New PC App Turns Your Nintendo Console Into an 8-Bit Synthesizer

An innovative app developer recently managed to unlock some hidden value in the Nintendo Entertainment System, a console discontinued decades ago.  For those who’ve managed to hold onto their consoles, or buy a reissued version, Avicr has a new app that empowers players to turn their classic systems into a functioning synthesizer. Titled SynthNes, the app effectively allows users to control the system’s five dedicated audio channels NES’s with a MIDI instrument of your choosing. The reason why this works on the old-school Nintendo specifically is because the NES was part of an era in videogame history where consoles were sold containing dedicated sound chips. In the 1980s, CPU and storage technology was in its most primitive form, and the way music was produced in vi...

You can pre-order R64, which is set for a March 25th, 2022 release date, on Remute’s Bandc...

The Super Nintendo Entertainment System first arrived in the United States on August 23, 1991, in a limited release before getting an official nationwide release date of September 9, 1991. The SNES was Nintendo’s answer to Sega’s 16-bit console, the Sega Genesis. The SNES would sell 23.35 million consoles in the United States and 49 million worldwide thanks to games like Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country, and more. Thousands of games lived on the console, but we...

Nintendo Warns Against Co-Streaming E3 Showcase

While Microsoft encouraged co-streaming this year’s massive Twitch-hosted E3 showcase, Nintendo took a different approach in warning streamers against it.  E3’s 2021 showcase took place mostly online, in light of concerns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. Nintendo opted out of co-streaming the event from the official Twitch platform, and warned that co-streamers may receive DMCA copyright strikes for streaming E3 due to licensing issues with the music that was used in this year’s festivities. Microsoft actually obtained retransmission rights for all of the music that was used in this year’s streamed event, though those rights will expire after one year. Should co-streamers not delete their VOD (video on demand) before that year-long period is up, they may rece...

The slogan “Around The World” is also seen on the flyer, no doubt a head nod to the duo’s groundbreaking 90s hit by the same name.   Another Splatoon 3 ad in the magazine depicts a paint streak trailing off far into the distance amid a barren desert l...
