<span class="localtime" data-ltformat="F j, Y | g:ia" data-lttime="2021-04-26T03:43:28+00:00“>April 25, 2021 | 11:43pm ET In the biggest upset of the night, Chadwick Boseman was robbed of the Best Actor Oscar at the 2021 Academy Awards in favor of Anthony Hopkins. Entering Sunday’s award’s night, Boseman was the easy frontrunner for the Best Actor category. His role as blues trumpeter Levee Green in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom had already earned him trophies at the Golden Globes (where he became only the second posthumous acting winner, following Peter Finch), the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards, the Black Film Critics Circle, the Black Reel Awards, the NAACP Image Awards, and more. But when the final award of the night wa...

Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross and Jon Batiste Win Best Original Score Oscar for Soul

Nearly two months after taking home the Best Original Score Golden Globe for their work on Soul, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, along with The Late Show musical director Jon Batiste earned themselves an Oscar in the same category for Mank. They beat out James Newton Howard (News Of The World), Terence Blanchard (Da 5 Bloods), Emile Mosseri (Minari), and themselves for their work on Soul. This marks the duo’s second Oscar. They previously won the Best Original Score award for 2011’s The Social Network. Aside from their two Oscars, Reznor and Ross’s work has also won them two Golden Globes and an Emmy. Earlier this year, the trio won a Golden Globe for their work on Soul as well. Reznor and Ross took home an Emmy last year for their work on H...

Maria Bakalova Nominated for Best Supporting Actress Oscar for Borat Subsequent Moviefilm

Maria Bakalova, who stole scenes from Sacha Baron Cohen and exposed Rudy Giuliani in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, has been nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress at the 2021 Academy Awards. Bakalova’s satirical performance as Tutar Sagdiyev befuddled real-life shop workers, healthcare professionals, and the lovable babysitter Janise Jones. But even among people who never saw the movie, she’s known for enduring several minutes alone in a hotel room with Former President Trump’s personal lawyer. Giuliani was filmed telling Bakalova to “come here,” lying down on the bed, and reaching into his pants, before Cohen’s Borat character burst into the room. Giuliani later claimed he was only attempting to tuck in his shirt. The clip dominated the news cycle for several days, even as the c...

Riz Ahmed and Steven Yeun Earn Historic Best Actor Nominations at Academy Awards

Two of the best film performances of 2020 were Riz Ahmed in Sound of Metal and Steven Yeun in Minari, and both actors were rightfully nominated for Best Actor at the upcoming Academy Awards because of such. However, in addition to the general excitement of Ahmed and Yeun getting those well-deserved nods, this also means they just made history as the first Muslim actor and first Asian American actor, respectively, to be nominated in the category. In Sound of Metal, Ahmed plays a heavy metal drummer named Ruben who’s learning to live with the loss of hearing, particularly in regards to his career as a musician and his love life — a performance that required him to study with an ASL coach for nearly a year. It’s an intimate and deeply moving character study, especially compared to the bi...

A pair of music films — Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and The United States vs. Billie Holiday — received Best Actress in a Leading Role nods for their stars, Viola Davis and Andra Day, respectively. Borat’s “Wuhan Flu” on Shortlist for Best Original Song Oscar

Oscar’s comin’. The Academy has unveiled shortlists for nine categories at the upcoming 2021 Oscars, including Best Original Song. Already, there’s plenty of competition among those listed, including from — believe it or not — Kazakhstan’s most trusted journalist. Yes, “Wuhan Flu” from Amazon’s Borat Subsequent Moviefilm: Delivery of Prodigious Bribe to American Regime for Make Benefit Once Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan is one of the 15 original songs that made the shortlist. The ridiculous singalong joins a tough assembly that includes heavy hitters like Janelle Monáe (“Turntables” from All In: The Fight for Democracy), Mary J. Blige (“See What You’ve Done” from Belly of the Beast), H.E.R. (“Fight For You” from Judas and the Black Messiah), and Leslie Odom, Jr. (“Speak Now” from One Night...
