Top Performances is a recurring feature in which we definitively handpick the very best performances from an iconic actor or actress. This article was originally published in 2015. We meet again, Miss Moore. Congratulations are in order for Julianne Moore. On Sunday night, she won a well-deserved, and long-hoped-for Oscar for Still Alice. She brought infinite grace, humanity, and incredibly affable qualities to a person stuck in a dire situation, and Moore walked away from the movie with Best Actress at the Oscars, for what might be remembered as her seminal role — not to mention one of the surest bets in recent Oscar history. But is it Moore’s best? Moore’s had an exhaustively diverse career, with one uniting quality: She’s really, really good in everything she’s in, and everybody l...
25 years ago, Boogie Nights arrived in theaters, introducing audiences to a promising-turned-renowned filmmaker (Paul Thomas Anderson) and showcasing a fantastic ensemble of young breakout performers (Mark Wahlberg, John C. Reilly, Philip Seymour Hoffman), rising character actors (Don Cheadle, William H. Macy, Julianne Moore) and Hollywood veterans (Burt Reynolds, Philip Baker Hall) in an endlessly entertaining depiction of the Golden Age of Porn. Laced with colorful period detail and a vibrant wall-to-wall soundtrack of pop, disco, and Motown, Anderson’s sun-soaked chronicle of the San Fernando Valley in the late 1970s illustrated a seemingly halcyon time in American culture. As the film’s trailer posits, it was an era when “sex was safe, pleasure was a business, and business was booming....
We know this might come as a complete and utter shock, but HAIM have once again teamed up with Paul Thomas Anderson. This time, the Licorice Pizza director has helmed the music video for the indie pop band’s new song, “Lost Track.” Like Licorice Pizza, the “Lost Track” music video takes place in the San Fernando Valley of yesteryear. But while the coming-of-age drama was set in the ’70s, this clip imagines Este, Danielle, and Alana Haim as members of a preppy and posh ladies society in the ’50s. Shot on location in Southern California as part of HAIM’s recent cover shoot with W Magazine, the video looks just as good as it sounds. Sonically, “Lost Track” might feel as carefree as a day at the country club, but its lyrics center around melancholia. “I’ll never get back what I ...
Get ready to devour some Licorice Pizza: The original soundtrack to Paul Thomas Anderson’s new coming-of-age film has arrived today via Republic. Stream it below via Apple Music or Spotify. Boasting an impressive roster including Sonny & Cher, David Bowie, and more, the Licorice Pizza soundtrack acts as a time machine to the movie’s ’70s SoCal setting. Of course, there’s also one contemporary contribution from Anderson’s frequent collaborator, Johnny Greenwood. Beloved highlights from the Licorice Pizza soundtrack include The Doors’ “Peace Frog,” Taj Mahal’s “Tomorrow May Not Be Your Day,” and Nina Simone’s “July Tree.” At 20 tracks total, there’s plenty to immerse yourself in the film’s setting. Greenwood’s song is appropriately titled “Licorice Pizza,” and marks the fifth t...
As if casting a HAIM sister wasn’t enough for Paul Thomas Anderson to pique the interest of music nerds with Licorice Pizza, its soundtrack is one for the books: Republic Records has unveiled the tracklist for the coming-of-age film’s original motion picture soundtrack, which features David Bowie, Paul McCartney, Nina Simone, and many more. The album will be released November 26th before the film hits theaters nationwide Christmas Day. Considering Licorice Pizza takes place in the 1970s, it’s only fitting that the soundtrack pulls straight from that era, featuring the likes of Sonny & Cher, Taj Mahal, and The Doors, as well as some more overlooked highlights from that decade. To the surprise of absolutely nobody, Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood — who’s scored numerous f...
Paul Thomas Anderson has kept details of his latest film under wraps, only revealing that it was 1970s-era coming-of-age film and would feature Alana Haim (of HAIM fame), Cooper Hoffman (the son of late actor Philip Seymour Hoffman), and Bradley Cooper. Now, the acclaimed director has finally revealed the film’s title — Licorice Pizza — as well as the first trailer. Based on the two-and-a-half minute teaser, Haim and Hoffman are clearly the lead players in the film. The plot seems to revolve around Hoffman’s character, a high school student and aspiring actor, and his relationship with Haim. It’s all set in San Fernando Valley during the 1970s, which immediately calls to mind Anderson’s classic film Boogie Nights. Appropriately, the trailer for Licorice Pizza — which takes its name from a ...
