Patty Smyth Performs With John McEnroe and Friends on Lullaby Sessions

Patty Smyth’s first new album of original solo material in 28 years is out now. Recently, we swung by Smyth’s rehearsal space and shot a four-song set for our ongoing Lullaby Sessions series. Featured in the set are Bob Thiele Jr. and Smyth’s husband who you may recognize: former tennis superstar and current broadcaster John McEnroe. Everyone’s in good spirits and they should be: it captures the laidback ethos of what the sessions stand for. Check it out below. In our conversation, Smyth spoke about penning the theme song for the now-departed Netflix show G.L.O.W., her band Scandal’s start in the Lower East Side scene and who was her favorite singer from the grunge era. Patty Smyth Reflects on Life and Love on ‘Build a Fire’

Patty Smyth is releasing her first album of original material in a few months. Previously, she’s shared “Drive” from that upcoming collection and today, she dropped “Build a Fire,” a song that’s an ode to her 25-year relationship with tennis legend John McEnroe. “John and I have been together almost 25 years,” Smyth said in a statement. “I’m surprised we still have this chemistry going. It’s the first time in 28 years that the Scandal singer is putting out solo material. But that doesn’t mean she’s been dormant. Her song, “The Warrior,” is the theme for the Netflix series G.L.O.W. “Because I didn’t wr...

Patty Smyth Talks Doing the Theme Song for a Show She’s Never Watched

There isn’t anything quite like hearing a radio hit from one’s youth revamped as the theme to a hit TV show. Yet that is what so many folks of a certain age have collectively experienced upon binge-watching three seasons (and hopefully counting) of the acclaimed Netflix series G.L.O.W. And no better tune has inspired Americans to forgo the “Skip Intro” button than Scandal’s anthemic 1986 hit “The Warrior,” whose infectious riff immediately gets you into the mood for some meta-comedy about a meta-sport. “Yeah, it’s always fun singing that line,” laughs singer Patty Smyth about the most well-known single from her time as the powerhouse frontwoman of the New York-based hard rock group who first hit the scene with their 1982 single “Goodbye to You,” the natural bridge between Blondie and ...
