New York Film Festival has announced its 2022 lineup, and one of the most compelling premieres will be Martin Scorsese’s Personality Crisis: One Night Only, his documentary centering around a special 2020 performance by New York Dolls frontman David Johansen. Scorsese co-directed the feature with frequent collaborator David Tedeschi (The 50 Year Argument). They worked with cinematographer Ellen Kuras (American Utopia) to capture Johansen’s January 2020 set at New York City’s Café Carlyle. The show was part of Johansen’s run under his ’80s “hepcat lounge lizard” persona Buster Poindexter. Besides the concert, the documentary features new and archival interviews. “Then and now, David’s music captures the energy and excitement of New York City,” Scorsese said in a previous stat...
When rock and roll evolved from the harmonious sludge of ditties about loving a gal from down the street or how kids wanted to rebel against their parents, The Beatles and Stones pushed our consciousness. Those bands dared us to see the emotional and sonic boundaries via large, orchestrated movements with Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band or the smooth but malicious undertones of Let It Bleed. These two bands broke the mold. They accelerated what the culture and artform were, but even as the Stones dipped their toes in dark water, it was still palatable to the masses, selling millions. Biggy Pop, proto-punk cockatoo son of Iggy Pop and venerable viral sensation, is using his global platform for good. The majestic bird has just been named the “founding patron” of the Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital in Australia. As part of the “gig”, he’ll be promoting the organization and its latest campaign to build the area’s largest mobile wildlife hospital. Such a health center is dire in need at the moment considering the devastating fires that ravaged the country earlier this year. “I’m a bird, and a real wild one, and I have many cockatoo cousins in Australia,” Biggy Pop was “quoted” as saying in an official statement. “I was so distressed to hear that 180 million birds died in the catastrophic bushfire crisis that killed over 3 billion native animals over the Australian summer. That ...
Martin Scorsese and New York Dolls’ David Johansen (photo via Montecruz Foto/Wikipedia) For his next film project, Martin Scorsese is highlighting the life of one of New York City’s esteemed rock icons. Showtime Documentary Films has announced that the legendary filmmaker will be directing a new documentary on New York Dolls frontman David Johansen. According to its official synopsis, the as-yet-untitled film will follow the entire life and career of Johansen: growing up on Staten Island, his time in NYC’s East Village neighborhood during the mid-1960s, and of course fronting the legendary glam-punk band the New York Dolls. However, the film will also explore Johansen’s post-Dolls years; both the ’80s lounge music he made under the pseudonym Buster Poindexter, and the blues records h...
