Guitarist Mark Tremonti, bassist Brian Marshall, and drummer Scott Phillips have experienced tumultuous ups and downs as three-quarters of Creed. When the trio formed a new band with singer Myles Kennedy in 2004, Alter Bridge’s creative chemistry was instantaneous. Over the past 18 years, Kennedy has established himself as one of the most respected hard rock singers of his generation, and Tremonti’s gift for instantly memorable riffs has continued to yield rock radio staples like “Isolation” and “Rise Today.” On Oct. 14, Napalm Records is releasing Alter Bridge’s seventh studio album Pawns & Kings. The album’s lead single “Silver Tongue” recently became the band’s 16th hit on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock chart, pulling ahead of Creed’s 14 hits on the chart. [embedded content][embedded c...
For decades, Sammy Hagar’s raspy, soulful voice has been one of the most recognizable sounds in hard rock, from his early hits as a member of Montrose and a solo artist to his multi-platinum run as Van Halen’s frontman in the ‘80s and ‘90s. In recent decades, he’s built a successful brand out of his love of good drinks and good times. Santo is Sammy Hagar’s joint venture with his longtime friend celebrity chef Guy Fieri, who is widely known for making the most of life and not taking himself too seriously. Here’s a look back at some of the greatest songs from Hagar’s five decades of music, alongside recommendations of complementary cocktails featuring Santo Mezquila or Tequila. When ~Pourri founder and CEO Suzy Batiz conjured up the idea of a soundtracked campaign to promote the company’s non-toxic odor eliminators, she knew the song had to be funky, original, and a party-starter. So, the Texas-based founder called on the sultriest soul strutters from the Lone Star State she knew to craft “Funk Check!,” which will be hitting streaming services on Oct. 27. “When I came across Joshua [Markiet] and the Ghetto Funk Collective dancing in the 70’s era ‘locking-style’ on my social feed to a Rick James song, a spark lit up inside me! I thought, ‘what better way to show the world how we’re transforming every stinky moment by flipping the funk on odor than through funk music and dancing?!’” Alongside executive producer Paul Levatino, Batiz assembled an all-star cast to cre...
Over eight albums and two live records, Talking Heads charted an unlikely course — moving from a tiny punk club in New York City’s East Village to the pop charts and even movie stardom. David Byrne, Chris Frantz, Tina Weymouth, and Jerry Harrison put their unique spin on the traditional rock quartet, pulling soul music, Afrobeat, hip-hop, Krautrock, and other influences into their herky-jerky grooves. Along the way, they helped to invent what we now call “alternative rock” about as much as any band. Talking Heads officially ended 30 years ago this year. The breakup was contentious: In 1996, Byrne sued his former bandmates, attempting to stop them from performing under the name The Heads. The group has only reunited once, to play four songs at their 2002 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction...
We all love music, and we all love the beach… so why not combine the two for an awesome weekend of sun, sand and sound at the BeachLife Ranch Country & Americana Festival? The inaugural fest, taking place September 16-18 in Redondo Beach, California, has a stated mission of inspiring community, authenticity and generosity through the celebration of music, art and the Southern California beachlife culture. Which sounds pretty great to us. The artists on board to join the celebration are absolutely stellar, too. The first-night festivities will kick off with headlining sets from Colorado folk-rock superstars the Lumineers – who will be unfurling the Americana jams from their extensive catalog as well as their brand-new release, Brightside – as well as pop and blue-eyed soul legends Daryl...
Can’t make the show? Then the next best way to hear your favorite artists is through a Syng speaker. We saw – or rather, heard – this firsthand. During a recent stop by Syng’s (pronounced: sing) headquarters in Venice Beach, SPIN wanted to put the company’s trademark speaker – officially dubbed the Cell Alpha – to the test. And the best way to do that? By blasting Dillinger Escape Plan, obviously. Sonically, the speakers lived up to the challenge. About 20 seconds into “Milk Lizard,” it felt as if the disbanded metal band was putting on a reunion show in your living room; the drums snapped crisply and with precision, the bass rumbled with the force of an Eliminator motorboat engine, and Ben Weinman’s guitar sliced through the room like a fork through flan. The only thing missing was having...
COVID be damned, welcome to peak season for music festival rats. I’m one of them and have attended scores of festivals around the world. But I’ve never done “the camping thing,” and it was time for that to change. After all, like so many others during the pandemic, and inspired by the much hash-tagged romantic scenic pictures from others that filled our Instagram feeds, we bought a Mercedes Sprinter van (complete with a kitchenette, bathroom, full bed) to find some time to exit the bubble of our homes. So my wife, Luisa, and I scored some tickets to the BottleRock Festival in the heart of Napa, California, and wine country, packed up our van and drove up from San Diego for the 500-mile journey. No expensive flights or hotel rooms this time. Just anticipating the much-heralded van life that...
Rock bands come in all shapes and sizes. This much we know. But, As You Were are way different than any other band on the planet. Why? Outside of face-melting solos and infectious grooves, every member of the band is an active duty soldier in the United States Army. In this Artist Introspective, As You Were breaks down how they’re changing perceptions about the intersection of artistry and the military, showing how the US Army is more than just about fighting. Performing in As You Were has allowed its members to grow as musicians and as people, and they’re here to tell you their unique story on how they’re able to pursue their dreams and how other opportunities exist in the Army. $bp(“Brid_53339725”, {“id”:”24448″,”width”:”16″,...

Nirvana, one of the most famous bands to come out of Seattle’s grunge scene, had a lasting impact on music that can be felt today. And whether you followed their trajectory or you’re a newer fan, you can own a piece of the band’s history: a custom-framed Nirvana In Utero CD signed by its members, the late singer Kurt Cobain, drummer Dave Grohl, and bassist Krist Novoselic. In 2014, Atina Brown and John Swilley met at a recording session. Swilley was already in a band while Brown was a curious spectator who initiated the symposium. They recorded a song together that night and, as they say, the rest was history. Today, they’re the two parts that make up the Atlanta-based band Mattiel (which is also Atina’s middle name). Brown is on vocals while Swilley mans drums, guitar, and much of the other production elements. Before their most recent album, Georgia Gothic (released on March 18 of this year), the duo put out two records (Mattiel [2017] and Satis Factory [2019]), both remotely composed with Brown and Swilley in entirely separate locations. Georgia Gothic, however, was done a little differently as the twosome confined themselves to a secluded cabin in Georgi...
