BTS, BoA, NCT, Seventeen and Twice are just a few among many K-pop stars who performed this year and pushed the show’s immersive production to its fullest. BTS in particular made use of AR and spectacular 3D effects throughout the group’s set, even bringing in SUGA, a band member who’s currently recovering from surgery on a shoulder injury, to perform with them as a hologram in “Life Goes On.” The effect was made possible by a volumetric display, which records an object or place in 360-degrees and builds an interactive 3D avatar that can be viewed from any direction without special glasses or headsets. And BTS weren’t the only ones pushing the limits of tech: Treasure combined a robot arm with a laser system, presented a new kind of performance, and Twice performed on a virtual XR studio s...
An Ethiopian spokesman on Tuesday said that the country’s forces fired on a UN team, claiming they ignored instructions and drove through government checkpoints in the northern region of Tigray. The shooting came as the UN and aid agencies are continuing to seek access to northern Ethiopia, more than a week after fighting there was declared over on November 28. “Some of the UN staff were actually detained and some were shot at,” said Redwan Hussein. “They broke two checkpoints to drive to areas where they were not supposed to go, and that they were told not to go. When they were about to break the third one, they were shot at and detained.” Speaking at a press conference in the capital Addis Ababa, Redwan insisted the UN staffers were to blame for Sunday’s incident close to the town of Shi...

Ethiopia and the United Nations reached an agreement on Wednesday to channel desperately needed humanitarian aid to a northern region where a month of war has killed, wounded and uprooted large numbers of people. The pact, announced by U.N. officials, will allow aid workers access to government-controlled areas of Tigray, where federal troops have been battling the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) and captured the regional capital. The war is believed to have killed thousands, sent 45,000 refugees into Sudan, displaced many more within Tigray, and worsened suffering in a region where 600,000 people were already dependent on food aid even before the flare-up from Nov. 4. Aid agencies had sounded the alarm about a growing humanitarian crisis and been pressing for access, after hundred...
Artist Mentioned “When I was nine years old, I told my mom, ‘I’m going to be an artist, let’s do this,’” Snoh Aalegra laughs. Her mother picked up the phone book and started making calls. Without any demos or recordings to share, she landed a meeting with a studio executive who gave her young daughter a chance to sing for him. That eventually led to a development deal with Sony ATV in Sweden for the hopeful 13-year-old. At the time the family lived in Enköping and a young Aalegra had to travel 45 minutes to Stockholm after school and on the weekends to attend recording sessions. She looks back on those years fondly, remembering train rides as a time to sit quietly with her thoughts. In the first of two new exclusive performances, Aalegra returns to that familiar train setting w...
The European Union has struck a deal to initially pay less for Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine candidate than the United States, an EU official told Reuters News Agency as the bloc announced on Wednesday it had secured an agreement for up to 300 million doses. The experimental drug, developed in conjunction with Germany’s BioNTech, is the frontrunner in a global race to produce a vaccine, with interim data released on Monday showing it was more than 90 percent effective at protecting people from COVID-19 in a large-scale clinical trial. Under the EU deal, 27 European countries could buy 200 million doses, and have an option to buy another 100 million. The bloc will pay less than $19.50 per jab, a senior EU official involved in talks with vaccine makers told Reuters, adding that partly reflected ...
Last summer, Taylor Bennett played something like 30 shows, including many of America’s biggest festivals. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, summer 2020 has obviously been very different. That’s one reason the Chicago rapper and singer was so excited to perform Thursday (Sept. 3) as part of Billboard’s Live At-Home concert series. Presented by Mercedes-Benz, the midday livestream enabled Bennett to connect with fans for 30 minutes and — just as importantly — raise money for the charity of his choice. Bennett selected Lost-n-Found Youth, a nonprofit that supports homeless LGBTQ youth in Atlanta. “Lost-n-Found is an amazing organization,” said Bennett, who has a long history of working on behalf of both homeless youth and the LGTBQ community. “Shoutout to them and everything they’re ...
In celebration of Pride Month and Global Pride Day, Hayley Kiyoko joined Billboard Live At-Home to perform some of her biggest hits for her fans at home. “I love June and I love that we have a Pride month,” Kiyoko said. “I really encourage you all to practice your pride on a daily basis, and the more you do that the more you’ll believe it.” Before jumping into her set, Kiyoko encouraged fans to donate to The Bail Project. “While we are celebrating the LGBTQ+ community it’s so important to show our support in the fight for racial justice,” Kiyoko said. The singer, songwriter and LGBTQ+ icon kicked off her performance with a fresh rendition of “What I Need,” a breakout track from her debut studio album, Expectations, originally featuring Kehlani. “That was a vibe,” Kiyoko exclaimed after the...
