Pearl Jam Play ‘Dance of the Clairvoyants’ in First Performance of 2020

Though they’ve been hit hard by COVID-19 on many levels, Pearl Jam played their first “show” as a band (Eddie Vedder performed solo at One World Together and at Jack Johnson’s streaming event) since the release of Gigaton. Though it took a while to get to this point, Pearl Jam performed Gigaton’s first single “Dance of the Clairvoyants” for the first time at the All in Wa COVID-19 fundraiser. Of course, the performance was recorded from their respective homes. They were the last band to perform on the night at the 1:06:29 point of the show. The song featured Stone Gossard on bass, Jeff Ament on guitar and keys and a special appearance by former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, who was supposed to join the band on tour this spring. Vedder’s wife and kids made...

Pearl Jam, Ben Gibbard, Brandi Carlile, Dave Matthews to Play Virtual Relief Concert

Seattle’s best are about to come together for something massive. And no, we’re not talking about the ’95-96 SuperSonics. Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews, Brandi Carlile and Macklemore are some of the biggest names behind All In WA’s newly announced virtual COVID-19 relief concert. It airs on June 10. The show — also featuring Ciara and Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll, Allen Stone, Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard and others — will be streamed on Twitch via Amazon Music’s channel, as well as on local Seattle television stations KING 5 and KONG at 7 pm PST. The money raised through the broadcast will be put toward several local organizations working on youth homelessness, food security and other issues. All In WA has already raised $20 million of its $...

The 30 Best Albums of 2020 (So Far)

On one hand, who can think about stuff as trivial as this? On the other, what else is there to do? If art was made to fill a cultural vacuum, well… now’s the fucking time, buddy. Hopefully, you’ve been binging every show, reading every book, repainting every bathroom you’ve been putting off. Hopefully, when (and if) we make it out of quarantine alive, we’ll be able to look forward to better things. For now, we still have music. Some of the great albums and EPs below demand your full and undivided attention. Some of them demand to intensify your workout or gaming session. Mostly they just sound good, and you should pair them with whatever activities music enhances for you. Even sleep; lord knows that could be improved upon. Others will keep you wide awake. If any of these albums make you th...

Pearl Jam Producer Josh Evans on the Making of Gigaton

For Josh Evans, producing Pearl Jam’s Gigaton was the culmination of a long run with the band. Starting out as a studio assistant fetching coffee in 2004, Evans has been with Pearl Jam for more than half of their career. Thus, as his position grew within the band ranks, they entrusted him to oversee the building a custom studio in their Seattle headquarters that was operational at the beginning of 2017. Though Pearl Jam had been working on new material since the release of Lightning Bolt in 2013 (on which Evans was a guitar tech) and around subsequent tours in between, the timing for the opening of their studio lined up for when Pearl Jam was ready to record. Not, though, until the studio space was ready. Evans was busy wiring and finishing up ensuring that the studio w...

Pearl Jam’s ‘Retrograde’ Video Shows End of the World and Features Greta Thunberg

Pearl Jam’s Gigaton was released in March and it’s safe to say, things have not gone according to plan since. But the good news: they shared a new video for their latest single, “Retrograde.” For the animated clip, the band teamed up with director Josh Wakely, it opens with a lone traveler driving through the rain and descending upon a strip mall. Visiting a psychic (in a shopping center conveniently with a bunch of the band’s album titles on the storefronts), the protagonist watches world destruction through a crystal ball as the melting glaciers and sea overtake iconic landmarks like Eiffel Tower in Paris, London Bridge in London and cities like New York and Seattle (think like Day After Tomorrow or 2012).  Tarot cards of the band appear and there’s an ...
