Kevin Parker Is All of Tame Impala in “Why Won’t They Talk to Me?” Performance Video: Watch

Because of the size and sound of the project, it’s easy to think of Tame Impala as a full band. But really, all of that music stems from the “group’s” mastermind, Kevin Parker. The Australian artist reminds us of this in a new performance video for the Lonerism cut “Why Won’t They Talk to Me?” Filmed for the Adobe MAX creative conference by frequent collaborator Alex Haygarth, the clip finds Parker playing every instrument and even singing backup vocals — all three harmonies. Haygarth shot the thing in an empty floor space, with Parker setting up different instruments in different sections of the room. Using some nifty editing techniques, it ends up looking like the musician really cloned himself to fill out all of Tame Impala’s ranks. Check out the creative performance below. Editors̵...

Tame Impala Perform “Elephant”, “Is It True” in an Empty Soccer Stadium: Watch

After months of live music lockdown, artists are finally stepping outside of their homes and returning to venues. HAIM just played at The Forum, and Trey Anastasio has a Beacon Theatre residency coming up. Sure, HAIM’s performance took place in The Forum’s parking lot and Anastasio’s virtual residency will be audience-free, but the point is the venues aren’t vacant anymore. Now, Tame Impala have joined their ranks and staged their own physical performance in the outside world, as they recently took over a soccer stadium for a two-song set. Kevin Parker and his pared down three-piece version of Tame Impala set up in the center of the pitch at HBF Park in Perth, Australia. They delivered the Lonerism favorite “Elephant” and “Is It True” off their latest full-length, Febru...

Brandi Carlile’s Cover of Tears for Fears’ “Mad World” Sums Up 2020: Watch

“I find it hard to tell you, `cause I find it hard to take/ When people run in circles, it’s a very very/ Mad world.” Yup, that sounds like 2020 alright, though it’s actually part of the enduring hook from Tears for Fears’ 1983 track “Mad World”. Turning the new wave classic into a stirring piano ballad is nothing new, but when Brandi Carlile delivered her rendition during a recent livestream, it felt more devastatingly relatable than ever. Carlile has often pulled out the song during concerts, but gave it a special weightiness during this latest virtual performance. She tucked it into the end of a full-album performance of her 2009 LP Give Up the Ghost on Sunday night. Accompanied by cellist Josh Neumann, Carlile played the haunting piano hymn and sang almost every note with an achingly d...

BTS Perform TV Debut of “Dynamite” at 2020 MTV VMAs: Watch

BTS continued their world domination tonight at the 2020 MTV VMAs, where they delivered the live TV debut of their new English-language single “Dynamite”. The appearance also marked the beloved K-pop boyband’s first-ever VMAs performance. This year’s awards ceremony was originally supposed to take place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. However, due to the ongoing pandemic, the evening’s performances were filmed remotely. In the case of BTS, they broadcasted all the way from South Korea. However, thanks to the power of green screen technology, they were able to incorporate iconic New York City locations into the background, such as Times Square and the famed cobblestoned area of DUMBO. As with everything BTS-related, their performance was a flashy extravaganza from start to finish, highl...

Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande Perform “Rain on Me” at 2020 MTV VMAs: Watch

Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande poured it on at the 2020 MTV VMAs with a stirring rendition of their smash hit “Rain on Me”. When it comes to pop collaborations, some big-name blockbusters are all thunder and no lighting. Not so with “Rain on Me”; this Chromatica standout lights up the dance floor with electrifying hook after electrifying hook. The pair’s moves Sunday night were nothing to mess with either; Gaga, while in a bondage-like outfit, strutted across a stage made to look like an otherworldly planet. Grande, meanwhile, twirled effortlessly in enormous white heels. In addition to “Rain on Me”, the MTV VMAs Artist of the Year also performed “911” and “Stupid Love”. For the latter single, Gaga kicked things off by playing a piano shaped like a brain (really!), before stepping into a gree...

Ben Gibbard Fulfills Destiny, Dedicates Postal Service Song to the Postal Service: Watch

After Republican fundraiser Louis DeJoy took over as Postmaster General on June 16th, 2020, he enacted a series of cost-cutting measures that could potentially interfere with the election. The issue of whether we should fund mail services has become politicized, and it’s no surprise that Ben Gibbard has come down on the side of “pro-mail.” The frontman for Death Cab for Cutie once wrote music under the moniker The Postal Service. Now, 17 years after the indie classic Give Up, Gibbard has fulfilled his destiny, and played “Such Great Heights” by The Postal Service in an attempt to save the Postal Service. Gibbard shared the performance in a video titled “#TeamJoeSings”, which is also the name of an initiative he’s launching for the Democratic National Convention. The two-song set is an...

NPR Unlocks 9:30 Club Archive Featuring Over 100 Live Performances

From 2005 until 2017, NPR broadcast live performances from the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC. Now, in celebration of the venue’s 40th anniversary, that archive of over 100 performances is available for your streaming pleasure through NPR’s website. The fine folks at National Public Radio have put a tremendous amount of effort into this archive. Each individual concert has been published with its original write-up. Remember a time when “Conor Oberst has been called the voice of his generation”? Us neither, but apparently that happened when he was 24-years-old. In that sense, this isn’t just an abundance of fine performances, it’s also a collection of music criticism — sometimes hyperbolic, but always earnest — by hardworking people who love music. From the first concert by Bright Eyes in...

Ezra Koenig Performs Vampire Weekend Medley on Fallon from Quarantine: Watch

This past weekend marked the one-year anniversary of Father of the Bride, the stellar fourth album from Vampire Weekend. In celebration, frontman Ezra Koenig delivered a quarantine-style medley of the album’s songs on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday. Shot from his own spacious home studio, Koenig performed solo piano renditions of standout tracks “Flower Moon”, “Stranger”, and “Big Blue”. The album versions of these three songs benefited from robust instrumentation, but Koenig proved they sound just as lovely and clever when stripped bare. Watch video of the Fallon medley below. Editors’ Picks Prior to lockdown, Vampire Weekend shared three FOTB bonus tracks, as well as campaigned hard for former presidential candidate Bernie Sanders. Earlie...
