First, let’s take care of the obvious. Despite the still-persistent narrative that such music is “dead,” there are way more than 50 excellent rock bands out there. And there’s no exact science to scooping the cream of the crop. Our list includes arena-packing veterans but also semi-obscure indie acts who’ve barely escaped their basements. There are no hard rules here. Our methodology was simple: ask our writers and staff which rock bands feel worthy of recognition right now. But we did aim for a wide scope — throughout, you’ll find flavors of psych, post-punk, hardcore, metal, even country. If it feels like rock, it’s on the table. Consider SPIN‘s 2021 roundup — just like last year’s — a thermometer, taking the temperature of modern rock in all its various mutations. Altın Gün Ho...
Parquet Courts channel the Animals as a punk band on their new song “Homo Sapien.” [embedded content][embedded content] Off their upcoming Sympathy for Life, out October 22, “Homo Sapien” shoots off like a bullet, as lead singer Andrew Savage gives a near monotone, humor-filled rant on human evolution. “The spice we died to trade / The gun that we used to say / Stand straight up and down / Speaking intelligently.” The video features bassist Sean Yeaton looking like a Founding Father in a powdered wig and an embroidered suit. Today, the band is presenting Feel Free: Sympathy for Life, Visualized, a one-night livestream featuring the upcoming record’s 11 tracks along with 11 visual art pieces from around the world. The ticketed event will allow viewers to experience the album as a film, and ...
After teasing some new material earlier this year, Parquet Courts are officially back. The group announced their first album in three years, Sympathy for Life, which they say is inspired by New York clubs, Primal Scream and Pink Floyd. “Most of the songs were created by taking long improvisations and moulding them through our own editing,” co-frontman Austin Brown said in a statement. “The biggest asset we have as artists is the band. After 10 years together, our greatest instrument is each other. The purest expression of Parquet Courts is when we are improvising. “Sympathy For Life is influenced by the party itself,” he added. You can hear the first officially released song, “Walking at a Downtown Pace,” and watch a video directed by Daniel Arnold. Co-frontman A Savage says the clip ...
