On the heels of this February’s Single Album, long-running punk outfit NOFX will release the appropriately named Double Album on Dec. 2 through Fat Wreck Chords. The 10-song effort was produced by Descendents leader Bill Stevenson and Jason Livermore, and is led by the single “Darby Crashing Your Party.” [embedded content][embedded content] “I wanted to do a double album cuz there are no good ones out there,” NOFX’s Fat Mike says, presumably with tongue planted firmly in cheek. “Pink Floyd’s The Wall is about it. Quadrophenia is OK, I guess, if you’re a Who fan. Definitely not [The Beatles’] White Album. I don’t think anybody else has made good double albums. Certainly not Husker Du, Minutemen, or Smashing Pumpkins. “I really like Single Album a lot, but the songs on Double Album aren’t qu...
According to “Fat Mike” Burkett, NOFX is calling it quits next year after a 40-year run as a band. Rolling Stone reports that the frontman casually broke the news in an Instagram comment to a fan asking when the band planned to tour in Canada on Thursday. “Actually, we love Canada, it’s just that next year will be our last year. We will be announcing our final shows soon. It’s been an amazing run….,” he wrote, while adding in a separate comment, “Los Angeles will be the last place we play. It’s where we started, it’s where we’ll end.” As of press time, the band itself has made no official confirmation of any pending split. In a reply to an Instagram comment (of all things) on a post that had absolutely nothing to do with the band, NOFX singer and bassist “Fat Mike” Burkett announced that 2023 “will be the [the] last year” for the iconic punks. Someone familiar with the situation confirmed the news to SPIN. When asked why the band doesn’t come to Canada more often, the Fat Wreck Chords boss said “Actually, We love Canada, it’s just that next year will be our last year. We will be announcing our final shows soon. It’s been an amazing run….” He then confirmed the location of the band’s final show in a reply to a different comment. “Los Angeles will be the last place we play. It’s where we started, it’s where we’ll end.” NOFX’s final year will also mark the band’s 40th anniversary, and the announcement come...
When it comes to veteran punk rockers with non-musical gigs they’re passionate about, Erik “Smelly” Sandin has a resume longer than most. From motocross to boxing, the NOFX drummer has often found secondary careers to keep him busy when he isn’t on tour. But when COVID-19 forced the band into a lengthy break for the first time in nearly 40 years, Sandin turned another one of his hobbies into another new business. Sandin had been shaping surfboards out of his Long Beach, California garage for family and friends for years, but he decided to make it into a full-time job (when not touring) during the pandemic. Appropriately named Pickle Stix, Sandin’s custom-shaped surfboards are made to order and designed for each individual customer. SPIN spoke with the NOFX drummer and entrepreneur about hi...
NOFX singer Fat Mike is learning that words matter, as the band dropped out of this year’s Las Vegas’ Punk Rock Bowling festival due to fallout from an offensive quip he made onstage in 2018 that referenced the 2017 Vegas shooting at the Route 91 Harvest festival. Joking around with guitarist Eric Martin during the show, Fat Mike said of the victims, “At least they were country fans.” The Descendents will replace NOFX as headliners. The band apologized within a few days, saying, “What we said in Vegas was shitty and insensitive and we are all embarrassed by our remarks. So we decided we will all get together to discuss and write an in depth, sincere, and honest apology because that’s what the people we offended and hurt deserve.” Later, in 2019, they released a song called “Fish ...
Fat Mike of NOFX has never been shy about voicing his opinions and speaking the truth about his reality, but he’s taken his honesty to a new level with “Fuck Euphemism,” the brand new single off of the upcoming Single Album. The song itself (and accompanying animated music video) is full of the thoughtful wordplay that’s made them one of the dominating forces in punk for over 30 years now, but the subject matter is a full-frontal look at Mike’s struggle of where he fits in with the current gender identity standards echoing throughout society. Of course, that makes sense for the second single off of their latest work, as Single Album (which was apparently supposed to be a double album before getting cut down) is likely the darkest and most personal material the band has ever put out. SPIN s...
California punk progenitors NOFX shared a video for their song “‘Linewleum,” a clip featuring M Shadows of Avenged Sevenfold. It’s the first single released from Single Album, which is due out Feb. 26 on Fat Wreck Chords. Single Album is the band’s 14th full-length LP and contains 12 new tracks. It was recorded at Motor Studios in San Francisco with Bill Stevenson and Jason Livermore (Rise Against, Alkaline Trio, Teenage Bottlerocket). “A song about not playing a song that’s not a hit song with a video about other bands covering the song! This is why I love punk rock writing punk songs. Rules out the door!” Fat Mike said of “Linewleum.” “I have no idea why “Linoleum” is THE NOFX song that is covered by so many bands while other NOFX songs get hardly any attention,” Burkett c...
