decidedly fitting for these times, the five-and-a-half-minute tune is synth-driven and the video for it, which you can watch below, is likely inspired by the pandemic. It starts off with a guy skateboarding in a hazmat suit in Los Angeles and kinda just goes off from there. In an interview with Zane Lowe on Beats 1, Keenan explained a bit about the song and how it was made. “Try it again tomorrow or try it again a week from now, but don’t let yourself off the hook. Force it. And then all of a sudden you’ll find when you get past this, it’s ...
