After early disappointment with the cancelation of its first day, the first Primavera Sound Madrid became a weekend of musical jubilation. Despite Turbulence, the Inaugural Primavera Sound Madrid Soared: Review Jonah Krueger
Primavera Sound’s approach to live music has been nothing if not influential; since its inaugural edition in Barcelona back in 2001, Primavera Sound’s lineups have expanded in size and scope, but have never lost the futuristic, progressive edge that have captivated fans and festival organizers alike. The heavily curated, forward-thinking selections of music represent some of the most exciting artists around, whether it be in the pop universe or the fringes of genres. Twenty years in, Primavera Sound is expanding to the Americas, including three new editions in South America and one Los Angeles festival, which was originally scheduled to mount in 2020 (before the pandemic cancelled both 2020 and 2021’s festivals). Taking place at Los Angeles Historic State Park last weekend (September 16th-...
This past weekend (September 16th-18th), Primavera Sound held its inaugural Los Angeles edition at L.A. State Historic Park. Featuring heavy-hitting headlining sets from Arctic Monkeys, Lorde, and Nine Inch Nails, the weekend proved to be a successful American translation of the iconic festival. Amazing sets didn’t stop at the headliners, though, as the festival’s deep lineup did not disappoint. Notable sets came from acts like Arca, Mitski, Clairo, Fontaines DC, Tierra Whack, and Stereolab, as well as Faye Webster, James Blake, Mayhem, and Squid. Check out actions shots of such artists and more below, courtesy of photographer Debi Del Grande, who was on the ground for Consequence all weekend long. Tiny Fonts is a recurring feature in which our staff handpick the must-see smaller acts at all the major festivals. The American takeover has begun: Primavera Sound, one of Europe’s most esteemed and curated festivals, is moving to Los Angeles this year for the first ever edition of Primavera Sound LA. Taking place from September 16th-18th, Primavera Sound LA is bringing dozens of high profile acts to the west coast, including its outstanding trio of headliners: Arctic Monkeys, Lorde, and Nine Inch Nails. Beyond the top lines, which also include performances from Stereolab, Mitski, Clairo, James Blake, Khruangbin, Fontaines D.C., and King Krule, Primavera Sound LA is a deep lineup all the way through the bottom lines. The festival is certainly boasting a substantial electronic music l...
Lorde has been sprinkling covers into the sets of her Solar Power tour, and kept the tradition going at Barcelona’s Primavera Sound festival Saturday night by debuting a cover of Bananarama’s “Cruel Summer.” The pop star’s rendition of the 1983 hit was pretty true to the original, with the addition of some pretty sweet dance moves. This cover is one of many Lorde has treated fans to in the past few months, including “Run Away With Me” by Carly Rae Jepsen, “The End Has No End” by the Strokes and “HENTAI” by Rosalía. SPIN was in attendance during Primavera Sound’s first weekend. See our coverage here and watch fan-shot footage of Lorde’s Bananarama cover below. 🚨 Lorde’s cover of “Cruel Summer” by Bananarama. pic.twitter.com/fJuIVNqect — Lorde Updates ...
For good reason, the Primavera Sound festival has earned a sterling reputation for curating the best superstar, up-and-coming and cult classic acts in music year after year along the beach in Barcelona. Weekend one of the 2022 edition is in the books, and for this first-timer, the experience has been nothing short of revelatory. Taking place for the first time since 2019, Primavera Sound is the kind of event where you run into legendary rappers backstage and maybe smoke a joint with them, ponder and then refrain from introducing yourself to actor Diego Luna, observe J Mascis and Kim Gordon standing next to each other for 15 minutes without actually talking and then dance until the sun comes up at 6 AM. It’s also an absolutely massive festival, encompassing more than 15 different stages and...
After a member of The Strokes tested positive for COVID-19, the band was forced to postpone its appearance at Primavera Sound this weekend. To help fill the void, Tame Impala covered “Last Nite” during their own headlining set on Friday night. Watch fan-captured footage below. The Strokes were originally set to headline Primavera Sound on Saturday, but were forced to postpone their appearance until next weekend due to “an ongoing positive COVID-19 case in the band.” (The Strokes were also forced to scrap last weekend’s set at Boston Calling; they were replaced by Nine Inch Nails at the last minute.) As of now, The Strokes are set to play Primavera Sound on Saturday, June 10th. They’re also confirmed to play Los Angeles’ This Ain’t No Picnic in September. Advertisement Editor’s Note: Visit ...

Los Angeles is a city for showing up fashionably late, and Primavera Sound is nothing if not fashionable. The beloved Barcelona, Spain festival had hoped to debut an LA counterpart in 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced them to cancel last May. After a brief flirtation with 2021, festival organizers have now settled on September 16th through the 18th of 2022. The good news is that the additional year’s wait comes with an extra date, as the two-day festival expands to a three-day weekend. Primavera Sound LA will take place at the Los Angeles State Historic Park, which has a capacity of about 25,000 people. That’s a big step down from Primavera’s digs in Barcelona, which has hosted over 200,000 people in a year. In other words, the festival will look more like its Portuguese sibling...

Massive Attack, Gorillaz, The Strokes, Tame Impala, and Tyler the Creator will perform at both weekends of the festival. Weekend one will also include Pavement, Beck, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, and The National, while weekend two will feature the return of Lorde (!), plus Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Dua Lipa, and Megan Thee Stallion.
