For anyone who played the original Xbox and PlayStation 2 classic, the long-awaited sequel to 2005’s Psychonauts is easily one of the most anticipated video games to release this month. And as of today, fans will have a better idea of what the latest adventure for Razputin Aquato and the rest of the Psychonauts will sound like on August 25. Composer Peter McConnell and the Double Fine team just released a 6-minute “Psychonauts 2 Musical Tour,” with SPIN getting an exclusive first peek at it. Throughout the video, snippets of McConnell’s score flow from one to the next as images of Psychonauts 2’s various environments and characters set the tone for what to expect. As those who played the first game and/or 2017’s VR exclusive, Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin, may have gues...
If we’re not including their 2019 Christmas album, Llegó Navidad, then it’s been nearly six years since the East Los Angeles legends in Los Lobos released a new album, but that wait is about to come to an end. The iconic rockers are celebrating the 10th anniversary of receiving their Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award by releasing Native Sons tomorrow, July 30 (via New West Records), and SPIN has obtained a first look at the video for the title track, “Native Son.” Filmed in the Lincoln Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles, the video for “Native Son” is an appropriate teaser for the new album, which serves as the veteran band’s love letter to the city they call home. “Native Sons the album and ‘Native Son’ the song and video are our notion of a love letter to the city of our birth...
Around this time last year, just about everyone was blindsided by the COVID pandemic. It’s hard to imagine that a year later, we’re only starting to get better, but that’s where we’re at. Here at SPIN, we decided to make the most of it and put together a livestream called Lullaby Sessions where musician parents would quietly help fans put their kids to be bed by singing quiet songs. One of our first performers was Sara Watkins, who took things to a whole different level. Following her session, Watkins decided to make a new album comprised of quiet, lullaby-type songs. Titled Under The Pepper Tree, it is the Nickel Creek musician’s first solo album in five years and is produced by Tyler Chester. <!– // Brid Player Singles. var _bp = _bp||[]; _bp.push({ “divR...

One of the most important lessons an artist can learn when the world is shut down is how to create a new one. That’s never been a problem for Torii Wolf. Prior to the pandemic, Wolf’s stylistic contortions as a singer-songwriter revolved around blending, burning and rebuilding genres. The Long Island native’s uniquely powerful, rage-filled rasp was the catalyst for Wolf’s breakout collaboration with legendary producer DJ Premier on their moody, trip-hop debut “Flow Riiot” in 2017. It was a launchpad that most new artists dream of, culminating in years of touring the world with ‘Preem while breaking barriers as a non-binary, LGBTQ artist. “It was a moment where I realized that massive shows are not as frightening to me,” Wolf tells SPIN of the three years they spent on the road, inclu...
Last month, Tony Lewis of the Outfield died suddenly at the age of 62. Over the past few years, Lewis had been working on some solo material, and the latest batch was released in the form of a six-song EP that is out now. Titled More Than I Dared, the collection was recorded at Lewis’ home studio in the UK. The title refers to Lewis’ solo career, of which he said at the time was “more than I dared would happen.” The EP serves as a bittersweet farewell to the ’80s pop juggernaut. “On behalf of my girls and myself, I’d like to thank everyone for the outpouring of love, affection and sadness for the loss of our adored Tony,” his wife Carol said in a statement. “Following his debut venture as a solo artist, Tony had been in the studio this year working on ne...
With Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War releasing in less than a month for both current and next-gen consoles (as well as PC, of course), fans are already preparing to drop into the 1980s and return to the beloved Black Ops series. Now, they’ll know what it will sound like when they do it, as Treyarch has just released the game’s main theme song. Created by award-winning composer Jack Wall (Mass Effect, Myst, previous Black Ops games), “Cold War” serves as a reminder of the era in which the game takes place. “I wanted to create something for the main menu that immediately said very clearly ‘Cold War’: Reagan, Brezhnev, Soviet choir,” Wall said. “I wrote a distinctly ‘of the era’ Soviet-sounding theme, mixing Soviet choir and orchestra with dark sy...
Josh Klinghoffer easily could have retreated this year and no one would have blamed him. He was dismissed by the Red Hot Chili Peppers last December and as a solo artist he was slated to open up Pearl Jam’s 2020 arena tour in support of Gigaton. As we know, that was wisely one of the first tours postponed due to the pandemic. Instead of wallowing, Klinghoffer, who releases music under the Pluralone moniker, got creative. He went back to work on his second album (the first was quietly released last November) and put out — in 2020 alone — a series of covers, a seven-inch single that featured current and former Red Hot Chili Peppers Flea and Jack Irons, and now, a new album. I Don’t Feel Well is out this Friday (and an apt album title for 2020) and ahead of the release, Klingho...
For those who can’t wait until tomorrow to hear some more remixed tunes from Final Fantasy XIV, Square Enix has given SPIN access to “‘Neath Dark Waters” a few hours early. Pulse: FINAL FANTASY XIV Remix Album features 14 of the game’s top tracks, all remixed and reimagined in ways as they’ve never been heard before. Considering that the original soundtrack was popular enough to spawn a concert series and significant fanfare, it’s no surprise that the physical pre-orders have long since sold out (although more are coming in a few weeks for those who want to be added to a waiting list). For the digital crowd, the album will also be available on all major streaming platforms at midnight local time. In the meantime, check out this exclusive reveal of “‘Neath Dark Waters” a...
Ehab Omran of Columbus’ South of Eden has long admired Soundgarden and Rage Against the Machine. However, the Jordan-born, Ohio-raised singer only learned about “this crazy band called Audioslave” in 2012. He recalls hearing the group’s song “Show Me How to Live” for the first time while in high school and being flabbergasted by their spirited chemistry. “I fell in love with it instantly,” he recalls. “It’s a very heavy riff, but it grooves at the same time, and that’s why I think Tom Morello is a god for doing all the things he does on the electric guitar. And obviously Chris Cornell is nothing to pass over at all, may he rest in peace.” So when he and South of Eden were looking for a song to cover, the decision was easy. The video for their version of “Show Me How to Love” premieres toda...
