Pixies Cancel U.S. Tour Due to Covid-19 Concerns

As the music industry navigates its rocky return, the alt-rock band Pixies made the decision to scrap its September U.S. tour, fully refunding fans for the tickets. “Regretfully, we announce today that we are canceling our 11-date U.S. September run,” the band said in a statement posted to its social media accounts. “We have determined that with the current surge in Covid cases — made worse by the Delta variant — that this is the right decision for our fans and crew members’ safety, as well as our own.” Covid-19 cases are seeing a major uptick through the U.S., including a rise in breakthrough infections among those vaccinated. A local Cincinnati station recently reported that the Delta variant is driving a surge of infections in the state of Ohio, which would have been a stop on the Pixie...

Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins, Run the Jewels, Faith No More Highlight Riot Fest 2021 Lineup

The festival announcements are rolling in faster than you can say COVID lockdown. Riot Fest, which announced part of its lineup last June, has unveiled the whole thing and it’s a doozy. Nine Inch Nails (who are also headlining Louder Than Life a weekend later) are joining Smashing Pumpkins, Pixies and Run the Jewels at the top of this year’s bill. Originally, My Chemical Romance was slated to headline, but they’re conspicuously absent from the lineup. But have no fear, MCR will be headlining the 2022 edition of Riot Fest. Meanwhile, Mike Patton will perform double duty, performing with Faith No More and Mr. Bungle at the event. Also announced were DEVO, NOFX, Dinosaur Jr., The Ghost Inside, Motion City Soundtrack and many, many more. According to the event’s press release, a...

Nine Inch Nails to Return to Cleveland for Only Shows of 2021

For what appears to be their only scheduled shows for 2021, Nine Inch Nails will be returning to their hometown of Cleveland, Ohio for a pair of concerts on Sept. 21 and 23. The shows obviously mark the band’s first venture back to the city since they were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame last year, and according to a post on their official Instagram, will be “the only NIN headline shows of 2021,” which seems to leave the door open for festival appearances and such. Tickets go on sale on May 14 at 10 am ET, and they’ll be bringing the Pixies along with them. Plus, the venue (Jacobs Pavilion at Nautica) is just a couple of miles from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and right next door to the aquarium, so you can really hit most of what Cleveland has to offer while i...

Pixies Praise Nandi Bushell for ‘Where Is My Mind?’ Cover

English rock and roll prodigy Nandi Bushell continued her trend of creating amazing covers of songs far older than she is on Monday when she shared her take on the Pixies’ classic “Where Is My Mind?” Although the 33-year-old song is over triple Bushell’s age, that didn’t stop the talented multi-instrumentalist from laying down a near-flawless version of it after her recent success with the much more complex “Plug In Baby” by Muse (which earned her a guitar from Matt Bellamy). Check out her version of “Where Is My Mind?” below. [embedded content] On Wednesday, Pixies responded to the video from their official Twitter account, simply telling Bushell it was “Great work.” The response falls somewhere between Bellamy’s gift of a guitar (which Tom Morello had also given to her a while back after...

62 Musicians Predict the 2021 Baseball Season

Somehow, some way, it’s baseball season again. Yes, already. Last year’s abbreviated run saw the Los Angeles Dodgers defeat the Tampa Bay Rays in six games to win their first World Series title in 32 years, something that Ben Gibbard predicted in our 2020 preview. As you can imagine, Dodgers fans — especially the ones below — are in great spirits heading into the 2021 season. So what does that mean about this year? Absolutely nothing. As COVID restrictions start to loosen and with more fans allowed back into stadiums, excitement is beginning to buzz, especially with our group of experts. Like last time, many are hopeful that this will be their team’s year. We searched far and wide to get predictions for the upcoming Major League Baseball season, creating a proper barometer of what these su...

27 Musicians Predict the 2020-21 NBA Season

If it feels like the most-recent NBA season just ended, well, it did. The strangeness of 2020 engulfed the association, but it led to one of the more innovative ideas of the COVID-era: the bubble. (Mostly) quarantined, teams competed with nary a hitch at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex near Orlando. The season ended in the fall instead of its customary June, but nevertheless, the NBA is back on Dec. 22. As usual, we enlisted our expert musician panel to preview what’s shaping up to be yet another unpredictable NBA season. Mark Lanegan Los Angeles Clippers CREDIT: Travis Keller What’s your prognosis for the season? Will they ever get over the hump?At this point, I’m slightly jaded as far as the Clips are concerned. I always go into the season optimistic and the same when they hit...

28 Musicians Predict the 2020 Baseball Season

Against all odds and the advice of many virologists, the 2020 MLB season is finally underway. Whether that’s a good idea in the midst of a pandemic is beside the point because it’s happening. Baseball is back, albeit in a much stranger fashion than anyone could have imagined when spring training began in February (which may as well have been 1923).  With a 60-game season looming and a bunch of bizarre rule changes in effect (universal DH, runner starting on second base in extra innings, expanded rosters, and more playoff teams), the season is set to be the most unpredictable in years. You know who else is stoked about the season finally starting? Musicians. There’s always been a romanticism between artists and baseball that makes perfect sense. Thus, we’ve summoned a panel of baseball...

My Chemical Romance, Smashing Pumpkins, Run the Jewels and Pixies are among the highlights of the first wave lineup for Riot Fest 2021. Yes, you read correctly.
