Andrew Watt on His Breakout Year, Producing Ozzy Osbourne and Miley Cyrus
Andrew Watt has learned to accept change. The Long Island-born, L.A.-based producer has had a monster year, even if his body yearns for its younger days. “I think my body just woke up and said you have to pee now!” Watt tells SPIN. “Before I turned 30, I’d work in the afternoon all through the night. Now, I’m up at 8:30 and laying down tracks by 10.” It’s certainly been a whirlwind year for Watt. At the top, he produced Ozzy Osbourne’s latest solo album, Ordinary Man, which featured a wide array of guests (like Watt’s pal Post Malone, Elton John, Slash and Tom Morello), along with a band that included Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith and Guns N’ Roses’ Duff McKagan. Ozzy Osbourne Says Eddie Van Halen Once Asked Him to Join Van Halen
In a recent episode of his SiriusXM show, Ozzy Speaks, Ozzy Osbourne told a tale about Eddie Van Halen calling him with an offer to join Van Halen. A potential Oz Halen would have been a “shot in the dark,” but the Black Sabbath icon in lieu of Diamond David Lee Roth or Red Rocker Sammy Hagar obviously did not come to pass. Osbourne recounted the tale: “He phoned me up one time and asked me if I wanted to sing in his band — way after Sammy [Hagar had exited the band]. Mastodon, Darkest Hour, Kvelertak, Baroness Members Cover Ozzy Osbourne on Two Minutes to Late Night
Quarantine cover series Two Minutes to Late Night pays homage to Halloween by covering Ozzy Osbourne’s 1982 solo hit, “Over The Mountain.” The ever-shifting metal consortium who performs the true-to-the-original cover is Mastodon’s Brann Dailor, Darkest Hour/Be Well’s Mike Schleibaum, Kvelertak’s Marvin Nygaard, Baroness’ Seb Thomson, and host Gwarsenio Hall. The original of the tune featured late, great guitarist Randy Rhoads. The band tosses in a moment of Black Sabbath’s titular “Black Sabbath” to up the spookiness in the tune, plus, for more Halloween-ness, there’s a background of a costume store, and Dailor, in further homage to the Prince of Darkness, bit the head of a plush bat. In a wide-ranging Rolling Stone interview ahead of tonight’s (Sept. 7) debut of Biography: The Nine Lives of Ozzy Osbourne on A&E, Ozzy Osbourne said he was “done” with Black Sabbath even though guitarist Tony Iommi is up to play with the legendary lineup again. Osbourne did admit, however, that he regrets not doing Sabbath’s 2017 farewell show in Birmingham with founding drummer Bill Ward. “I felt really bad about that. It would have been so nice. Younger fans may be surprised to learn, for example, that in a druggy haze in the 1980s, Ozzy attempted to murder his wife and Jack’s mother, Sharon Osbourne, by strangling her in their bedroom. That kind of domestic abuse would likely end someone’s career today — but at the time, Sharon dealt with it by dropping the charges and sending Ozzy away for a long period in rehab.
