As part of our 35th anniversary, we’re naming the most influential artists of the past 35 years. Today, we’re at #21. From Atlanta, Georgia, here is OutKast. Credit: Tim Mosenfelder/Getty Images The South had something to say long before OutKast brought rap listeners to the corner of Headland and Delowe. Eventually, Andre 3000 and Big Boi made the world pay attention to East Point, Georgia. Political but approachable, smooth yet rugged, intellectual and sensual — they were the platonic ideal of a rap duo and perfect foils. Three Stacks was philosophical and eccentric with pop-inclinations; Big Boi was more grounded, dropping pragmatic game as he was bending corners and rapping circles around everyone. They also worked when trading roles, abiding a shared maxim: “If it ain’t real, ain’t rig...
This month’s edition of the Reissue Section bounces all around the globe: from Athens, Ga. to Wales, from Berlin to Sacramento (and back to Athens again). Seriously, this COVID year continues to yield some of the best archival titles since they first started telling us that CDs were a dead scene. As if… Pylon – Pylon Box (New West Records) / Young Marble Giants – Colossal Youth (Domino) If we’ve learned anything from the recent barrage of TV show revivals, anniversary stories and video game nostalgia, we know the early 80s brought a major cultural sea change — especially on modern rock radio, as punk took on bolder forms against the backdrop of New Wave. Pylon (of Athens, Ga.) and Young Marble Giants (of Cardiff, Wales) were way ahead of their time at that pivotal p...
Source: WENN/Avalon / WENN The A’s Rap community continues to encourage fans and locals alike to make sure their voice is heard with this upcoming election. Big Boi has given back to city essentials workers in a thoughtful way. As spotted on TMZ the still very active OutKast member is putting his money where his mouth if when it comes to our boots to the ground representation in Atlanta. On Saturday, October 24 the “SpottieOttieDopaliscious” rapper partnered with Postmates and World Central Kitchen to serve meals to poll workers. He used the app to send over trays of shrimp tacos and pan-seared chicken. The gesture was well received by the staff as the city has been facing massing lines during the early voting phase. While Daddy Fat Sacks did not take to his social med...
With the 20th-anniversary reissue of Outkast’s Stankonia dropping on Friday (Oct. 30), the duo shared one of the rare tracks that will appear on the record — the remix of “B.O.B. (Bombs Over Baghdad)” by Zack de la Rocha of Rage Against the Machine. Only released to radio, the RATM frontman worked on it in September and October 2000 at Southern Tracks Recording in Atlanta — adding aggressive guitar riffs giving it more grit and edge to already frenetic track. [embedded content] “Zack added an extra layer of grunge to a masterpiece,” Big Boi told Rolling Stone. Meanwhile, Andre 3000 said, “I’m a fan of the Rage sound so it was an honor to have them involved in a remix.” The bundle will also include Ms. Jackson” and “So Fresh, So Clean” in a cappella versions of the songs along with assorted...
The year 2000 looms large in pop culture history: the Y2k non-scare, the Seinfeld “Newmannium” episode, the “In the Year 2000″ sketch from Conan O’Brien’s original late-night show, the Hulu series PEN15. And just like, say, the grunge-defined 1991, the year immediately conjures specific sounds: gleaming teen-pop, earnest radio rock, the Neptunes and Timbaland. There’s never a bad time to revisit this music. But in the middle of a pandemic, with America on the verge of collapse, it feels extra comforting — a blast of nostalgia for a time when you could safely exit your home, visit your local mall’s Sam Goody and buy Mystikal’s “Shake Ya Ass” CD single. For this list, our only criteria was that the songs appear on albums or soundtracks released in 2000. Here we go. 50. Papa Roach, “Last Reso...
Source: Tommaso Boddi / Getty Even though he is very removed from the Hip-Hop world André 3000 is still very much in high demand. He was seen out on the town and the internet was here for it. As spotted on HipHopDX there was a very rare sighting of the eclectic MC that gave joy to OutKast fans far and wide. Last week Staple Design founder Jeff Staple met up with 3 Stacks and shared the experience with the world. On a clip that has gone viral on social media Benjamin is seen walking up to Staple wearing a long sleeve real tree camouflage shirt, a beaded necklace, drawstring pants and a pair of high top sneakers. It is obvious he is one with the land as he letting his grooming go to the wind with a very natural approach to his hair and beard. Nevertheless we can feel the positive vibes ...
