Paramore Unveil Title Track From Comeback Album This Is Why

As expected, Paramore has released its first new song in five years, “This Is Why.” As it turns out, “This Is Why” will double as the title track from the band’s comeback album, which will be released on Feb. 10 by Atlantic Records. The 10-track project reunites Paramore with longtime collaborator Carlos de la Garza. “This Is Why” begins with a jazzy, bass-driven verse, as Hayley Williams instructs, “If you have an opinion / maybe you should shove it / or maybe you could scream it / might be best to keep it to yourself.” The song’s chorus ratchets up the intensity, with jagged guitar lines reminiscent of early 2000s indie standard-bearers such as Franz Ferdinand and Interpol. Further interesting guitar textures can be heard during the bridge, as Williams sings of “floating like a cannonbal...

The cover art for “This Is Why” appears to show group members Hayley Williams, Taylor York and Zac Farro pressing their faces against a fogged-up window. Paramore’s fall tour begins Oct. 2 in Bakersfield, Calif., and wraps Nov. 19 at the Corona Capital festival in Mexico City. It also includes appearances at the Austin City Limits and When We Were Young festivals. The Williams-led band hasn’t released a new album since 2017’s After Laughter. Williams’ most recent solo release was 2021’s Flowers for Vases / Descansos. “This Is Wh...

The 40 Best Emo Love Songs

While emo music might be most associated with sadness and heartbreak, those lovelorn artists couldn’t have written such songs without experiencing some serious romantic highs. Since it’s Valentine’s Day, we wanted to focus on the good parts of love more than the bad — although there’s still some unhappiness and resentment mixed in. (I mean, it is still emo after all.) SPIN’s writers spanned decades, waves and numerous albums looking for the top emo love songs, and now we’ve gathered them all here to save you the work. And yes, we know “emo” is just as broad a term as “love song” — you may also describe some of these acts as pop-punk or post-hardcore or even heart-on-sleeve indie-rock. But all of these bangers branch off the same family tree. From trailblazers like The Get Up Kids...

Hayley Williams Shares Cover of Broadcast’s ‘Colour Me In’

Hayley Williams has shared her cover of Broadcast’s “Colour Me In.” The track was previously released for 24 hours on voter registration compilation Good Music To Avert The Collapse Of American Democracy: a 40-track album featuring previously-unreleased recordings by everyone from R.E.M. to Phoebe Bridgers to Death Cab For Cutie, and many more. “I really love Broadcast. It was hard to choose which song of theirs I wanted to cover,” says Hayley, “but I feel like this one hits me in a sweet spot that’s strangely comforted by longing and melancholy. I recorded this days before lockdown last year and it’s just been floating around in the ether. So happy it’s got a place to land now. Enjoy.” Listen to her take on “Colour Me In” below. The 50 Best Alt-Rock Love Songs

Not all love songs are romantic. Not all love songs are even happy. It all depends on your definition of the term. For every “My Girl” or “Your Song,” there’s at least one track with a nuanced take on the darker, more complicated sides of love — the drama of a long-term relationship, the fear of losing a partner, the void left in love’s wake. Many of those songs fall under the admittedly broad umbrella of “alt-rock.” So to mark Valentine’s Day, we decided to gather 50 of our favorite “love songs” in the genre — both conventional and otherwise. Throughout this list, you’ll find lines about blooming romance and marital bliss. You’ll also find nods to drug addiction and car crashes. There’s something for everyone. – Ryan Reed 50. that dog. – “I’m Gonna See You” You take the good, you tak...

Hayley Williams Personally Delivers New Song ‘My Limb’ to a Fan’s House

It wasn’t just an ordinary evening stroll with her dog. Under a “wolf moon,” Hayley Williams snuck up to superfan Carly Butler’s Nashville home and slipped the unreleased song “My Limb” into her mailbox — and gave Butler permission to “leak” it. The gobsmacked fan of the Paramore singer tweeted, “Did Hayley Williams drive to your house and drop off a candle and a CD with her new song on it or are you having a normal night.” Williams chronicled the delivery on Instagram Stories video, joking that “Murder Postmates” was her new service. “Okay, we’re going to drop off a Sanctuary candle and a burnt copy of one of the songs to Carly in Nashville right now. I hope she doesn’t think I’m coming to murder her if she looks out her window at just the right time. Or I hope she does, I don’t know...

Hayley Williams Shares Acoustic Version of ‘Simmer’ From Upcoming EP

Hayley Williams has a new EP, Petals for Armor: Self-Serenades, arriving on Dec. 18. From that intimate three-song collection, Williams has shared a poignant, stripped-down version of “Simmer.” Her acoustic vocals-and-guitar take was reworked from the version on Petals for Armor, her self-titled debut, which dropped May 8 and is one of our best albums of the year. In addition to “Simmer,” Self-Serenades also features the unreleased “Find Me Here” and “Why We Ever” from Petals for Armor. Of ‘”Simmer,” “If you listen closely, you can hear Alf [Hayley’s dog] sigh dramatically in the opening line. Like mother, like son,” Williams wrote on Twitter. Check out the tune below. Pop-Punk and Hip-Hop: 2020’s Dynamic Duo

In October, Bad Boy Records’ Machine Gun Kelly topped the Billboard 200 for the first time with his fifth album, Tickets To My Downfall – charting higher with guitar-driven pop-punk songs than he ever had as an emcee. Two weeks later, the top spot on the Hot 100 was secured by “Mood,” a guitar-driven emo-rap song by 24kGoldn and Iann Dior, who have since ruled the chart for most of the last two months. But those feel like only the most prominent tipping points of an unlikely alliance between pop-punk and hip-hop — one that has been everywhere in 2020, bubbling up in recent years to finally reach the forefront of popular music.  Once upon a time, hip-hop and punk bubbled out of New York City as parallel movements that intersected often, from Debbie Harry rhyming about Fab Five Fre...
