Ronnie Hawkins, the rockabilly musician who would serve as a mentor to The Band, has died at the age of 87. Hawkins’ wife Wanda confirmed the news to the CBC. “He went peacefully and he looked as handsome as ever,” she said. Born in Huntsville, Arkansas on January 10, 1935, Hawkins started playing music in local bars when he was 18. He’d go on to form The Hawks, which would eventually include fellow Arkansas musician Levon Helm. On the recommendation of Conway Twitty, Hawkins would relocate to Hamilton, Ontario at the beginning of the 1960s. Depeche Mode co-founder and keyboardist Andy Fletcher has died at the age of 60, according to a post on the legendary U.K. band’s Twitter account. No cause of death has been revealed. “Fletch had a true heart of gold and was always there when you needed support, a lively conversation, a good laugh or a cold pint,” they wrote. “Our hearts are with his family.” The roots of Depeche Mode date back to the late 1970s, when Fletcher and friend Vince Clarke played in a band called No Romance In China.
