The 35 Best Albums of the Last 35 Years

Let’s face it: With most “Best Albums” lists, you know the broad strokes of the ranking before you even click. Part of that predictability is understandable: Most iconic records earn their reputation. But these rankings shouldn’t be fossilized, and a shit-ton of amazing LPs have been shoved aside in the pursuit of maintaining the status quo. We didn’t ignore the unimpeachable on our list — you’ll see plenty of the staples you’ve come to expect. But we also hope we’ll spark your curiosity and encourage you to hunt for a title you may have missed over the last 35 years. 35. With love songs, of course. ...

The Most Influential Artists: #2 Prince

As part of our 35th anniversary, we’re naming the most influential artists of the past 35 years. Today, we’re at #2. From Minneapolis, Minnesota, here is Prince. CREDIT: Michael Montfort/Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images Prince Rogers Nelson’s kingdom was a soulful, revolutionary world without boundaries. His lust for sex and sultry guitar licks birthed a sound that has traveled long past his personal expiration date. Every step of the Purple One’s career is worthy of its own book, even though no one could possibly tell his story with the kind of flair that he could. Garnering many aliases over his lifetime, Prince developed into pop’s most enigmatic figure. He emerged unassumingly in 1978 as a perverse, funky virtuoso writing straight from the loins and playing every instrument. Early si...

The 35 Greatest Concerts of the Last 35 Years

We know, we know — the best concert of all-time is your friend’s obscure indie-punk band playing a sweaty neighborhood basement back in ‘94. We admit that one slipped through the cracks.  Maybe it’s a fool’s errand, but this list is our attempt to narrow down three and a half decades of worthy live music events — legendary festivals, headlining tours from major artists, one-off stage collaborations, multimedia spectacles — into an eclectic and satisfying blend. – Ryan Reed 35. So it’s heartening that Heilung’s debut l...

Prince Collaborators Reflect on 1987 Opus ‘Sign o’ the Times’

By the mid-80s, Prince was a global superstar thanks to the worldwide success of 1984’s Purple Rain.  So when he started work on his follow-up — eventually released on March 31, 1987 as the double-LP Sign o’ the Times — it came amidst a creative tsunami that saw two more classic albums with his longtime band the Revolution (1985’s Around The World in A Day and the following year’s Parade), the 1986 film Under The Cherry Moon and three ultimately shelved titles (Dream Factory, Camille and Crystal Ball). For those who worked closest to him during this period, including Revolution keyboard wizard Matt Fink (aka Dr. Fink), longtime engineer Susan Rogers and bassist Levi Seacer, Jr., it was astounding to see such a voluminous output from Prince during this time. “His creativ...

Why APC ‘suspended’ Ekiti governor

The State Executive Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State has suspended Governor Kayode Fayemi. Fayemi was accused of holding meetings and fraternising with PDP members like Femi Fani-Kayode (FFK), Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike. According the statement, Fayemi was suspended due to “his numerous anti-party activities, especially his role in the recently concluded governorship election in Edo State which is contrary to the provisions of Article 21 (A) (ii) of the APC constitution.” The Ekiti chapter of the APC claims that five days before the Edo election, Fayemi hosted FFK in government house Ekiti. “For five days prior to the Edo election, Gov Fayemi hosted PDP big wig Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode in the government house in Ado Ekit...

Edo election: PDP governors vow not to leave Benin amid ‘police intimidation’

File Photo Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have vowed not to leave Edo State amid alleged police intimidation. During an emergency press conference in Abuja on Saturday, the National Chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, accused security agencies of harassing and threatening the lives of its Governors who had gathered in Benin City, the state capital, ahead of Saturday’s poll. This comes amid claims from Akawor Desmond, the party’s chairman in Rivers State, that over 300 policemen laid siege to the hotel where Governor Nyesom Wike was staying. Secondus, expressed shock that, “security agents were detailed to surround the lodging of our governors to harass and intimidate them.” He questioned why APC governors, “including the governor of Kano Sta...

Prince’s Estate Shares Previously Unreleased Song ‘I Need a Man’

We’re less than 10 days away from the release of the massive Sign O’ the Times box set that features over 60 previously unheard songs from Prince’s vault. Whether or not he wanted them released is one thing, but over the past month or so, a bunch of them from this collection have surfaced. The latest from that batch is “I Need a Man.” At just over five-and-a-half minutes, the funked-up, jazzy tune sounds like it could have and should have been at home on Sign O’ the Times. The song was recorded at the Washington Avenue Warehouse on Jan. 22, 1987, months before his Paisley Park Studios would be completed. Fun fact: the song was one of four that Prince offered to Bonnie Raitt. The tune was originally written for Vanity 6 predecessors The Hookers in August 1981, which...

Evicted Prince has rejected a Gofundme account set up by his fans. Like Erica, Nigerians had opened a Gofundme account for the former Housemate to start a salon. But he turned down the campaign, saying he should be the one to bother on how to repay their support. His post reads: “My dear Royal Army, I am overwhelmed and trying to soak in all the love you have been showing me. I’m sincerely speechless because I never expected the love I’m receiving. “This GoFundMe account was brought to my attention last night and I almost tear up by the mere thought and intentions behind it. We are experiencing difficult times now and people still want to do this for me? “No, I think it is time you all rest while I think of what to do to pay you all back for the surreal love. “Sincerely appreciate this ges...
